Have to figure that it alters the focus of the scouts at least somewhat, whether that's smaller schools or just focusing on later round projected players all year
That is important. The last few yrs they know to focus heavily on guys projected in the 100-200ish range. Sure they still had some picks between 50-100, but 70% of their picks come after pick 100 generally.

So makes sense to really focus on small school types or first yr starters that can get overlooked. And if they attack their scouting with that emphasis a yr or even two ahead of time, it will and has paid dividends.

He's basically a better Malcolm Brown, right?
More burst through the hole and vision. But does lower the shoulder for the extra yard or two like Brown. Also lacks the big time jukes and top end high speed similar to Malcolm Brown. Also a good pass protecting back like Brown.

Eh, I don't think I'd use that comparison. Brown was serviceable or better in basically every area, but he was a plodder who got what was blocked and not much more. I'd say as a runner, Michel is more similar to Mark Ingram in terms of skillset. But Ingram has much better hands in the passing game. Michel has a lot more burst than Brown and is more capable of shedding tacklers.

I'm a pretty big fan of the trade. It makes sense and I'm a die-hard Darrell Henderson supporter but the fact is he's one injury away from having two backups take over for him that have never taken an NFL regular season snap. Sony Michel still has plenty left in the tank but if you are over on Twitter people are acting as if he's 33 years old and has Gurley's knees. He can still create yards, he can still run through tackles and is only 26. I gave my full thoughts on the trade here in this video, let me know your thoughts.

Five things to know about new Rams RB Sony Michel

The Rams on Wednesday acquired running back Sony Michel from the New England Patriots in exchange for an undisclosed 2022 draft pick and undisclosed 2023 draft pick.

Here are five things fans should know about him:

1) Familiar with Los Angeles

Nearly fourth months before getting drafted 31st overall by the Patriots in 2018, Michel went off for 222 all-purpose yards and four total touchdowns (three rushing, one receiving) to help lead Georgia to a 54-48 double-overtime win over Oklahoma in the Rose Bowl and advance to the College Football Playoff title game.

The third rushing score was the game-winner in the second overtime period which sent the Bulldogs to the national championship.

2) A promising fit in the Rams' offense

Michel averaged 4.2 yards after contact per attempt on outsize zone and man runs last year, most in the NFL according to PFF's Nathan Jahnke. The Rams ran those types of runs on 69 percent of their run plays last year.

3) Capable target in the passing game

Michel has shown he can be effective as both a runner and a receiver.

In last week's preseason game against the Eagles, he caught all four of his targets for 37 yards, including a long of 19. Last year, had seven receptions for 114 yards, good for 16.3 yards per reception.

4) Another Bulldog-turned-Ram

When Michel arrives in L.A., he'll be greeted by familiar faces in former Georgia strength and conditioning staff member Justin Lovett, outside linebacker Leonard Floyd, defensive back J.R. Reed, quarterback Matthew Stafford, running back and running backs coach Thomas Brown and center Nick Jones. Brown coached Michel at Georgia in 2015.

Yeah That's what I meant. A tough between the tackle runner who can pick up the dirty yards, but has a little more explosion. Brown was a lazy comparison lol Ingram was a much better one

Excellent trade! Michel was a great player at Georgia, and if he's anywhere near as good with us, we just got ourselves a starter!

We do like them Dawgs! If J.R. Reed makes the team (he's had a solid preseason), we'll have four Georgia players: Stafford, Floyd, Michel and Reed!

One thing that I like to hear in the above is the recognition by Snead that they wanted some downhill run ability in that group. I am way less concerned with breakaway ability/speed than I am basic oomph. Oomph is what we needed.

I'd also like to hear McVay or Brown speak on the differences Michel is facing with the scheme/nomenclature and how long they project it will take to get him ready to where he's playing fast and not thinking. Midseason? Quarter pole maybe?

Anyway. Still on cloud 9 with this trade man. Hope he's the same kind of piece for us that CJ was. This offense is far more potent when it has a power option, whether or not McVay realizes it. (y)

As others have pointed out, Michel is very similar in many ways to Akers.. like you say, not the breakaway speed, but a guy who can definitely gash defenses for 20+ regularly, in addition to putting out quality runs consistently.
I'm very happy they made this happen.
Good point on the Ramp up time (couldn't resist), but I think he ends up being the leading carrier on the Rams by a good margin no matter what.

Seems to me the Rams have figured out that draft picks are overvalued if you have a FO and coaching staff that can make the most of players drafted outside the first round.
I think it's smart as hell. They are trading picks for known commodities versus crossing their fingers and hoping it works out.
