We face a dilemma defensively this week. Logic would possibly dictate that our bend but not break type of defense would be ideal for this game.

The Lions move the ball but then we hold them to FGs - we have done this a lot this year.

However - do we play it more aggressively knowing the lions run game and Goff's accurate short passes play well into that type of defense.

Do we risk getting dominated on time of possession.

How should we defend this week?

Gotta pressure Goff. He’s good when he has time in the pocket. Make him scramble and throw in distress on the run.
Gibbs will get his yards as he works well in space but gotta stuff Montgomery at the LOS. Could be a long night if they both succeed.

Gotta stop Gibbs and Mongomery. And the pass rush has to get Goff to have happy feet. Do that and the lions are toast. The Lions are still good, but not nearly as good as the season Campbell gambled away their one legitimate shot at a Superbowl but not kicking a FG up by 14 and going up 3 scores. The next whiner possession, Purdy throws a pass that should have been picked but the DB bobbles it and Aiyuk reels it in. That was the beginning of the end.

To be fair, Goff was an assassin that day but the 3 failed 4th downs, Goff hit guys in their numbers and they dropped the ball.

Who was the dirty bastard who blew out Higbee’s knee? I want to see one of our TEs plant that guy early! Since then I have added the Lions to the teams I like to hate. I like Goff but hope he’s a jabbering wreck and seeing ghosts after this one! My biggest worry is not their offense, it’s the damn refs who have been consistently stiffing us every time we play another contender. That started vs the Lions in the playoffs when they blew obvious calls that would have changed the outcome!

Man, I hope we bury their season! Go Rams

The Lions will torch this secondary if Goff has time. So nothing has changed, we must get pressures early and often otherwise they have too many weapons for our back end to handle.

I think we can stop their run game, as long as Ford is healthy. But we can't have Goff all relaxed back there.

Lions defensively are in the same boat. Our offensive weapons are too much for their secondary if Stafford has time. And like the Rams front they're good at shutting down the run game.

IMO

Defense
1. Keep the blitzing to a minimum.
2. Make sure Forbes has help on deep routes.
3. Keep two LB's available to survey the TE's.
4. Contain Gibbs, not only on run plays, but watch him coming out of the back field.
5. Obvious passing downs, our DE's pin their ears back and rush full speed ahead.
6. Our CB's need to make tackles.... none of this pussy o'lay shit. Put a sting on the WR's

Offense
1. No TO's
2. Use the TE's.
3. Use Williams out of the back field and for screen plays. Aidan Hutchinson over pursues on every down and is a sucker on screen plays.
4. Stafford bootleg... Fake the handoff in one direction and roll in the opposite direction and dump it off to a TE or a RB. That will be there all day. If they try to stop it, it will be post pattern or deep out city with Adams or Nacua.
5. Goal is to achieve 100 yards on the ground.
6. Stafford 300 yards passing.
7. We will need 35 points.
 
How would I defend the Lions this week?

I would say, "don't be down on them.....they're a good team but were beat down by an excellent Rams team"
 
Get the Lions off the field so our O can do their thing. I am confident we will score a lot. Just a matter of how we contain the Lions O. They will have their moments. And Campbell will keep going for it on 4th down ... Slow down their run game and avoid explosives, don't miss tackles. Gibbs. Montgomery and St Brown are outstanding. Jameson Williams dangerous also.

QB pressure on Goff. He has a deadly accurate arm if he gets his feet set and throws with proper mechanics. Not so much so if hurried. If we play soft zones and don't get much pressure it will be death by a thousand 8-yard-gain cuts.

Mevis for game-winning FG as time expires?

I hope he doesn't have an accident on the field that re-aggravates the injury. Gosh, that would be unfortunate.

Pressure up the middle. Constant pressure. I'd stunt Verse and Young a lot. Gotta keep an eye on Gibbs, obviously, but ultimately, our corners and safeties are going to have to hold our own against St. Brown, Laporta, Williams, etc., because we're not getting through with just four/five men on that O-line.

As far as on the offense, defending against Hutchinson is the key. There's nobody in that secondary I fear, especially at corner. Pick on the weakest link, motion, do your thing.
 
I agree with Mojo. The offense has to come out scoring TDs right away so that their offense feels the pressure to score every time they have the ball. So that our D can play the type of D they do best. Bend but don't break. Stop the run like they have in all but one game. Pressure up front and keep everything in front of the DBs.
