I was thinking more so in winning games that mattered. Stafford is fine and all...but so is Goff.
What separates Stafford so much more that he is worth what we gave up?
I spent the night watching clips of Stafford. At first it pained me because I was wrong. Then I got excited because me being wrong meant the deal was much better than I initially thought.
1) Arm. Goff has a good arm. Stafford has a GREAT arm.
2) Processing speed. Goff struggles sometimes processing pressure. Stafford clearly processes MUCH faster.
3) Mobility. Goff at 26 is BARELY more mobile than Tom Brady and Brady slides better in the pocket at 43. Stafford is more mobile than Rodgers in the pocket.
4) Toughness. Both are very tough.
5) Football IQ. Goff has decent awareness. Stafford has a very high football IQ.
6) Eye Test. Based on what McVay clearly covets for his offense, it's easy to see that Stafford is a perfect fit.
7) Deep ball. One of the things Goff has really struggled with the last two years is hitting the deep ball in stride. Stafford excels at this
I'm hoping that Stafford is kinda like Jim Plunkett for us. Plunkett was a #1 overall pick (Patriots) who struggled and was traded for a QB and two 1st round picks (SF). He went on to win 2 Super Bowls (Raiders). Stafford's had a much better go than Plunkett did, but there are some similarities. Point being that he had uneven success at his first stop and when he went to a stop with very good Offensive coaching (Tom Flores), he flourished. Not by today's standards, but led the team to 2 Super Bowls. It's not a completely parallel story.
Hopefully we keep both Woods and Kupp because with Akers and Higbee and Jefferson, that's a very sure handed group. While Stafford has had individual weapons including time with Calvin Johnson, who was often triple teamed, Stafford's never had a group of weapons like this.
The rest of the league is right to be worried, especially the rest of our division...
