Why the Rams won the Stafford-Goff trade in an absolute landslide

Why the Rams won the Stafford-Goff trade in an absolute landslide (yahoo.com)

Yes, the Rams now have no first-round picks through at least the 2024 season. They may have thrown their first-rounders out of the equation through an entire Presidential administration that just started if they get a little frisky down the road. But in today’s NFL, when you believe that you have a team that is all the way there outside of the most important position on the field, you have to do whatever it takes to get yourself out of that.

Look. The Rams were nuts in the first place for giving Jared Goff the kind of contract extension they gave him back in September, 2019 — a contract which revealed the franchise’s belief that Goff was a quarterback on the rise. As I wrote at the time, the tape and stats showed very different stories. So, the Rams made a really big, bad mistake — they overbet on a quarterback they believed to be better than he ever will be.

But even with offloading their first-round picks in 2022 and 2023 for Matthew Stafford, the Rams have now done the smart thing a franchise does when it’s that most important position away from actual greatness. They went out and got a quarterback who is absolutely better than the guy they got in every possible way… and they got another franchise to accept the debt of the terrible extension they signed him to in the first place.

Because let’s be clear about this. If you want to talk about Matthew Stafford in terms of QUARTERBACK WINZ, just sit outside while the adults are talking. Jared Goff has benefited through his NFL career with his relationship with Sean McVay. Matthew Stafford has had to navigate through a series of dumpster fires through most of his NFL career, and as I posited in a Stafford tape piece last week, Stafford lives on an entirely different plane.

Everything McVay wants to do — passing out of run-heavy sets, play- and run-action, the ability to hit total route concepts all over the field — Stafford is far better at all of this than Goff will ever be. Period, full stop. And the Rams have a $33 million cap hit for Stafford in 2021, and a $26 million cap hit in 2022. Stafford will turn 33 on February 7. There’s a lot of meat on the bone.

As for the Lions? They have all kinds of draft picks, but they’ve married themselves to one of the league’s more limited quarterbacks through the next couple of years, and the debt is frightening.
Jared Goff has $43 million in fully guaranteed money left on that deal — $25M in base salary in 2021, a $2.5M roster bonus due on the 2nd day of the 2021 league year in March and another $15.5M roster bonus due on the 2nd day of the 2022 league year.

Sometimes, you have to look beyond the obvious to see how things work in the future. The Rams got a much, much, better quarterback at a time when they have everything else they need to contend. The Lions just hamstrung themselves with a supremely limited quarterback at a time when they’re going through a massive rebuild. Draft picks or not, the Rams won this trade in a landslide, and that’s why.

I do like the fact that every sports show has this as its top story and put the Brady praise on the back burner for a day or two
I would put this as thread winner but I already gave that to someone else and you can't have two thread winners.

Anyway I have spent way too long discussing this situation and I need to go back to work.

I am going to have a pissed off boss tomorrow

My guess is that the thinking was that Goff would continue to improve. He didn't.

Stop being so REASONABLE! This is a message board! You need to show the inability to tolerate your own emotional reactions. And in doing so, flee into black and white thinking! Take your nuance to some long form journal!

So the initial shock of the trade has worn off. I haven't read all 1000 pages of this thread so I'll probably say things others have brought up. I have a few thoughts, so hopefully this will be somewhat coherent:

- As I’ve said in a few other posts, I’m a proud Cal Bear and was ecstatic when the Rams moved back to LA, and when they traded up to draft Goff. It was like a dream come true.
- I was thrilled with Goff’s development in 2017 and 18. I loved that he proved doubters wrong at the time. Unfortunately he unquestionably regressed the last 2 years and as much as I love Goff as a Cal guy, it became harder to overlook his mistakes.
- With that said, I thought our best choice was to go one more year with Goff, improve the OL, get a deep threat, and run it again - unless we could get Watson. So initially I was stunned and underwhelmed with this trade, especially given the picks we sent to Detroit.
- BUT, I did say in a thread last week that Stafford was one of the few non-elite QBs I would consider taking over Goff.
- Now that Stafford is a Ram and I watch more of his clips, I’m liking what I see.
- This trade is a career-defining move for Snead and McVay. If they don’t get back to the offensive prominence of 2017-18, this trade will be a failure and McVay’s shine as an offensive genius will quickly fade. Everyone who thought it was Goff holding this offense back vs. systemic/coaching/personnel issues - we'll have chance to see. The excuses are gone now - we expect a high level of play from this offense.
- Back to Goff - I’ll root for him in Detroit and hope he can turn things around.
- Hopefully this can be a win-win trade - our offense takes off with Stafford, and Goff proves that he's a quality starting QB independent of McVay.
- We'll also see how well the Rams continue to draft mid-late round picks - how much of that was due to Brad Holmes? We'll find out in the coming years, and hopefully Snead and co. can keep that up since we won't have 1st round picks for the next few years.

As said before, I hate not having first round picks for the next 3 years.

It ruins the first day of the draft for me dammit

Who has said that we will suck. No - we have said that we will be hampered by it.

Not resigning Saffold due to CAP issues sucked big time and our OL has suffered because of it.

We can always make CAP room but we can't get the ONE or TWO players to put us over the top.

We needed a center and/or inside linebacker last year to put us over the top.

We have both or even possibly either one - we go to the super bowl. I am that convinced about it.

But we did not have the CAP room to get either.

The same woes as all good teams. The Oline sucked due to not having a good center, which I've been saying for three years. However other things come into play. Maybe if they don't trade for Ramsey then they get their center. Which free agents center did they miss out? Was there one that fit the blocking scheme? Ditto for ilb. Few good teams ever get all of the premium FAs to fill every deficiency. Teams that usually have extra cap are rebuilding, fully or partially.

Do we now own the 2 biggest dead cap hits in NFL history?

If you have been watching the sidelines for the past couple years .... its pretty obvious somethign was.

Mcvay looked consistently baffled when goff came off the field.
I think the last straw was that pass in the Seattle game.

That broke the camels back.

Goff is going to have a tough time in Detroit. For him to succeed he's gonna have to get back to the basics and show improvement in particular on his vision and reads. And on top of that there's a bit of a rebuild going on. Being the starting QB for a rebuild is not a good place but he's got nobody to blame but himself. This is a big boy league and you can't rest on what you did 2 years ago. His film this year was bad and the opinion around the league on him is not good because these guys see a QB playing like a rookie at times which is really bad when you're a vet. So pull your head out of your posterior Jared and make the most of that Detroit opportunity.

For Stafford I'll say this guy is going to benefit from McVay's scheme marriage of run/pass (he has not had that level of coordination consistently in his career) and the Rams' run game should be beastly this season. Hopefully they'll be able to redo both Woody and Kupp and avoid trading one of them. As this team stands right now and just making one assumption which is that they'll go get a Center finally... Stafford is undoubtedly on cloud fucking nine right now. And rightly so.

We should all be happy that QB, which was one of our biggest issues, is solved now. Next up is some critical cap gymnastics and what I hope is a limiting of bleeding by finding a way to tag Floyd. Some big issues remaining to load up for that Super Bowl run. How bout that shit eh? :beer2:

Sorry but I don't think losing Leonard Floyd is or JJ is gonna significantly hinder the team.
They may want them to leave now so they can recoup 3rd round picks.

So I can see them not keeping anyone and then bargain shop for a few guys to fill holes.

Terrell Lewis is critical now assuming Floyd leaves. He has to stay healthy.
