I wonder if it leads to their thoughts of getting a bridge QB and drafting a young QB. Loading up on QB Coaching and a competent bridge QB (ASSUMING Stafford leaves and Stafford would be the BEST QB option)
Van Pelt was Mays coach last year... I think it's more likely that LaFleur moves on and Van Pelt gets promoted to OC next year. And then maybe we get our QB.

I think it goes hand in hand with what team's would be willing to trade. So a team might say they'd pay him 50 mill, but at that number they wouldnt give up more than a 4th round pick. I definitely think its a 2-part conversation.
I cant see a team giving up premium draft pick(s) and paying top dollar for a 37 year old who gets banged up every year. That's the type of stuff that gets guys fired. Take the Steelers for instance, Tomlin is rumored on the hot seat each year he doesnt win a playoff game. He convinces the Steelers to go "all in" and Stafford gets hurt, misses a lot of time and they dont win. Probably the straw that breaks the camel's back
I really think you missed my point.

So Stafford, being a good team player and hoping to get a couple more SBs, gives the Rams what at the time was considered a friendly deal.
The Rams suck the next year and instead of ramping up again, using the money Stafford left on the table to keep the run going, the Rams dump salary. If I was Stafford I would be asking for the money I left on the table also. Seeing as the Rams probably used the "we will need money to keep the talent around you".

Seems to me after rethinking some of this, it might very well be Stafford going after all he can get after the Rams decided to rebuild right after he gave them a break. Why would Stafford come to LA for a rebuild when he left Detroit to get away from one.

So I think Stafford might have been thinking the last 2 years that he got burned and LA owes him.
He got the extension after they won the Superbowl. He played the ‘22 season on the last year of the Detroit contract. His extension didn’t kick in until after the horrible ‘23 season. (Although he got a nice signing bonus)

He signed his extension after the SB. Then everybody got injured on the OLine then he got a bruised spine. Then the Rams ditched salary. He played pretty great the second half of the 23 season. Asked for more before last season, with all parties knowing this was coming.

The decision to give the good deal was before the run it back. He got his bonus before the 22 season. So while the current contract didn't technically start till 23, for all intents and purposes, it started before the 22 season.

I was pissed when the Rams decided to dump salary and I am sure it was not expected by Stafford when he signed his deal. The Rams did the last thing he was thinking when he signed.

Schrager's an interesting one, he never shares enough detailed info that he can be proven wrong with the Rams and only enough info to be vaguely right.

God, I hope we don't go with Rodgers. Van Pelt though was his QB coach in GB, no? I don't see how he and McVay coexist without someone like that.
Van Pelt becomes a very interesting hire. Rodgers loved him and was very public about his displeasure. Not sure if this is anything to read into this or not but something to think about

There's more and more smoke about a trade. Don't know if it's both sides playing hardball or because something will soon happen.

The next step for the Los Angeles Rams this off-season will be free agency. The NFL free agency period will kick off in March. That is when teams and players find out how much their teams value them and how much a player wants to go elsewhere.

It is an exciting time for all NFL teams and fan bases. It gives them a little preview of what their respective team can look like next season.

One of the biggest headlines that will go on all offseason is whether the Rams will trade veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford. Stafford wants to play for the Rams to close out his Hall of Fame career.

The crew and former NFL players from Fox Sports show The Facility gave their thoughts on how they see this Stafford situation ending.

"People do not realize with Stafford not only do you have to trade for him, you have to give him a legitimate deal. Three years $150 million something like that," said former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel.

"He is probably worth more than that, I think he is a top five quarterback. Should the Steelers do it, no. Two reasons the dude needs protection to be good. The Steelers offense line is not that. That is the reason why they started Justin Fields while Russell Wilson's ankle was hurt."

"Stafford is a true pocket passer, he is a gunslinger, he is tough as nails, but I feel like he might get hurt behind that offensive line."

"His whole career he has never played on an outdoors team. I think he needs to go to another indoor team. And who is the other indoor team out there, the Minnesota Vikings."

"Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell was Stafford's offensive coordinator when the Rams won the Super Bowl. So I will not put it past Kevin O'Connell and the Vikings one of the best receivers, if not the best receiver in the game Justin Jefferson."

"Look Stafford is 37 years old. You can get two to three more years out of him if you do not love what JJ McCarthy is. If the Steelers do it, it is ridiculous. If the Vikings do it, I think it is awesome."

"I think it is going to come down to a two-team race between the Vikings and the Rams."

I have a slight problem with the whole notion of "next qb up gets the big bag". Just because other teams are silly enough to give massive contracts to good-to-very-good qbs (Im looking at you, Dallas, Green Bay & Jacksonville) doesn't mean that other should follow suit.

Especially when you have a McVay. You can get 80-90% of the recent Rams productivity for possibly 50% of the money (your mileage may vary:sunglasses:)

Look at how manyare hoping that SF pays Purdy (PURDY!!) a huge contract because we know how much it will hamstring them in the future.

Stafford signed a 160 million contract in 2022. That contract had 120 mil in guarantees. That's not enough? I know QB's have gotten bigger contracts since but he signed it. Seems like he's trying to leverage the Rams and Snead doesn't play that game. If Stafford just wanted to play for championships it seems like he'd be fine with the money. I don't recall Brady doing anything like this.
Brady didn't care about the money b/c his mentality was all about the winning. And his wife made multiple-times more than any amount of money the Pats were gonna give him.

If Stafford goes to Vikings I'm drafting Justin Jefferson over almost everybody in fantasy football next season. He'd feed that guy 2500 yards and 25 TDs.

They should teach this in college on how to not do deductive reasoning

Firstly.... Fuck that, respectfully.
I hope I'm still alive when my kids reach 33.
I hope they still seek out my fatherly advice and cherish it. Dad, pop, daddy, father, old man... I don't care what they call me, as long as they call me.

Secondly.....As far as money goes:
Make as much as you can while you can. Make sure you are making money even while you sleep.
With any luck, find a career path doing something you love whether you're a W2 prostitute or a Self-Employed Pimp.
At the end, in their death bed, nobody is going to look back and wish they'd worked more.

Football is a business. The minute these players forget that is the moment they lose their edge. Do what's best for yourself and the group.
I am a grown ass man and never have called my dad for a work/business decision once. Pro sports players families, well face it, they care about MONEY !! And the more they make the better chance some of it trickles down to them.
Matt Freaking Stafford is a border line HOFer. He stays with the LA Rams for 4-5 years he will be a lock HOFer.
And when you are on your death bed that is not the worst thought to have. Accomplishments are meaningful.
No one remembers all the sports players who just made a ton of money. They remember winners.

Yup, that is the issue and the serious disadvantage the Rams are in.
A new team can pay him 110 mill for 2 years, and spread it out over 3 years, 33 mill cap per year
The Rams can not, as they already are carrying over 100 mill of cap on his current deal for the next 2 years, which doesnt go away and only about half of which can be absorbed in to a new deal.
Can you explain this to me? Not questioning you at all - trying to understand.
So dead cap to me over two years says MS is guaranteed $50M a year for '25 and '26, and if that's the case, what's the problem?
That he wants $10 - 20M in addition to that both years?
I will never understand the cap in the nfl.
