Falcons. SMH. Wishful green-think. There better be a whole fleet of em working 24/7, otherwise this stadium will be coated in bird poop in 3 years. It will gum up the sidelines from all the birds nesting on top of the oculus. It will rain poop all over Erin Andrews. They will be nesting on top of every cable.
I love the design, but so much open structure is a maintenance money pit. I assumed from the beginning that there would be soffits closing off the bottom of the structure, to reduce maintenance costs & bird access, but then I watched as they painted all the steel framing... then, the 'roof' panels were attached, and they're perforated... hmm, soffits will only catch water with a perforated roof... but that's not the plan, is it?? it will also be internally lit, making this structure a beautiful perforated glowing warm 24/7 nesting habitat. Netting on the bottom of the roof trusses would help control bird access, be relatively inexpensive, and largely invisible. I hope they go that route. Otherwise, I agree with Neil's insinuations that there will likely be a serious bird poop problem.

He claims to be a scientist....he is just an actor. NO 'real' scientist has time for this. HE is a professional actor, and all his 'scientist' lines are written for him....I am sure I could be wrong, but wow....I don't believe anything about him
He is arrogant, maybe that’s what you’re picking up on.
I have a friend who has a double doctorate and works in chemical engineering as a scientist.
Spends 4-5 days a week in the lab and one day a week in the field on average.
He is a scientist.
He plays golf once or twice and week and enjoys drinking on a regular basis.
Not sure where you’re getting a scientist wouldn’t have time for a quick couple hour tv shoot.

Doing shoots like this is EXACTLY part of what Tyson DOES. It’s not that he “doesn’t have time for it”, it’s what he DOES. He writes books and participates in TV shows and publicity events in order to (a) make money and (b) educate the public about REAL science.

One of Tyson’s goals is to teach people to rely on basic, observable, verifiable facts. You know, so less people will make shockingly ignorant claims based on rumor and wild speculation. Like, “that man is a paid actor who gets his lines written for him to make him appear like a scientist”.

Very entertaining video and comment by @SteveBrown.

I actually would have enjoyed it more had he let the other gentleman finish what he was saying. Found statements like the 8 inches of slab over four inch base (of what I don't know) 10 mm rubber coating, the turf and sand build into the turf. I want to know more about this. Sounds interesting hopefully not too fast but, safe on the body. Wilson and Murray don't need that advantage.

It might have been a good idea if Niel had seen some of this thread before going out to the tour. He would have known about the Oculus scoreboard. Nice to hear about the earthquake proof construction.

Oh the bird poop.

Seems like keeping birds out of stadiums is an old problem. Netting was a big answer as you suggested. Here is a 2007 article.

Good video. Maybe we can not attack each other on this board though, just because all of us don’t sit at the feet of NDT.

Ok, but a 10 second search will get you all the info you need about his bona fides if you really believe he isn’t a real scientist.

He is not an unknown entity. I've seen plenty. I didn't say anything about him being a "real scientist" or not.

Like I said, great to see the video and learn more about the stadium. The guy giving the tour seemed very knowledgeable and humble.

Oh please.

It’s so misleading of you to claim it’s about “sitting at the feet of NDT.” It’s about recognizing an utterly ludicrous claim that someone is “an impostor who is being fed lines of what to say.”

As for your “tsk tsk?”

Pot, meet kettle.

Fair enough to this point, but I wasn't the one who attacked Tyson. Those aren't my words. I left all of that alone, except to say - not everyone subscribes to his theories, and don't assume his represents REAL SCIENCE. Science is about testing theories. There are plenty of great scientists that don't agree with him. And he is certainly a bully to those who disagree. Not impressed.

I have no quarrel with you, man. I also am not calling Tyson "not a scientist". Cheers

Not only was your response restrained and reasonable, but it piqued my interest.

You say there are “plenty of great scientists who disagree with him.”? And that NDT is a “bully” to those who disagree with him? Respectfully, what on earth are you talking about? Seriously, if you could provide any sort of link to document what you are saying, I’d be super interested to read it.

From my point of view, NDT is a scientist who believes what thousands of other scientists believe— that our notions of reality should be grounded in the scientific method, I.e., basic, observable, verifiable FACTS. Opinions are open to debate. Facts are not.

Yes, NDT has made it part of his life’s mission to fight against “science deniers”, and I laud him for doing so. For example— the notion that the earth is round (not flat) is a FACT, it’s not an OPINION.

As I say, if you could provide any links that undermine any of NDT’s scientific beliefs (not his personal behavior or opinions) I’d be interested.

Here’s a quote I found from NDT:

“Any time scientists disagree, it's because we have insufficient data. Then we can agree on what kind of data to get; we get the data; and the data solves the problem. Either I'm right, or you're right, or we're both wrong. And we move on.”

interesting choice of words. Dangerous, actually. What are his intentions in fighting these “deniers” you speak of. Like me for example.

The earth is a sphere. Of course. I don’t know why that becomes the “go to”.

As long as we are using the term “denier” to describe those that will not recognize scientific reality, what does Dr. Tyson say about the work of Dr. Mary Schweitzer and others in the discovery of soft tissue in the bones of nearly ALL dinosaur fossils?

How about the troubling violations of the laws of thermodynamics in explaining the Big Bang?

It is ironic. I see Tyson denying so much right in front of him.

Sorry. Driving on the road. Thought I’d pull over and give a couple quick responses. Good topic though.

Keeping it science.:)

Damn, I love me a good science debate! And love people who keep it civil but argue their points!

@Farr Be It and what heck are you talking about soft tissue being found in nearly all dinosaur bones? Sounds like fringe conspiracy theory to me of guy wanting YouTube followers, fame, or money coming up with. Fossils of that age seem extremely unlikely to ever contain soft tissues ( ps believe me I wish they could! I’m obsessed with bringing back Wolly mammoths etc... )

Here’s just a snipet of the study. Warning: conspiracy theory to follow!

Ok, I’ll bite.

“interesting choice of words. Dangerous, actually. What are his intentions in fighting these “deniers” you speak of. Like me for example.”

Yes,NDT chooses the word “denier” quite carefully and specifically. Dangerous? Yes! Instead of saying “science deniers”, one could easily say, “fact deniers.” When millions of people allow themselves to be “fact deniers”, this of course is dangerous. When people who are “fact deniers” rise to positions of power? Yes, dangerous.

My point is: from NDT’s point of view, he is aggressively trying to counter the views of those who deny science and deny facts. I share his view, of course.

The earth is a sphere. Of course. I don’t know why that becomes the “go to”.

I chose this as an example because (thankfully) 99% of people recognize this correctly as a “Duh of course” fact. But imagine if the majority of people actually believed the world was flat? Imagine if our world leaders believed the world was flat? That would have huge and devastating consequences to our policy decisions... right? This is NDT’s point. When millions of people believe stuff that is DEMONSTRABLY untrue, we get big problems.

Regarding a couple of your other points:

Re. Big Bang theory... I’m happy to dismiss “disagreements” about this issue because... well... the Big Bang theory involves a lot of stuff that is by definition beyond a human’s capacity to understand. (For example, how can “something come out of nothing” and how can “Time have a beginning”). So let’s not dwell on anything related to the Big Bang, because I’ll happily concede it is impossible to describe shared “facts” about such a difficult theory. When I talk about “science denial” I’m talking about simpler stuff... stuff like the earth is flat, gravity is real, and 2 +2 = 4.

Regarding “science denial”, it is of course a slippery slope, because so many people are prey to misinformation. For example: it is a scientifically proven fact that human beings did not co-exist with dinosaurs. The Flinstones ain’t real. There have been thousands upon thousands of scientific studies confirming this truth (that dinosaurs roamed the earth millions of years before man), yet it is a sad reality that millions of people are ignorant enough to believe otherwise. Again— this is not “opinion”... it’s FACT.

I watched your video regarding dinosaur bone tissue, but I’m not sure what your point is. My take is the same as for any other hypothesis: if hundreds of other scientists replicate and confirm Dr. Schweizer’s findings, this would provide powerful evidence that she is correct. If on the other hand hundreds of scientists can NOT replicate and confirm her findings, that would provide powerful evidence she is mistaken. Simple. That’s one of the linchpins of the scientific method: it’s REPEATABLE.

Again... if you can provide me with any one verifiable scientific study that NDT has unfairly ridiculed, I’d be happy to read about it.
