Larry Fitzgerald: I’ve never seen a rookie QB come in like Kyler Murray

Larry Fitzgerald has seen a lot in his 16 seasons with the Cardinals, but he hasn’t seen a quarterback like Kyler Murray.

Fitzgerald told former Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner on NFL Network that Murray has taken over Arizona’s offense like no quarterback before him.

I’ve never seen a quarterback come in so quickly and be able to command an offense,” Fitzgerald said. “I mean, from Day 1, he’s out there checking the different plays, sliding the line, different protections, getting us in screens when blitzes are coming. His understanding of the offense is crazy. I mean, from Day One. I think that’s going to give us a great advantage, to play fast from the first preseason game all the way to the start of the regular season and giving him the keys to the car and letting him is going to be great for us.”

The knock on Murray coming into the NFL was that his size would be a liability when facing live defenses — something he doesn’t face in training camp. So we need to see Murray in a game before we can draw any conclusions about him. But in the protective red jersey in training camp, Murray has impressed.
I know it’s written in stone to put down recently drafted players from divisional rivals, but man, I think he’s going to be special. I followed his football career since he was a Sophomore in HS & he always left my jaw dropping.

The kids is good there’s no denying it. I fully expect him to come out and put on a show for a while. But like almost all QBs, getting hit by NFL players is the great equalizer. Especially behind that oline.

He is not that smart. He will have a few splash plays, make Sports Center. Big deal. He will get broken like a twig at some point. Then have to try and change his game to stay alive. But he is too short and not smart enough. He will have to learn how to read defenses and take it all it. But he is a midget.
Flash in the pan. Phillips, Donald and co will have something for him.

Let's see..Matt Leinhart-Bust
Rosen-Traded after first year and probably knee-jerk.
Kyler Murray - Short and fast and has never been hit for real in the NFL.

I guess Larry likes him, but would he say anything bad about him at this point? or at any point? Let's see how he does after Aaron Donald gets ahold of him several times in the 1st game. So who is the back up QB in Zona? lol

Aaron Donald is intelligent on how to sack SBs without getting a penalty. Doubt he’ll injure Kyler or any other QB any time soon.

Donald, nor any Ram, tries to injure QB's...but that little dude better stay in the pocket when running or it's open season on the short guy. You guys don"t have a good history of keeping QB's healthy, so..

It does, but that seems to apply even once a certain QB puts up good numbers, goes 24-8 including a Super Bowl trip, lol.

But anyway....not having to learn a new offense will obviously benefit your guy quite a bit. NFL defenses and speed of the game will be a challenge. I saw a tweet where Murray said he's "already seen all the defenses" or something like that. Unless he was quoted out of context that's a silly thing to say.

I'm excited to see how he does week 1. I think he has some success early.

I like opposing teams fans stopping by.

I’m not saying this because he is a Cardinal but because I don’t think he’ll transition to the NFL as a franchise QB.

It’ll be interesting to see what Kingsburry is going to try. Either way I hope you finish above the other pos teams in our division! Lol

Yea, he’ll definitely need to learn & adapt to the speed of the game. He will be playing against bigger, stronger, & faster guys than he did in college, but he’ll also play along with those guys as well, though they won’t be as talented right off the bat.

Hmm, I don’t see that tweet anywhere. Maybe it was Kurt saying that when he interviewed him recently. He definitely thinks highly of him.

Kyler vs Earl Thomas in week 2 is a matchup I can’t wait for. I know Earl is one of the ultimate chess players in the NFL & I can’t wait to see how Kyler reacts & adapts to it.

I'm assuming it came from here. 8:00 min mark. He was asked about NFL defenses and he referred to the defenses that Kingsbury saw in college.

"I don't know if there's much more that you could possibly see as far as defenses go. Referring to the Big 12.

I suspect there are 31 defenses in the NFL he could face that would present things he never saw in the Big 12.

Hopefully he’ll go up the same ladder that recent Big 12 QBs, Baker Mayfield & the reigning MVP, went.

It's cute when fans try to act like QB size doesn't make a difference in the NFL, and when they act like running QBs don't frequently prosper early, until they take one hit too many. And then the fans spend years acting surprised when their team's huge investment in those QBs is less than successful.

Here's a hint - in the pocket, diminutive QBs have a large number of passes tipped, some of those intercepted.

Outside of the pocket the QBs are relatively fair game, with guys who are bigger and faster than most of the players they faced in college - virtually all of them are bigger and faster, in fact. The occasional small QB who runs survives - Wilson is an example - but the majority of them don't, and have short careers as productive starters. Does RG3 ring a bell?

Kyler isn’t a running QB. He’s a great passer that can run. Film & stats show that.

This is always hilarious because this goes for every rookie QB ever. Does his teammates not get bigger or faster either? Or does that just not fit the narrative?

You’re the first person I seen call RG3 small. Damn shame Kyler isn’t 6’4 which would increase his chances of durability with the likes Cam Newton, Andrew Luck, Deshaun Watson, Carson Wentz, etc. Their height has for sure shielded them into being made of steel.

All I can say is Murray is ahead of the rest of the team in terms of the offensive scheme because it's the same one he played in college. So yeah he better know it. He had fewer bat downs in college because he wasn't playing in a drop back system. But he still has to learn to read an NFL defense. Spread offenses give the QB one maybe two reads then dump off or run. Thats exactly why they pretty much failed at the NFL level. Good NFL defenses will take away those quick reads, then what? Run or force the throw. He already has a penchant of forcing throws. He will learn he can't get away with it nearly as often in the NFL. He's likely to put his defense on short fields which will likely mean a mediocre record at best. It will be interesting to see if Klingsbury gets more than 2 or max of 3 years. IMO if they have two losing seasons in a row he's gone. I see AZ finishing last in the NFCW the next two years looking for a new coach and putting their program back at least another 2 years.

My guess is that they will be forced to poach one of Andy Reid's coaches to replace Klingsbury.

Rushing out the door, but had to reply to his hilarity. EVERY running QB when they come into the NFL is defended by their fans as "they're not really a running QB".

Murray got a significant amount of value either from his rushes, or from teams routinely having to be prepared for him to rush. That, my friend, is a rushing QB. Trying to redefine it won't make a damn bit of difference to NFL defenses. Either he runs a fair amount - in which case he will end up taking numerous hard hits until he likely breaks - or he stops running, in which case a major amount of his threat disappears. That's why so few such QBs have long, productive careers in the NFL.

Not sure what this lie has to do with me.

You have an odd definition of a rushing QB.

A “rushing QB” is a QB that struggles with arm talent. Weak arm, cannot throw in tight windows, accuracy problems, progression problems, etc, hence the reasons why RG3 & Kaep didn’t succeed for very long, while Russ is able to keep having great seasons & putting Seattle on his back. Same traits that Kyler succeeds at. Tell me, little small Russ has gotten hit a ton, why is he still playing football? Isn’t he supposed be retired according to you? Why is it always the big mobile QBs that get injured & not little small Russ?

Best of luck to you & the Cards this year. My best friend lives in Glendale AZ and is a big Cards fan, so I always hope the best for him as he takes the losses pretty hard.

Height helps, does it have anything to do with durability? Of course not, however, Murray will need to protect himself like Russell Wilson, ensuring he slides (baseball player so that is huge) and running out of bounds. I believe he'll be a great QB as I also believe the Arizona Cardinals will score many points and give up a ton as well.
