Why would Carolina sell him on the cheap, or give up on him at all? His contract is peanuts, non guaranteed as well. Cost them a 3rd rounder last year and surely would be worth having on their bench if the rookie is struggling
Not saying they would give up on him. Not saying it's likely. But teams do stupid shit sometimes. So I'd call them and try to shake him loose while they're riding the high of trading up to that first pick.

There are some others that would apply to as well. The Texans for example will probably draft a QB and they have Mills as a holdover. I don't know that they would move him. I don't know that they appreciate the things he has done well in his limited time as a starter. But I'd call them too and try to shake him loose. He's on that list for me.

Drew Lock would be my choice (since Mayfield will go for a starting job)...but I'm admittedly biased.

My bad, the way I read your post I thought Carolina had waived him or openly put him on market. I agree on both him and Mills, if either shook free

I would hope that McVay would turn his attention to drafting a couple of QB's that have the skills he prefers on the 3rd day of the draft. Getting them time to develop with a QB like #9 would be ideal.

If I was planning this up for the long term, I want #9 here till the end of his contract. Plan the best way to keep #9 here & healthy till the end of 2026.

#1 objective- develop a run-first offense from this point on into the future. We know very well the ultra-high cost of NFL team assets for QB's like #9 caliber.

Rams best veteran OL'er is RT Havenstein. He has all pro skills in the run game, he is under contract for the next 3 seasons. LT Alaric Jackson has @ this time skills in run blocking. Both starting OT's are better-run blockers than pass blockers together. Top OT reserve AJ Arcuri has good run-blocking skills too. Trade Noteboom ASAP to teams in big need of a pass blocking LT.

The 3 signed very inexperienced OG's Logan Bruss/ Tremayne Anchrum & Zac Thomas at this time are not up to NFL level in pass protection & better off working in the run blocking than pass blocking. OC Brian Allen's better @ Run blocking than pass protection.

Drafting 2 young QB's to groom is a low-cost smart move. If #9 gets nicked up or injured the youngsters get some experience with snaps. Taking the pressure off #9 and having to take hits when he was injured is crucial to prolong his career.

If we can't get one in the draft I'd be fine with Mike White and Lafleur knows him obviously. Always looked competent when he started, though in comparison to Wilson that isn't saying much...

Frankly, I hope it'll be Baker. I think a whole off-season with McVay and Stafford would set him up for GREAT success with us after Stafford retires.

I think that if there was any possibility that Stafford only had 1 season left, they'd cut bait right now.
His contract is about to trigger an additional 57 million in guaranteed money, including his entire 2024 salary and option bonus that will pay him 38 million next year.

Looked like on OTC that no matter what, we're screwed with his number.

Not screwed at all.
Having 2021 version of Matt Stafford for the next couple seasons is hardly being screwed.
And if the Rams didnt believe that 100%, he'd be cut. PERIOD

If he's 2021 version, not at all. I'm a massive Stafford fan. He's already my favorite Rams QB of all time.

I'm referring to IF he's not himself anymore, and IF, he's not going to be himself again. He's a shell and what we saw towards the end of his '22 season.. were screwed with his cap number.

Not to mention I have zero faith our OL will protect him in '23 which is why we NEED to invest in a top backup.

Not sure anybody the FAs are either worth the money they want or lower end worth the roster spot.

I don’t expect them to spend draft capital on a developmental guy before the 5th round and I think Bennett might be worth a look later.

I like Davis Mills but he's not a good fit for McVay's scheme. Too many of his deep balls float, i.e. he doesn't have the arm strength to drive it deep with touch and accuracy. Mills would be a dink and dunk offense QB in the NFL.

Honestly I am worried about him. I am worried whether he can meet that contract obligation. The guy has taken a beating over his career and has his ring now.

So behind the scenes I am sure this has been discussed ad nauseum at Rams Park. Glad they decided he is going to stick around too. Love the guy. But yeah I am worried so the backup decision feels more important than it has.

this is a bit of circular logic.
Spending significant cap space on what the top backup will cost will prevent the Rams from investing in the o-line

Not if we look at this rebuild as a two year process, not one.
