Mark Barron who Wade Phillips really likes. He has said from day one there are not to many LBers that have his skill set.
If you rewatch game tape you can see a lot of miss opened tackles by Alex Ogletree.
My boss is a former European league coach and knows Wade. He’s not surprised at all that Wade really likes Barron. He says Barron is one of those rare players that most coaches love to have on a team.

It’s Jints compensatory 4th round pick #135. Not the second pick of round. o_O
I have to admit that I also thought you couldn’t trade comp picks but I want to read a first hand as to which of the giants 4th rounders we get.

Obviously this regime has a plan. Let’s all hope it works out.

This year's offseason plan looks to have cap space open for Donald, Gurley, and Goff long-term. Accepting the loss of Ogletree now that we got rid of the contract considering his glaring issues with run defense; from a sabermetrics standpoint, looks like a solid deal for us with the draft picks, cap space from the contract, and letting go of an established player.

if we didn't resign him this Oct and we let him go we would have been rewarded a 4th rd comp in 2019.. I read that somewhere during the aftermath

@Force16X last year was the 1st year teams would be allowed to trade Comp pick FYI

Another tough one to accept... Tree is a solid player and a solid dude...

I've said before that he's not the ideal inside LB for the 3-4... My optimal scenario was to cut Barron...move Tree to Baron's spot and get a real stout ILB ....

but 10 million for next year is a lot of money...there are some solid ILBs in free agency..and in the draft.... with some other pressing needs that 10 Million is going to help...

I still believe that we'll cut Baron ....

which now means that we need to replace all 4 of our starting Linebackers....

and the honest truth is that ..this needed to happen.....

my only real worry though is that with moving Quinn and Tree you are getting rid of 2 very high character leaders in your locker room... Donald and Brockers are still there...so is Joyner....but man... Tree and Quinn are solid guys...

I dont really understand this move.
Right there with ya brother. ‘Tree is a natural leader. Sometimes there’s bigger issues than the cap. Just my stupid opinion. Sending him to the Giants may bite us in the ass.

Looks like the Rams will be building the LB core around Barron. At least it looks that way for now.

The bigger statement is the realignment in positional value. At this point, I would keep Barron, but wouldn't be surprised if he goes as well. I've said it other places, but I don't see the Rams spending alot in FA or the draft at ILB even with this move. IMO Corey Littleon gets the start at one spot and if they don't keep Barron a mid-rounder will be next to him.

IMO the long-term vision is to invest heavily in the secondary, offensive playmakers, pass rushers and OL around a young QB. Wade won the Superbowl starting a late round pick and a late round pick they picked up off waivers as his ILBs. Granted there was a star-studded supporting cast around those ILBs, but I think that is the ultimate goal for the Rams

I was always thinking, this is the year Ogletree's going to come into his own. I thought the Rams mostly brought in Singletary to mentor Ogletree and was excited to see what affect he had on him. Unfortunately, Mike Jr. he was not.
I think he pretty much hit his ceiling and with our scheme change, this was a good time to make this move.
I also like how the Rams are sending their trades to the AFC

I don't see Barron being cut. Even as a bit of a misfit he is productive and we can't afford to get rid of him for nothing and open up another hole. He's got value in this defense, or any defense, on passing downs and does a decent enough job against the run given his size. He's a lot better tackler than Tree was and was better in coverage as well.

I’m hoping we get AD locked up but I really think they like some of our players and are going to make a couple big moves in FA as well as offing some of these draft picks to move around.

There's $5.2 million in savings (before the roster spot is filled) in 2018. But the savings rises to $11.6 million for 2019 and 2020, and then $10.6 million in 2021. That is a lot of money to go towards AD.

The Rams have coaches who are also known to be good teachers, they will develop some of this young talent and trade others up, this is a deep draft at positions where we require quality depth. jmo.
I trust the staff, this was just from the heart. STILL, they HAVE to nail this move.

Im fine with that. Its a matchup league. Rams usually had Barron or John Johnson covering TEs in man. IMO Barron played really well in coverage from that spot, especially early in the year when he was healthy. When he could just run and chase he made plays in the run game too, problems came when he had to take on blocks. You mitigate some of those weaknesses by letting him play with a guy that is more stout.

Ogletree, on the other hand, was a guaranteed first down on 3rd down if he was man to man with an RB because he was either getting beat or missing the tackle in space. Wade realized that about mid-season and would just blitz Tree instead of giving him coverage responsibilities where he was routinely abused. I dont know what happened because coverage was a strong point of his game early on, but last year his coverage fell to a level just as bad as his run defense. In terms of the leadership vacuum Goff will have C on his chest next year and so will Donald. Love to have those vet leaders like Tru and Tree, but you also need young guys to step up take the leadership reigns when those guys leave.
