Stafford is not even close to finished, talent wise. He is as good as ever. He looked even better than in '21, to my eye. He had some real stinkers that year towards the end of the regular season. Remember his INTs vs the Titans in prime time?
His stats aren't as good as in '21, so people might get the impression he is slowing down, but the lower stats are just a function of how this team has evolved over the years. We aren't asking him to do as much. Not because he cannot. But because we are no longer a pass first team. When the chips are down, he always plays at an absolutely elite level that leaves you in awe. Week 1 vs. Detroit. Prime time vs. the Vikings with the season on the line. In a shootout vs. Buffalo. All playoffs. Heck every playoffs. And every December. His December stats are mind blowing.
Aaron Rodgers didn't really show signs of decline until this past season at 40. Brady played to 40 at a high level. No reason Stafford cannot do it too. The bigger risk is him just choosing to walk away. He has a wife and kids, already has a Super Bowl, and gets beat up pretty badly. But he is a competitor and wants to win. I think he wants to solidify his HOF case too. The Rams have far and away the best QB + HC duo in the NFC except maybe Jayden Daniels and Dan Quinn, and a young loaded roster with cap space that seems poised to be a real heavy weight contender for the next 2-3 years. So I think he retires once the first wave of young guys need new contracts in 2-3 years, as that will mean more roster turnover, and though I cannot see us falling off, another "re-build on the fly" season or two where we will rely on McVay's superb coaching to punch above our weight rather than actually having the best horses. I don't see him leaving just as the Rams enter prime contention mode.
