The Rams on Friday officially announced the hiring of Mike LaFleur as their next offensive coordinator.

Here are five things you should know about him:

1) Comes from a familiar coaching tree

Both LaFleur and Rams head coach Sean McVay worked under 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan at different points in their careers.

LaFleur worked with Shanahan with the Browns in 2014 when Shanahan became Cleveland's offensive coordinator, then followed Shanahan to Atlanta to take an offensive assistant job with the Falcons in 2015 when Shanahan became the Falcons offensive coordinator that same year.

McVay, meanwhile, overlapped with Shanahan in Washington from 2010-13 when they both worked under Shanahan's father, Mike, during Mike's tenure as its head coach. Both McVay and Kyle Shanahan became instrumental people in Mike's development as a coach, according to an August 2021 story by ESPN's Rich Cimini.

2) Passing background, but has experience with productive run games

During LaFleur's first season as Jets offensive coordinator, New York's run game overcame a difficult first half of the season to produce 50 more rushing yards per game over their final eight games compared to their first nine, with its 5.19 average yards per carry second-most in the NFL during that stretch.

When on the Browns coaching staff in 2014, LaFleur worked with an offensive line that aided Cleveland running backs in recording the second-most rushing touchdowns in the NFL that year (16) and the 12th-most rushing yards gained (1,648).

3) If that last name sounds familiar...

... Yes, he is the younger brother of Packers head coach Matt LaFleur, who was previously the Rams' offensive coordinator in 2017 (McVay's first season as head coach).

4) Distributing the ball around

LaFleur's third season as passing game coordinator for the 49ers (2019) saw their offense have 13 different players record at least one touchdown catch, which tied the NFL record for most players in a single season.

5) Quarterback-turned-safety in college

LaFleur spent his first three seasons at Elmhurst College as a backup quarterback before making the switch to safety his senior year.

There’s nothing better than watching your teams offense roll with a dominant run game led by an OLine that imposes their will on their opponents.

The 2018 Dallas playoff Game is still what I envision as great offense. Pound them and go up top for some big plays. Imagine Stafford driving that offense.

I don't follow coaches like many others here do. It does seem like solid hiring. I'm sure he is very familiar with this other LeFleur. This seems like very solid hiring. I'm confident that McVay knows what Shannahan is doing on offense already. McVay needs checks and balances on his entire offense including play calling. I doubt he gives up play-calling but, he should be more flexible with the implementation of game plans. Mike LaFleur can give McVay a new perspective on the Rams offense. The Rams are going to need better run blocking so they need to get healthy and maybe add a player or two on the offense line. Certainly improving the run game will be a priority.

No Rams coach besides Sean McVay has called the offensive plays for the Rams since 2017. The head coach has always handled that responsibility, even with the likes of Matt LaFleur, Kevin O’Connell and Liam Coen working on his staff as offensive coordinators.

That’s not expected to change in 2023. Mike LaFleur has officially come aboard as McVay’s newest OC but it sounds like he won’t be the play caller on offense like he was for the last two years with the Jets.

LaFleur isn’t worried about his transition away from being a play caller, noting that he didn’t call the plays in his four years as the 49ers’ pass game coordinator.

“For the years in San Francisco before that, I obviously didn’t call the plays, but honestly, it’s not even really on my mind at all right now,” LaFleur said Tuesday. “My mind is totally into let’s finish this staff, let’s get the right people for this offensive staff, and then let’s get to know these players. Let’s figure out what our roster is going to be moving forward and then let’s get the foundation of what this 2023 Rams offense is going to be. Then whatever happens in August through December, I’m going to be there to support and do my part. So not concerned about any of that, and again, excited to be here.”

The Rams haven’t announced which coach will call the offensive plays, and we may not get a definitive answer for a while. But there’s been nothing to suggest McVay will hand over the play sheet to LaFleur next season.

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – It didn't much time for new Rams offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur to get introduced to two of the players he would be working with.

Not long after arriving in L.A., LaFleur told Voice of the Rams J.B. Long on the Rams Revealed Podcast last week that head coach Sean McVay put him, quarterback Matthew Stafford and wide receiver Cooper Kupp in a group text to get that relationship started.

"Sean reached out with myself and Coop and Stafford on a text, and I look forward to as we get settled in – just got in it feels like 72 hours ago – kind of get our feet settled a little bit," LaFleur said. "Got my family here, gonna send them back to (New) Jersey because the kids gotta go back to school for a little bit and get back into a normal routine. And then really hit the ground running getting to know, not just Matthew and Coop, but all these guys. I want to reach out to all these guys and get to know them."

For LaFleur, the onboarding process is happening quickly both on and off the field.

While he was getting introduced to Stafford and Kupp, his wife and two children last week were getting introduced to the Los Angeles area through house hunting and looking at schools after the family flying into Los Angeles from New Jersey on Friday, Feb. 6.

Additionally, this week is when LaFleur was slated with join McVay and the rest of the coaching staff discussing the roster for the 2023 season this week.

Rams general manager Les Snead referred to the approach to that roster his offseason as a "remodel." Asked if he asked McVay about what he was stepping into and what the team was trying to accomplish, LaFleur said "you have some of those questions," but it wasn't a big deal to him given the Rams' previous success and those he'll be working with inside the organization.

"No matter what the roster was going to be, and there's always going to be changes in a roster, no matter what kind of season it's going to be, it wasn't a big deal," LaFleur said. "I know that, again, we're with the right people that are going to make this thing work."

As for the year ahead, LaFleur said "the goal is score points and win football games," but what things look like schematically will be an ongoing process. This week is about evaluating the roster, what their personnel can do, and what they need add.

"Sean has evolved, like all great coaches do every single year, and tried to stay ahead of the curve, and that's what we're going to do," LaFleur said. "We're not going to just obviously look at our roster, what we did in San Francisco or in New York and L.A. What does the 2023 Rams look like? We got a great idea, but we're going to put our heads together, and it's going to be a lot of work, and it's going to be fun putting this thing together."

He is very focused on moving forward. Sounds a lot like McVay!
