Hard to be upset about the refs when you give up 3rd and 22 and 3rd and 9 when getting off the field likely seals the victory. And when you play as awful as the Rams did in the 1st half. The refs also gave us an INT that was highly questionable and a momentum changer. The Rams have themselves to blame for the loss, first and foremost.
The bogus OPI call still stings, notwithstanding the above. Although the "blame" for this L fairly rests with the Rams, the OPI call decided the game, in that if the refs did not throw that flag, the game would have ended with a turnover on downs. With the questionable INT call today (and the non-call we benefited from vs. the Saints a few years ago), there was still plenty of football left to be played. Who is to say the Saints don't fumble or miss the field goal? Here, the Rams just had to take a knee. I don't consider the OPI call against the Cowboys in week 1, which involved clear arm extension by a WR to get open, to even be in the same league as today's ref error or the Saints non-call.
I love Staley's half-time adjustments on defence. We were really missing that with Wade. But if the defence keeps starting so poorly... it's all for nothing. He needs to be better in the first half. Both in terms of defensive schemes and play calls, but also in having his players ready to go.
Aaron Donald is a machine. The others on the d-line... not so much. We are struggling to pass rush. If we can make they playoffs, hopefully we have Lewis and Robinson available. Those two could make a huge difference. Of course, by that time of the year, we might have currently healthy players no longer available. Fingers crossed we stay healthy. NFL football is in large part a war of attrition...
The secondary needs to pick up its socks. It is not even close to good enough right now, and that includes Jalen Ramsey. The entire first half, when the Buffalo WRs caught the ball, no Rams player was even close to being in the vicinity. It's mind boggling how that can happen for an entire half of NFL football.
I love Rapp against the run, but hate him in coverage. I was forgiving last year as he was a rookie, e.g. his gaff against San Fran late in the year to cost us the game. But he does not seem to be learning. Unfortunately for Rapp's bid to win his starting job back, pass coverage is a large part of a safety's job. I do expect Fuller will retain the starting job, which is a good thing, because a safety that cannot cover is not starting material to begin with.
Henderson looks great. The red-zone offence also is improved. Amazing how having a run game again instantly makes those things better, and launches this offense back to being among the best in the NFL. The o-line has vastly improved, which is the key to it all. Let's hope they can keep that up! There are still some times the o-line struggles, but overall, I am very pleased with this unit. It is vastly exceeding expectations.
McVay's timeout usage is atrocious and is going to cost us games. How is it that we seem to burn one every 1st quarter? And never have more than 1 available late in the game if we to launch a comeback and stop the clock? It's actually a big issue, and I like McVay.
No issues with a rookie kicker missing a FG from 50 yards+ out, against the wind, on the road. The issue is how badly Sloman missed, combined with his previous misses and how low his kicks often are. He does not inspire confidence. Let's cross our fingers and hope he grows with experience. Right now, I don't think he's the answer.
Buffalo is a good team. Allen is much improved. No shame losing to them. As much as I blame the Rams for their poor start, you have to credit the Bills for it too. Their defence was suffocating at times, although we generally did manage to move the ball well.
Goff appears to be bouncing back to form. I think the problem really was the league-worst offensive line play last year.
