We also drafted Desjuan Johnson, number 6 on that list. Does Snead have a PFF subscription?

We definitely drafted some athletes that analytics like in Turner and Johnson (among others, most likely; I don't have PFF). We also drafted a few freakish athletes (Hampton, Hodges-Tomlinson, who both made Feldman's Freak list, although Zach Evans, Young, Mathis, and Taylor II are also really athletic.)

Is there a higher hit rate with players like that? I feel like at this point, we'd have enough data to be able to make incredibly informed decisions about players. Not guarantees, but understanding the success percentages for players with a certain athletic profile, size, stats, and school or conference combo. Or if it really is a random walk and size/athleticism don't change success outcomes, stop paying attention to them.

Back in his day that was pretty big.
Yeah, you look at old football cards from the 70's.. DT's were typically 250lbs. DEs like Alan Page & Jack Youngblood were 240 lbs. LBs 210-220 lbs.

On offense, OG's were 250lbs, C's 240, OTs 260 lbs.

And that was the 70's, not the 60's when Jones was in his prime.

I think there's something to it, I remember Greg Gaines and David Edwards to name a few being profootballfocus darlings despite being relative afterthoughts and I thought both well outplayed their draft positions. Cooper Kupp and Aaron Donald were on top of all the analytics charts of course, but those were both more obvious dominant college players.

I'm sure there's more if someone can chime in here?

Greg Gaines won the Pac 12 Defensive Linemen of The Year award his last yr. So he was a known quantity and productive player.

I really like our first pick. I like our second pick too. I do think Turner mighta been a bit of a reach. But each team has their own rating system and knows who fits their scheme better. So I'll have to defer to Snead and McVay knowing more about this guy than I do.
They really seemed to focus on guys with a chip on their shoulders, or who had to fight to get where they are.

It remains to be seen if these players work out. I do like emphasizing character. However I think that can also be misleading in some cases. Most of the players drafted, care about football. It’s there lives. Snead looked hard for special cases. It may be easier just to weed out the bad ones.

Yet Taylor Rapp was drafted ahead of him & The Rams number 1 pick in 2019.
The thing about both players were they were undersized. In Greg Gaines case standing right next to him in uniform(helmet off),he was smallish compared to say Brockers in height. He had limits in his range of attack. He was like a little Rhineno - .
See him in the corral. He hit that SLED like no other. Talk about compact.
Greg Gaines put in The Hard WWork to get better. He always paid attention to details & was always part of that D’Line Group.
— The Guy who was Super Stoked was Eric Henderson with this pick of Turner. He like what he brings in his PERSON!! That is wear it becomes FUN!! Having The Trust in a Coach & you in him.
AD99 swears in Eric Henderson. He is a Players Coach first. He has control of The D-Line group.I can go on,but The Brown Bro’s are going into there THIRD Season.Don’t know there measurables.

I wouldn't compare Turner to AD at all because that's doing AD a disservice. I'd cautiously compare him to Geno Atkins as a ceiling he might achieve. He isn't in that realm yet but I could see him being that kind of impact player if he keeps improving/building strength over the next several seasons.

I've seen that description on Kobie about heavy hands. Not sure what that means. Maybe he's strong for his size? Whatever the case it looks like we got ourselves a keeper for the next 4 years. With Byron Young on the outside we have a nice inside out duo. And they should only get better with a full season under their belts. Young should be a steady double digit sack guy.

Based on his position I'd say he probably produces a lot of force when coming into contact with an offensive lineman.

Watching Turner against the Cards was very interesting. The replay of one of his sacks showed him playing as a DT replacing Donald. But his explosiveness off the snap and hand play was strictly Aaron Donald like. He split that double team and it made my day as I turned to Maggie and said "That's all AD's influence". The Rams have their follow-up DT when Donald decides to hang his cleats up. Turner may never be the great DT that Donald is, but he's showing he's going to be pretty damn good.
