I agree Mojo but at this point we cant do much with his contract..and who's going to trade for him? He's on pace to have a worse year than last year in most categories and we actually have a running game and good oline this year. Truth is he hasnt been the same since 2018. All we can hope for is for him to play better for the next few seasons. We can opt out of his contract after 2022 and take only a $8M cap hit instead of $32M. By then we will have a 1st round pick and keep trying to find a guy that can go win a super bowl.
When Goff is playing well it's kind of a tease because his ball is so great, and sometimes hes pinpoint accurate and gets hot. He looks like a complete stud. But after 5 years and still not improving in major areas I seriously wonder how much McVay has maximized his talent. All the playaction, all the misdirection, it's all trying to simplify reads and give him an advantage in the passing game. Which good coaching should...but when those things dont work, what are we left with at QB? We have a top 5 play designer and play caller in the NFL. How good would Goff look in another system?
I hated Vilma today just like everyone else, but he is an ex-pro bowl LB and one thing he said is true regarding why we roll Goff out. 1) He is good throwing on the run so we take advantage of that skill set, 2) we move the pocket and it helps him avoid pressure, which is when he plays his worst, 3) it narrows his reads to a half of field. And to me this is the most telling regarding his development in year 5. The flood concepts we run are 3 layer throws to one side or the other, and that is the staple of our playaction boot throws. When Goff has to go shotgun, sit in the pocket, and read a 4-5 person progression, while navigating the pocket, while avoiding pressure, trying to decipher a disguised look, he is not a good QB. His accuracy goes to shit a lot. Of course he makes the occasional big play in these situations, he made a big 3rd down throw to Woods today over the middle, but a vast majority are off target or lead to bad plays. I think McVay has realized this and this is why our offense is built the way it is.
