What does this mean going forward?

Does Stafford's extension come close in value to Deshaun Watson's current contract with the Browns?

Am I missing some money details?

Did Stafford and his agent agree take a discount?

Can any of you salary cap experts tell me the difference of Watson's contract numbers compared to Stafford's?

What is the real breakdown?

He took less than Rodgers and Watson. He gave the Rams a deal.

Agreed with others that said Stafford took a bit less. The deal is fair value, but after seeing Rodgers and Watson sign their contracts, you have to think that Matt could have pushed for more and received it. It seems he is making a rational choice, to take a bit less in hopes it will help him win more Super Bowls. :thumbsup1:
$43m per year (for first three years) is not exactly a major discount imo. Coming with a big guarantee it's probably somewhere around market value for a top tier QB. What I would say is that Stafford wasn't trying to prove anything and wasn't concerned about his ego-- same approach he takes to the game.

Thus no attempt to hold up the Rams for Rodgers money at $50m per year or a Watson type outlier guarantee. But AR is the current repeat MVP and Stafford doesn't need a guarantee that might run longer than he actually plays. (If he plays longer he's probably better off renegotiating another deal later anyway. The price will only go up).

What might actually help the Rams in the here and now is how the contract is structured, which apparently is expected to free up needed cap space for this year. Hopefully that's the case.

Anyway great to see the deal get done. Now on to AD and an edge rusher.

Will Stafford’s extension (Thank You Matt Stafford!!!) help with the Rams signing of Aaron Donald, OBJ and Robert Woods??? Is there any chance the Rams will even want to keep both OBJ and Woods (I hope so!!)??

Details breakdown we won't know for a few days likely.

Watson signed a 5 year fully guaranteed $230 million deal. The only thing we know about it is his base pay next year is a bit over $1 million. They did this in an attempt to protect him against a suspension, you lose game checks for suspensions so it's a minimal loss that way.

Stafford signed a 4 year extension of $129 million with added with the current year he has for the Rams they're calling it a 4 year $160 million deal with $135 million guaranteed. Spotrac shows his base pay for 2022 as $12.5 million with a roster bonus of $10 million and a $500k workout bonus. They show nothing else so I'm not certain those numbers are actual yet.

This looks very much like he left money on the table. Hope AD does the same.

Stafford's extension shouldn't have any bearing on the AD contract. If anything, both of those contracts will make 2022 cheaper than last year.

Do we want to keep OBJ and Woods? Thus far, yes. We've heard nothing (fingers crossed) about anyone wowing the Rams with an offer for Woods and they've already stated that they want to bring OBJ back.

Woods is already signed and OBJ being recently injured and not likely back before December (I think those saying late Oct or early Nov are being overly optimistic and that's not how McVay or Reggie Scott clear players or work them in) means that short of a deal between now and the deadline tomorrow, I would expect deals for both of them to come back.

To be clear, AD's contract shouldn't be an issue and the Stafford contract wasn't in the way. Robert Woods is signed and short of a deal, he's gonna be back. OBJ is someone we want to resign. I think they're waiting on the big chips to fall before making any deals with OBJ as there's no rush. If someone wants to try and sign him away to a big dollar multiyear deal, that's up to OBJ. I know that he wants to come back and he's never been happier as a pro than he was this year in LA.

If he did take a discount he is smart because the Rams will use that to give him a better team.

Oh, I'm gonna say it; With the game on the line in the 4th quarter, I would rather have matt out there, and the numbers confirm the eye test. He has more playoff/superbowl wins over the last season than rodgers has in the last 3 years, despite being the number 1 seed twice. Don't even get me started on come from behind wins. Aaron is more concerned with NOT throwing a pick.

I think the $129m for three years (2022,2023,2024) is what the contract really is. Just as Rodgers has two voidable years at the end, the last two years of this extension (2025, 2026) are low salaries. So, they would redo and pay him more then anyways and should not ‘count’.

So, basically $43m per year compared to $50m for Rodgers. So, it’s fair value contract imo.

You guys aren't factoring in the 5th year. The contract is essentially a 4 year extension on his current contract. So essentially it's a 5 year deal. I'm sure they lowered his cap number this year by spreading the money over the other 4 years. If you take the gross and divide it by 5 it comes out to $36.6M average per year for an elite QB!

I can't believe we live in an age where $43M per is taking a team discount. So crazy.

But congrats to 9 and well deserved. Now go win us some more! :trophy:
Exactly what I meant by people who argue athletes don't make way too much. Not saying he shouldn't get it if he can but that this reality is pretty crazy. Congrats to Stafford and I agree with you, bring us another chip please lol

Could he have put the fire to the Rams FO and squeezed them for a bit more - sure of course because QBs have the power these days. Especially one who just won the SB.

But come on, it’s not like he took way less here. He simply didn’t screw the Rams. But the dude got PAID…let’s pull back slightly on the ball washing.
Sorry I'm ball washing.....kinda hard to get in elevators without getting assaulted if you don't hahaha

It’ll seem like an even bigger discount when the cap goes up again

Roman Gabriel has always been my all-time favorite Rams QB ever since I watched my first Rams Game (Rams vs Colts/GABRIEL vs UNITAS!!) many years ago!! While, That might never change I have a feeling it very well could change if Stafford is the Rams QB for the next 4-5 years!!! Today (Rams extending Stafford!!) is a GREAT DAY for the Rams!!!
