But if the guy running that over the top route doesn't scare defenses and can't perform that role does it matter? Again that's the main question, which WR is suddenly going to transform this offense or himself.
Yeah we do have talent issues at WR. We lack that deep threat no doubt.

But of late there has been some effort to get Van going. He does represent young legs and enough speed to be a threat.

Anyway. Just pointing out that sometimes the unsung guy can come in and play balls out. Hopefully that is how this goes down. I just hope they stick to the run balance as Wolford is limited a bit in his arm strength. A complementary run game will help him a ton.

Again that's great and I agree he's not the best when things go to shit but aside from Kupp and Woods who aren't deep threat guys who is going to change the coverage with speed and big play ability? That's what we're missing and needs to be drafted or signed in free agency.
We're on the same page as far as needing a deep threat guy, but when a QB can get out of the pocket as a running threat, your receivers(deep threat or not) can often break coverage in those situations and that can create big plays downfield.

I picked Wolf, but put Ferragamo on that list and you got me, even in his 60's , lemme call Dennard and Drew Hill and we'll have some long balls, cause will always throw a couple bombs a game. He was always a gunslinger.

Most of McVay's route combinations include a mid to deep route. There's situations where there isn't, but generally over a game the shots are there to be taken. This is more of a QB thing and how he feels wrt his protections than it is a coach and scheming thing.

yeah don't think you have to have a 4.3 guy to go deep gerry rice ran a 4.7 40 and could get deep. isaac bruce ran a 4.48 and woods is not far behind at 4.51 not much difference. jefferson was radared the fastest wr at the senior bowl. it might be the ol that keeps us from going deep or the play calling or maybe goff has lost his confidence or maybe we do need that 4.3 guy. there are so many witch came first the chicken or the egg thing going on here. i think we are just going to let things play out and see if the egg hatches or the chicken lays first.

Actually, most of McVay's route combos do NOT include a mid-deep route this year and that's a huge part of the problem.

The offense was less efficient, but overall MUCH more productive and I think McVay has learned that when he tries to run this offense too efficiently, he removes some of the wiggle room you need with changing personnel and opponents.

There are many plays where NOTHING is happening further away than 10 yards, let alone 20. Defenses have focused on that, sat on the short routes or just played a short zone and put the DL in full rush mode.

Maybe switching to Wolford due to Goff's injury will be enough to get McVay to shake loose a bit.

Let’s hope Murray’s leg injury limits his mobility. Then Wolford would be the better running QB and he would only need to match Murray’s pass play which was mostly held in check by the Rams defense in the first game.

There's more to getting deep than just straight line speed, (Hello Tavon Austin) especially in the Jerry Rice/John Taylor era.
Have to be able to get off the line and have those fast twitch fibers that allows some cats to accelerate thru a cut
Jefferson may be that guy, but he seems a little timid in the physical contact area. At least for the time being.
