AD is the QB of the Rams defense. The best QB of any defense in the league and he will likely be the best for the next 4-5 years. He is a rare bird that will challenge himself to improve every game of every year he plays - leading by example for all others. As such - the Rams need (and will) make him secure and keep him motivated. That will mean a contract that pays more $$$ per year and more guaranteed $$$ than whomever currently holds that honor. The only question is how much more.

I used to smoke that stuff.......

That’s why I quit.......

Aaron Donald may be the best player in the game but I don't believe the Rams should be paying QB money to a DT. Now that we have Suh, he can replace Donald. We all know that Goff will eventually get big $ and if we want to be able to afford to keep Peters, Cooks, Gurley and perhaps Joyner and Suh, I think we need to trade Aaron Donald. If I were Les Snead, I'd give Cleveland a call and offer them Donald for pics 4, 33 and 35. With the # 4 pick, they could get Wade his pass rusher, Bradley Chubb or if they wanted, they could probably turn around and trade the # 4 pick to Buffalo for pics 12 and 22. Cleveland has the money to pay Donald and Gregg Williams would be doing cartwheels to pair Myles Garrett with Aaron Donald.
Okj admittingly I just got home from the barr and drank 2+ plus 3-4 shots and I'm still not drunk enodjdk to think this is legit. spell check for the wii!

AD is so good that if the Rams don't get him signed and try to franchise tag him in 2019, don't be surprised if a team gives up 2 1s and signs him anyway. The Rams need to get AD signed this offseason. If they don't I'll consider this offseason a failure. He's way more important to this D than any players they have traded for in the last few weeks. I feel fairly confident they will get it done. But if not it will be a black eye for the Rams, and a bad sign that they can't retain the best player in the NFL.
The Rams would surely put the exclusive tag on him where he couldn’t negotiate with other teams.

I'm not a goff hater. Bought his jersey for my kid. But there seem to be 2-5 franchise qbs in every draft. A defender like AD is a lot more rare.

Goff might be great. Donald is great.

It's more likely than not that at least one of the qb's in this draft will make more career pro bowls than Goff. I doubt there is anyone in the draft who will make more career pro bowls than AD.

Goff was a big reason we won 11 games last year, but mostly because he played like a $20m qb for half that price. After 2020 he'll want to be a $30m/yr qb. If you are squeamish about paying AD his market value, just wait until Goff wants 15% of our salary cap.
Ill have to disagree with "2-5 franchise qb's every year", qbs are a rarity right now. I mean we just saw Cleveland give a 3rd for Tyrod Taylor, Broncos picked up Case, Cards grabbed Bradford and still half the teams dont have an answer at qb. If you wanna say there's that many qbs with franchise POTENTIAL coming out, then ill agree. But noone is a guaranteed franchise qb, regardless of how good you think their coach is able to coach. We played that game with Bradford.

Goff will also ask a lot of money if that's the culture we develop. Or we could go the Patriot route. If we start winning regularly, we set up the culture and have the upper hand on potential contracts.

If he wants to be among the highest paid players to include QBs, i.e. in that 25M+ range, the Rams need to move him. That is not something I am comfortable doing, no matter how much I love the dude in horns.

It is possible for any player to price themselves off a team. Even Aaron Donald.

Even the decayed body of the owner of the 1920 Redsox, who let Babe Ruth go to the Yankees, is screaming "NO! Not even I would do that!" from his grave.

Maybe we have a different definition of a "franchise qb". Mine is someone who starts 4+ seasons under a rookie contract or is signed to a second long term contract to be a starting qb. Seems like most drafts produce two or more of them (2013 didn't).

The first 2 words were "Aaron Donald". I'm sure you read further.
Truly man, I have never seen such a varied, large number of responses to an original post, where someone isn't kicked out or the thread being locked. I'm jealous, well done.

I don't think its ever happened where a team gave up 2 1s to sign a franchised player. With AD I think its more possible than it's ever been, but still unlikely. What about a young team with a good O, rookie QB (enough cap space), an OK D that could become a lot better with an improved DL and interior pass rush? Snead has set the blueprint for a team going all in. Couldn't his agent set the parameters for interested teams (i.e. the cost that the Rams won't agree to and maybe which teams he would be willing to play for)? All I'm trying to say is just because the Rams franchise him doesn't mean that another team wouldn't snatch AD from us. It could happen. They need to get AD signed this offseason.

Well no, another team cant snatch him up.
If they Franchise him with the "Exclusive" tag, he cant negotiate/sign with anyone else. I want him extended now as well, but if they have to Franchise him, he wont get "snatched up"

Did that change? I thought another team could sign a franchised player but would have to pay the current team 2 1s. Is that no longer the case?
