Everyone here knows I've been predicting QB1 in the first round. But IMO the Rams have targeted probably 2 at most 3 QBs that project as fits for what McVay wants. McCarthy has the talent but he's very raw in the most important part of that "fit" which is reading and going through progressions accurately and quickly. That is something that absolutely can be coached. He would need two years to develop though he could be a starter in his second year but probably not a SB contending type of QB in 2025.

The two that project as fits for McVay's current offense are IMO Nix and Penix. That said the Rams will have to move up to get either. That is why Snead was ambiguous about drafting a QB in the first round. Their targeted QB must drop and they must find a trade partner. That said I think they will try to sign Wentz to a two year deal to be a backup and potential bridge starter in 2025 should Stafford retire in 2025 as I think he will. That would allow them to take someone like McCarthy and give him two years if needed to develop should they not be able to get their targeted QB. IMO they should be able to strike a conditional deal with say the Chargers, Titans, or perhaps the Giants.

So yeah if they can I think they will take a QB in round one if a trade up can be worked out If not then CB, Edge or LT would be in play in the first round IMO.

McCarthy has the arm talent but has a lot of issues with technique and of course learning to read and go through his progressions. He also tends to bail too quickly. McVay's offense isn't predicated upon needing a running QB, he wants a pure pocket passer with good accuracy and touch.

QBs like McCarthy and Rattler have the arm talent to be a starter in the NFL. But both need to show they can improve their technique issues and look like 2nd or 3rd round picks that might surprise in their 3rd year.

Of course Snead could always trade a 5th round pick to the Eagles for Tanner McKee who really isn't a fit for their scheme. He's a pure pocket passer with good arm talent. He played well last pre-season. At the very least they would get a good backup if not an eventual starter.
Time is a flat circle.

If Stafford stays healthy in 2024, I expect he'll be back in 2025. Same goes for 2026.
I certainly hope so. We're a contender with a healthy Stafford. Need to continue to build depth in O-Line, and give him a nasty defense. I hope Wentz re-signs. He looked good in horns and is a serviceable back-up. I hope he get's top tier # 2 pay. Can't afford the default forfeit games if Stafford has a 2 to 4 week absence. Playoffs are too physical to fuck around and find out with bad seeding.

I'm certainly warming up to the idea of grabbing Rattler and letting him sit for a couple years behind Stafford. Just unsure how early we would have to take him. He has all the tools but needs to develop his instincts.

Rattler seems the epitome of a developmental QB. Question is, what do you spend on him.

What makes anyone think McVay is interested in a developmental QB? I’m seriously asking. I think some mention that option because we would be in favor of that route. But it’s McVay that matters here. I just don’t see him interested in that. An older established Bennett was an option because he was for the backup qb as a cheap option and theoretically would require little development compared to most college QBs. He wasn’t picked as a future starter (imo).

I think if you look at the structure of Stafford's contract he's not expected to play in 2025. In both 2025 & 2026 there are roster bonuses attached to both years something not on previous years. No guaranteed money with only his guaranteed money over those two years to spread his cap hit over the contract.

When the contract was originally signed you can infer the context by it's structure. When Stafford talked about continuing to play he only said 2024. Both the Rams and Stafford have been acting like 2024 will be his last season. If they can't grab a targeted rookie then they are back to plan "B" IMO.

Yeah Goff will be a FA in 2025 but IMO Sean burned that bridge. It's why I think it's return to fuck'em picks this year to grab a future #1QB.
Stafford is set to earn $100m over those last two seasons. I doubt he retires if he's healthy.

And we would absorb $37m in dead money from cutting him - that isn't happening unless his play turns into compete shit.

Maybe if we drafted an unexpectedly great QB who is ready to start in 2025 on his rookie contract we could explore trading Stafford, but that seems so unlikely.

Stafford looked great this year. He's such a gamer. If he's healthy, he'll be a top five qb.

I also like the idea of picking the best QB available at pick 19 to sit behind Stafford and learn for a year or two. I was hoping it would possibly be McCarthy or Rattler. Otherwise, the Rams may be trading a boatload of picks for another starting QB form a team that has a decent QB that is on a bad team.
