There are no RBs in this year's draft class that compare to how I had Fournette ranked coming out of LSU. I thought the Jags picked him a bit too high, but I still expected Fournette to perform better than he has at the NFL level. Having said that, where a player lands out of the draft is huge to development. And Jacksonville is a mess. Arguably the worst mess in the NFL right now. It is important to keep that in mind as well.
In Fournette, we are getting a bonafide #1 RB, even if he isn't an elite one right now, with the possibility of him reaching his draft potential in a good environment to become a top 5ish. Nobody we'd be in a position to draft this year could bring us that. He can also provide some good power, which would be a nice compliment to Henderson. He's also on his rookie deal, so he isn't overly expensive, although he would certainly be pricier than anyone we would draft in the mid-to-late rounds of this year's draft.
On the other hand, he is going to want real money soon, so he is likely nothing more than a short-term answer. He does have some injuries in his past. He has under achieved to date. And some people are also wondering if he is a headcase. I do not mind the Cam Newton comments much, which I don't consider egregious in the first place, and again - he is in Jacksonville.
I'd like it if Leonard Fournette was more efficient. His volume of carries is huge - they really feed him in Jacksonville. You have to remember that when looking at his numbers. At the same time, he has put up very respectable stats as the focal point of that offence with almost no other weapons. I'd have to check the stats, but I imagine he faced tons of stacked boxes.
End verdict: if we can get him on the cheap (e.g. a 5th round pick - which allegedly might be enough to get it done) and make the financials work, I hope we grab him. Worst case scenario at that price, he becomes a cheap stop-gap option at RB as we address another needs. We have lots of holes to fill this year. I'd rather use a mid round pick at a position other than RB, if we can get Fournette for a 5th as rumored. we can draft a long-term RB with a higher pick in future years, when we either have less holes to fill and/or Henderson shows he isn't part of the answer going forward. RB is a position you can draft any year.
