I get that, but I don’t see cap space clearing for this year. Seems like we are paying more. A little space in 2022 and 2023 it’s all good. But I don’t see any immediate cap clearing at all on this trade.

Apparently there are guarantees that will affect this.

We'll have to wait for the details, but apparently we save a good bit of money... including 2022 cap hit

I’m stunned. Not really excited about the trade. My only thought here is there must have been a serious disconnect between Goff and McVay. I love McVay and I think Snead drafts well. I love the idea that they want to reward players that have played well for us but I’m hoping they’ve learned their lesson at this point. Goff shouldn’t have gotten the contract he received but I understand why he got it. It was preemptive and unfortunately it didn’t pan out. In fact, Goff regressed and it probably pissed McVay off. Understandable. Regardless, I just don’t love us giving up so much draft capital. If we had done this for Watson, I’m ecstatic. For Stafford...eh.

But here’s the thing. FO was right to move on from Gurley. McVay has completely changed our team from the dumpster fire it was for many years. So, as much as I’m stunned and a bit saddened by how everything has gone down, McVay and Snead have gotten us to the playoffs 3 out of his 4 years.

I’m still taking this over the Linehan, Spags debacles. Not happy but I’m trying to trust our staff and front office on this one. I hope it works out for both sides.

my thoughts exactly. We need to trust this staff and front office. Everyone seems quick to forget 05-2016 years and how miserable it was. We have a competent coach and FO. We were held back by our QB the last few years (I know many don’t see it that way) and our FO made an aggressive move to fix it. I trust them until I have a reason not to

The Rams have now traded 4 first round picks 2 second round picks 3 third round picks paid $81 million dollars to Jared Goff to get Matt fucking Stafford and his soon to be 33 year old 62% career completion percentage and some of you are happy with this? I'll think about coming back maybe eventually. Snead and McVay gone will help speed it up.

People talked about needing a more mobile QB that was what McVay wanted. And we got a 33 year old statue back there who can't complete the ball.

We lost to GB in the playoffs so we got a guy who is 7-13 vs them. He's beat the Niners and the Seahawks each once in his career and can't win vs the shitty teams in his division the Bears and the Vikings.

We are now paying $42 million to the QB this year and with Goff have over $30 million in dead cap money again!

We have an OLine that has one guy approaching 40 and a bunch of mediocre guys now protecting a guy who can't run and gets hurt.

The Rams go played pure and simple and deserve to be laughed at by the rest of the league and her fans. Bill O'Brien is proud of Snead what a colossal fucking joke.

IMO people aren't even that mad about losing Goff, its the two 1st round picks. But they will be super late 1st rounders anyways and we knew offloading Goff's contract would cost extra. Great QB play will offset those feelings very quickly.

What bums me out is that they gave up six picks, including an extra first to move up and draft Goff and then five years later have to trade away more picks, including another first, just to get someone to take him.

I wish Les thought ahead a little bit more. He's just too myopic for my taste.

The only way I can get behind this trade is if we use the cap room to fortify the offensive line and retain Floyd.
I keep seeing this mentioned - but there is no 2021 cap relief. We pay less to Goff in 2021, but now add in Stafford and we’re actually paying more in 2021 to our starting QB combined. 2022 starts the net relief.

In case any of you missed me saying it. Be glad that the Rams organization is proactive. If Goff is not the guy to get it done, like McVay thinks, be glad they moved on from him.
Also be glad that in an offseason with at least three competitive teams in San Fran, Indy, and the Rams, that Snead and company were agggressive and made the move that they feel needed to be made, instead of allowing the Niners or Colts to dictate the situation. I bet Shanahan is livid.

And if you think the Texans will be looking to deal with teams that will have late first round picks, well I’m sure that’s not their preference. Plus they just saw what Detroit got for Stafford, so now they will want more. So theRams set the market.

Stafford is a stud. This offense will really shine now. Early 30s not too old. He will be fine and our rams will finally score points. Kudos to the micsneeds. Go rams!

NFLN reports that multiple teams were willing to give up first round picks this year for Stafford. If memory serves, when you project out years, 2022 and 2023 first rounds drop a round in value every year? If so, we gave up a 2nd and two 3rd's plus Goff for Stafford.....Am I right?

Consider that if the cap is not raised or is reduced, then many mid tier free agents will likely sign one year deals in hopes fair a big camp expansion in 2022. They Rams will be in a better situation by then.

Time will tell if this was the correct move ... it looks stupid right now.

All the best to Jared , I hope he plays well and shows us what a stupid decision it was.

Will get behind Stafford ... what choice does a fan have?

I just love hearing everyone all up in arms over this move like any of us had a say in the matter. McVay and Snead get paid to do this shit but some people here think they know better. It’s laughable really hearing people say things like “I may stop supporting this team” but spent hours upon hours defending Goff. Way to show where your loyalty rests.

I’m thrilled over this move for one reason and one only: our organization felt this was best for the team right now and they went for it. I support this team no matter what and I look forward to ‘21 and for Stafford under center.

For real. Do what's needed to win.

I see that he's only got 2 yrs left on his deal w/a potential buyout this season. Not sure how the money works with teams trading hands.

Ugghh i'm NOT excited. Lions fan friend blowing up my phone too. He's pumped. Their rebuild just got a whole lot easier. Ugghhh.

Man you don't trade 1st rd picks for players like a 33 yr old Stafford. You trade those picks to move up into the top 5 or get a Jalen Ramsey or someone elite with a whole career ahead of them. I love what the Rams have done with their wheelin and dealin since 2016. I hate this one.

Goodnite.

Do you know what this means? That my theory of McVay leading a loaded athletic QB backfield on a football throwback revolution is as crazy as you guys thought it was.

It also means some other things. But we have all offseason to analyze this and we will use every moment of that I assure you so I think I'm gonna say...

Welcome to the horns Matthew Stafford and family. I hope you win us some Super Bowls. :beer2:

I would agree with you if we haven't been drafting so well with our mid round picks.. rounds 2-5. We've been killing it there lately and we've had no 1st rounder as is in 5 years. Players > picks... ALWAYS. And getting out of Goff's contract!!!?? Who the hell thought we could do that.

People aren't thinking enough about the Stafford/McVay combo. It's going to be insane I'm telling you right now. If we sign a deep threat we will be competing for an NFC title next year.
Dude I'm digging your optimism right now. Keep it up!!

The Texans may get two firsts for Watson but I’m sure they won’t have to take on an atrocious contract like Goff’s. Anyone believing that the Lions completely fleeced us is entitled to that opinion but it’s the price you pay to get that shit off your books.

Cant argue the contract decisions my dude. They've been bad bad bad bad bad bad...and yea we're paying the price with all the dead cap $. There's no doubt about it. But this move actually helps our cap number in future seasons ironically enough.

I'm just purely talking about QB for QB, and want people to understand the talent that Stafford has. He's been surrounded by shit support and coaching in Detroit for YEARS and has still carried that team on his arm. Pairing him with McVay/ Akers/ Kupp/ Woods/ Higbee has to be a dream scenario for him.
QB for QB is no problem, we may be better. But, we're paying someone our draft picks to take Goff's contract off our hands and eating a shit ton of cap space because we gave Goff a contract we didn't have to. Our cap will be better next year (depending on if they give Stafford a new contract, they probably will because they haven't learned their lesson yet.
The cap space would have been much better if they would have waited on Goff and said good bye when he expired this year.

This is a great move imo. I couldn’t be happier. Stafford has never had a coach, offense or team around him as good as the Rams are right now. I cannot logically predict that he will play worse. There is no way Goff leads this team past the Chiefs offense and Mahomes.
