First day of training camp open to the public. There was a great turn out by the public. NBC reported that the attendance for day one was 10,000 fans. The weather was around 90 degrees with a slight breeze. I forgot my camera, but am planning on going either tomorrow or Tuesday. I will get pictures next time I go. As practice started, chants of LA RAMS would break out in certain sections. Chase Reynolds was already shagging punts when I arrived before practice. He occasionally ran close to the stands to big cheers. Here are my thoughts by position from what I observed. No pads today--Lets start with what we are all anxious about.

Qbs

Goff- positives
Goff looked like a first pick of the draft in individual drills. I wish it would have carried over to scrimmage.

First day of practice excuse-
It was very different once 7 on 7 started. Here is a short summary of his performance. He looked for the check down 90% of the time. I am hoping he was just building confidence. The one time he threw a post over the middle, it was picked - Big groan from the crowd followed by numerous "It is only the first day". During 11 on 11, it was not smooth. There were two bad snaps in shotgun (not Goff's fault). There was also a fumble under center (possibly Goff's fault). During 11 on 11, he continued to throw short. I am not sure he ever looked down field. Possible coach was telling him to look short. When they went back to 7 on 7 later in practice, Goff continued to throw short. Db began sitting on short routes and picked off Goff a second time.

As for Keenum- He looked like he did at the end of last year. He was efficient except for two passes that were batted down at line of scrimmage. He threw mainly short to medium passes. Second play of 7 on 7 he had Tavon open on a streak along the sideline. He over threw him. Keenum ran the first team, Goff was second team with occasional first team snaps. So who impressed today---- I would say Mannion. He got very few opportunities compared to Goff and Keenum. He made two great throws down the field today. Of course he was going against 2's or 3's, but made a good corner route throw and another up the crease for good gains.

Rbs

Gurley looked ready to start the season. Even without pads, he was fast, explosive, powerful, and changed direction effortlessly. Cunningham looked good as well.

Wrs

Hard to tell since the majority of throws were check downs to backs and TE. I will share more on them next time.

TE

Kendricks made a good catch going to the ground. Looks like he is ready to be number one. He better be looking over his shoulder for Tyler Higbee. He is big, fast, and has good hands. Looks like this may be a great draft pick.

OL

Hard to tell without pads. I did notice that Saffold was at RT.

Eric Kush was C on second team and had two bad snaps.

DEFENSE

DL

Hard to tell without pads, but looks to be the dominant force on this team again. I was pleasantly surprised to see Robert Quinn working out in individual drills. There has not been a lot of info about his recovery. He looked to bend well in drills with other DL. He did not look to be in pain at all. He did not participate in 11 on 11.

LBs

All seemed quick to the ball on short passes and check downs. 7 on 7 and 11 on 11 seemed to go quickly. Defense kept everything in front of them, got good pressure on qbs numerous times. I will concentrate on Ogletree more next time I go.

Dbs

Trumaine carries himself like a guy making 13 mil. He is very confident in how he carries himself. Not much thrown at him from what I could see. Dbs kept everything in front of them. Only gave up a seam pass for a decent gain. Cody Davis got one of the int. off of Goff. I could not make out who got the other int.

Practice Report 7/30: Day 1 in L.A.
Posted 1 hour ago

By Myles Simmons

The Rams got their first training camp back in Southern California started in front of over 10,000 loud and energetic fans on a sunny Saturday afternoon in Irvine.

Here are a few of the top storylines for July 30.

BRINGING THE ENERGY

There’s always a little extra juice for the first day of training camp. But given all the Rams have gone through since the end of the 2015 season, it’s easy to understand why the players would be hyped up to begin Saturday’s practice.

“We talked to the players about it last night — that there was a chance that there were going to be quite a few people here. And they were really excited,” head coach Jeff Fisher said. “As a matter of fact, we gathered them up right before we got started just to calm them down.

“When the atmosphere is the way it was, [with] the fans, and the support — there’s a tendency to go a little bit quicker earlier in practice than you should,” Fisher added. “And I just encouraged them to make sure they got warmed up and got to full speed so we didn’t have any issues.”

Once that happened, Los Angeles was able to get down to business. Fisher said he was pleased with the way Day 1 went, noting the players did well to stay in shape between the end of the offseason program and camp check-in.

“The [conditioning] tests were better than I’ve ever seen,” Fisher said.

Fisher said he thinks one reason the players started camp that way is because they developed a strong bond during OTAs. The uniqueness of the situation — where many players were living at the Oxnard facility — made the offseason program a little more like training camp. That in turn brought the team closer, and made players want to stick around the L.A. area to train together — despite the Rams not having their own facility during the interim period.

“As you know, we really didn’t have a place where they could work,” Fisher said. “They selected three of four facilities here in town, and they just stayed in town, and they just worked. And our conditioning tests reflected that.”

We’ll see how all that translates once games begin, but it doesn’t hurt to get off to a good start.

GOFF’S FIRST DAY

Rookie quarterback Jared Goff is known for being a particularly even-keel person. But on the day of his first training camp practice, even he felt some butterflies.

“A little bit, yeah,” Goff said. “It’s your first training camp practice — similar to my first rookie minicamp practice and my first OTA practice. And now [we’re] into training camp, and we’re starting the actual football season now, so it’s kind of the same feeling. You go out there and you kind of get the jitters out and get comfortable.”

Goff was one of the players who stayed in Southern California during the break, and Fisher said he could tell the Cal product made some good strides in that period.

“He spent a lot of time — as you would expect from him — in the book this summer, throwing to the receivers,” Fisher said. “He has a much better feel now than he did when he left.”

“I definitely feel 10-times more comfortable — much more comfortable with everything that we do,” Goff said.

As training camp goes along, Fisher said the most important thing for Goff is to make progress. It’s clichéd for a reason — the rookie needs to take strides and improve a bit each day.

“He gets the huddle, he gets his teammates — he gets that stuff,” Fisher said. “He understands what’s ahead. It’s just the reps and getting the experience. Completing balls and making decisions — and making mistakes.

“You can’t expect anybody to go through a mistake-free camp,” Fisher continued. “And he’s not going to either, particularly because, as you know, you learn from it. You need to experience those things. So you need to experience those things, and they’re OK right now.”

And for the even-keel Goff, that falls right in line for how he carries himself in the field and in the classroom.

“I think I just want to get comfortable,” Goff said of his camp goals. “Get ready to go, and get ready to play, and get ready to hopefully help this team as best I can.”

EXTRA POINTS

— Earlier this week, Los Angeles placed Rob Havenstein on the preseason physically unable to perform list with a foot injury. He’s able to come off it at any time before the regular season kicks in, but Fisher said it may be a little while before that happens.

“Rob’s had a little foot issue during the offseason, and he’s still not quite ready,” Fisher said. “So, [with] PUP — this situation can be week-to-week [or] day-to-day. Really don’t have much more information on it. But it’s going to be some time — maybe a few weeks before Rob gets back. He’s working very, very hard.”

— After an excused absence for the offseason program, safety T.J. McDonald is back for training camp. He said on Saturday he’s learned not to take anything for granted, especially when it comes to playing the game he loves. One of the toughest parts about the whole situation was not being able to improve with his teammates every day.

“Anybody who knows me knows how much I love ‘ball, so it was tough being away,” McDonald said. “But, I’m back now and I’m having a great time. Just trying to get better and hopefully will get in a good season this year.”

— Closing the book on Nick Foles, Fisher said the team and the player were able to come to an agreement that worked out well for both parties. L.A. released Foles earlier this week.

“It was a good situation for us and Nick,” Fisher said. “We’ve been talking to his people throughout the offseason and kind of felt like this was the direction we’re heading. And we got a good deal worked out so Nick has an opportunity to go on with his career, and we have an opportunity to move forward with some very talented young quarterbacks.”

— Finally, Fisher noted Los Angeles has placed running back Tre Mason on the Reserve/Did Not Report list.

“It was our only option,” Fisher said. “I haven’t personally spoken with Tre since the season ended — when we had the check-out physicals. I tried numerous times after the incident to reach him, and I was unsuccessful. Been communicating through the offseason with his agent, Bus Cook, had minimal conversation with family members. But Tre has made a decision not to communicate with us — not to talk, not talking to his teammates.

“Right now we’re more concerned with Tre Mason’s wellbeing than we are his football career,” Fisher continued. “We’re going to continue to try to reach him to see where he’s at. But right now, the best thing for us to do is to put him on a did not report list, so he does not count against our 90-man roster.”

Rams get warm welcome on first day of camp

By Jim Thomas

IRVINE, Calif. • Ray Khoury, 16, and his three football teammates from El Dorado High School were the first ones in line — 8:30 in the morning, or a mere seven hours before the start of Rams practice.

“My dad’s been a fan since they were in LA originally,” said Khoury, wearing Chris Long’s original jersey as a Ram, No. 72. “My dad always told me they were coming back. Growing up, he’d tell me don’t cheer for the Rams. We need them to lose. They’re not going to move a winning team back to LA.”

The Rams did their part in St. Louis, posting 12 consecutive non-winning seasons before NFL owners bowed to Stan Kroenke’s wallet and stadium plan, and approved the move back to Los Angeles after 21 seasons in the Midwest.

Khoury said he’s been hearing the “Rams are moving back” mantra from his dad for about six years.

“So when it actually happened, I was shocked,” Khoury said.

Turns out Dad was right. To the pain and chagrin of many in St. Louis, the Rams opened training camp Saturday at the University of California, Irvine.

Besides the El Dorado gang, there were about a dozen fans hanging out by the practice entrance by about 10 a.m., with more showing up as the morning went by. The gates to the practice fields — which are converted soccer fields — didn’t open until 2 p.m.

Few were as hyped up as Bobby Stephen, 53, of Huntington Beach. Wearing a Jack Youngblood jersey, Stephen was so excited, he sounded as if he were, oh, a little over-caffeinated.

“I couldn’t root for them when they moved to St. Louis,” Stephen said. “I just couldn’t root for them. When the Rams moved back here, oh man!”

Stephen said he has been watching tapes of old LA Rams games almost continuously since then.

“At home, every night. Till midnight,” said Stephen, who works for a direct mail marketing firm. “Just ask my kids. I’m all pumped.”

But he didn’t watch a second of the Rams’ Super Bowls in St. Louis, when they were known as the Greatest Show on Turf.

“I didn’t care,” Stephen said. “No. My boy called me Bandwagon Dad because when the Rams left I didn’t care.

Others did, like Fernando Gudino, 57, of Whittier.

“I’ve been a fan since Roman Gabriel, Deacon Jones,” said Gudino, a flooring subcontractor. “If you’re a fan, that’s your team. We have no control if an owner decides to take ’em (elsewhere).”

So Gudino, who came with his son Nathan, 19, said he felt for the fans in St. Louis.

“I do, I do,” he said. “Because you know, we went through it. In reality, the Rams were from Cleveland I believe. So we all know what it feels like. We have no control over it.”

Others weren’t so empathetic.

“Not really, they took them from us,” said one of the El Dorado High football players.

Others shouted, “The Rams are back! The Rams are back!” as the gates opened at 2 p.m. and hundreds of fans streamed out to the practice field bleachers.

Many wore “LA” Rams gear. There were a lot of Todd Gurley jerseys, with a few Marshall Faulks, Isaac Bruces, and Kurt Warners sprinkled in.

A souvenir stand just inside the gate even had a Torry Holt jersey for sale. The Warner jerseys had yet to arrive, said Jen Hertzberg of Legends Hospitality, a concessionaire service partly owned by Kroenke pal Jerry Jones, the Dallas Cowboys owner who helped get the Rams to LA.

At 3 p.m.. or a half hour before the start of practice, a roar went up when the first Rams player walked out on the field.

“Who’s No. 34?” wondered one fan.

It was Chase Reynolds, special teams ace.

When all was said and done, the Rams announced the attendance as 10,112. But over the last 45 minutes of practice, as the Rams moved to the other side of the practice field, what became the far side of bleachers emptied as fans left early. Anyone who has ever been to a Dodgers game has seen this happen.

Operating in a much bigger area than training camp at Earth City, there were concession stands behind one end zone, a first aid station, inflatables for the kids to crawl on, and rather oddly, an information tent to join the Inglewood, Calif., police department.

Behind the opposite end zone were VIP tents, including one for family and friends of players. And one for former Rams players. Among those in the player tent were former LA Rams quarterback Jim Everett, Hall of Fame offensive tackle Jackie Slater (who played one game for the St. Louis Rams in 1995), and quarterback Dave Barr (who suddenly is everywhere).

Yes, the same Dave Barr who scored the last Rams touchdown in the Dome at America’s Center at last week’s Legends of the Dome game. He lives and works in nearby Torrance.

“The whole event was a thrill, and what a way to cap it,” said Barr, referring to the Legends game and his TD.

Former defensive tackle D’Marco Farr was on hand, and so was fullback James “The Hammer” Hodgins, who coaches high school football in the San Francisco area. So was Hall of Fame running back Marshall Faulk, who was here working for the NFL Network.

There were no sightings of Kroenke, aka Malibu Stan. (He undoubtedly will be staying at his Malibu home more often now that the Rams are in California.)

Lucia Rodriguez, the daughter of late Rams owner Georgia Frontiere and brother of Chip Rosenbloom, was in attendance. She now goes by Lucia Rosenbloom.

While happy to see the Rams in California, she said, “I miss St. Louis, I really do. I feel for St. Louis.”

The largely boisterous crowd turned dark late in practice, when quarterback Jared Goff had problems with a center exchange and then threw an interception over the middle to safety Cody Davis.

On the first day of training camp for the LA Rams, the crowd booed Goff, the No. 1 overall draft pick.

“C’mon Goff, you’re in LA!” yelled one fan, a reminder that the fan base figures to be more fickle here than in St. Louis.

Starting right tackle Rob Havenstein was not at practice and may miss a few weeks. He’s on the physically unable to perform list while a fractured toe (from offseason conditioning) fully heals.

And no one in the Rams organization knows exactly what’s up with running back Tre’ Mason. Coach Jeff Fisher said he has been unable to contact Mason, who has had off-field issues, since the end of last season. Mason was placed on the reserve/did not report list Saturday.

But that didn’t dampen the day for Fisher or his team, which is back in California for the first time since 1994. After the Rams’ first practice back in LA, Fisher spoke to a media crowd only slightly larger than what was the norm for the first day of camp in St. Louis.

“It was great to come out of the locker room if you will and see the fans and see the stands full,” Fisher said. “We’ve got a lot of work to do. We’ve got a long way to go with this football team. The atmosphere’s certainly gonna help.

“We gathered (the players) up just before we got started, just to kind of calm them down. When the atmosphere’s the way it was and the environment, and the fans and the support, there’s that tendency to go a little bit more quicker earlier in practice than you should.

“I just encouraged them to make sure they got warmed up so we didn’t have any issues.”

Rams Head Coach Jeff Fisher – Training Camp Post-Practice – July 30, 2016

(Opening Remarks)

“Well, let me go back to the offseason program, OTAs. We finished very strong, in the staff’s opinion, with the OTAs. The thing that’s been impressive, thus far, is the work that they did between the OTAs and here reporting back to camp. As you know, we really didn’t have a place where they could work. They selected three or four facilities here in town and they just stayed in town and they just worked. Our conditioning test reflected that – the rookie test, in addition to the veteran condition test yesterday. The tests were better than I’ve ever seen. I think a lot of credit goes to the players, to their focus, to be able to put everything behind them and get focused in and preparing themselves for camp. We had a good first day, I can’t – we can’t – thank our hosts enough. UC Irvine has done a phenomenal job to have things up and rolling and ready for the players. It’s convenient; it’s an ideal spot to have training camp.

We made a few roster moves recently. Obviously, you saw the (Q
cool.gif
Nick Foles move – we thought it was important; it was a good situation for us and Nick. We’ve been talking to his people throughout the offseason and kind of felt like this was a direction that we’re heading and we got a good deal worked out, so Nick has an opportunity to go on with his career and we have an opportunity to move forward with some very talented young quarterbacks. I spoke personally to Nick and thanked him for his contribution last year and the way he handled himself through a difficult time from his career standpoint. I think he’s in a good place, as we are. We had to put (T) Rob Havenstein on PUP – Rob’s had a little foot issue during the offseason and he’s still not quite ready. So, PUP – this situation can be week-to-week, day-to-day. We really don’t have much more information on it, but it’s going to be some time, maybe a few weeks, before Rob gets back – he’s working very, very hard. We also placed (R
cool.gif
Tre Mason on a Did Not Report list. It was our only option – well, we had a couple options – but it was our only option. Just to give you the background, I haven’t personally spoken with Tre since the season ended, when we had the checkout physicals. I tried numerous times after the incident to reach him, and it was unsuccessful. I’ve been communicating through the offseason with his agent, Bus Cook. I’ve had minimal conversation with family members. But Tre has made a decision not to communicate with us, not to talk, not talking to his teammates. Right now, we’re more concerned about Tre Mason’s well-being than we are his football career. We’re going to continue to try to reach him to see where he’s at. Right now, the best the best thing for us to do is put him on the Did Not Report list, so he does not count against our 90-man roster. With that, does anybody have any questions?”

(On nervousness and anxiety for the first practice today)

“I was excited. I’ve been here since Sunday. We got here early, got things set-up, had many staff meetings – not only with coaching staff, but with administrative staff, just to make sure things were good. I was eagerly anticipating the arrival of the rookies. The rookies got here and we had two really good days with them. Our philosophy there is to get them on the field for a couple days, get their legs under them, get caught up before the vets come in because their reps kind of diminish at that point. But personally, I’m excited to get back. It was 1991 since I was on this campus. Trees are much taller, things look much different, but it’s certainly great to be back.”

(On the atmosphere at practice)

“It was great. We talked to the players about it last night – that there was a chance that there were going to be quite a few people here. They were really excited – as a matter of fact, we gathered them up before we got started, just to calm them down. When the atmosphere was the way it was and the environment and the fans and the support, there’s that tendency to go a little bit more quicker, earlier in practice than you should. I just encouraged them to make sure they got warmed up and got to full speed so we didn’t have any issues.”

(On RB Tre Mason being welcomed back to the team)

“I think there are some things we have to work through. I can’t comment on the legal issue and the arrest, because I don’t have any more information than you guys do – so that’s number one. And two, we’re going to have to delve into the reasons for the lack of communication at this point.”

(On QB Jared Goff)

“Jared was good today. We had some quarterback-center exchanges, and I’m not going to put it on (C Eric) Kush. But a couple of the snaps – it’s hard to catch a ball at your ankles and get up and throw it when you have rushers in your face. He was good, he’s really comfortable. He’s spent a lot of time, as you would expect from him, in the book this summer. Throwing to the receivers, he has a much better feel now than he did when he left. This is the first day, first day of installation. We just put some simple concepts in. Today, the ball wasn’t designed to go down the field – it was underneath, short passing game and those kind of things. But I thought he was good, he was much more comfortable now than he was when we left.”

(On what he would like to see from Goff in camp and preseason)

“Well, just continue the progression. Become more and more familiar. He gets the huddle, he gets his teammates, he gets that stuff, and he understands what’s ahead. It’s just the reps and getting experience and completing balls and making decisions – and making mistakes. You can’t expect anybody to go through a mistake-free camp and he’s not going to either. Particularly because you learn from them, you need to experience this. So there’s going to be mistakes and they’re okay right now.”

(On showing something by taking the time to work with receivers during down time)

“We’ve had them over time do it, but they made the commitment to each other to do it on their own, which was great. I remember back in when (Q
cool.gif
Sam (Bradford) brought receivers to Oklahoma for three or four days. They were here, they picked dates, times and locations and they worked out together and they threw. They all understood the importance of taking a break, so they took a break and they came back and worked some more. That’s how the league is right now – good players, good football teams commit themselves year-round to getting better.”

(On if it sank in anymore that the team is in Los Angeles)

“Yeah, it really did. Again, the set-up and all the preparation for today was a lot of hard work and we were involved in it. But it was great to come out of the locker room and see the fans and see the stands full – that’s real exciting. We’ve got a lot of work to do; we’ve got a long way to go with this football team. The atmosphere is certainly going to help us, it’s going to help them focus, help them to prepare and it’s exciting for them. Again, when I told them what we were anticipating and what I’m being told regarding next Saturday at the Coliseum, it’s different, and it’s very good for them.”

(On if there were any disappointments from today)

“I’ll go back and look at the tape. That’s our job – to find things, (saying) this guy needs to finish or this ball should have been caught and those kinds of things. But no, I think overall, with the exception of the football stuff that we’re going to do tonight and go back through the day, it’s great to get the first one under your belt. Now we have to go.”

(On if their condition can be attributed to something)

“I think it started with the offseason program in Oxnard. Particularly because it had a training camp environment to it. It wasn’t just guys were living at home and coming into work at the facilities, working out for a couple hours and leaving – they stay and on their off-days they work. They were running the sand, they were running the hills, and they were doing all these things together. I think that’s where it started. And then they, on their own, carried it through the summer, which is impressive. The rookie class was impressive, probably the best numbers out of any rookie class in our tests. And then the vets didn’t have any issue whatsoever in the test. It’s something that, the conditioning test, everybody does it… they go to sleep thinking about and wake up thinking about for about a week. It’s a little uncomfortable knowing you have to go do it, but once it’s done, it’s done – and they were happy to get back into football. But the numbers were outstanding.”

(On if his contract extension talks take a backseat at this point)

“Yeah, I’m not concerned about that. I’m planning on coaching here a long time, so I’m not concerned about that.”

(On the one or two things he would like to see from RB Todd Gurley in the preseason)

“You know, this is Todd’s first full offseason program, so that’s different for him. He’s in great shape right now. It’s a few carries here and there during the preseason games, he’s going to get his workload in practice, more so than he will in the games – that just makes sense to us. He’s going to build; his reps are going to build as we move throughout camp. He’ll get to the point where he’s simulating a six-or-eight-play drive. So his reps are going to increase and it’s just a matter of him being in the best shape he can possibly be to start the season.”

(On an element of Gurley’s game that he can improve upon from last year)

“What he did last year is hard to do, coming off the injury. Playing with the brace, not playing until Week 3, not having any real live contact until the Steelers defense lined up across from him. That’s not easy to do and he settled in and he was a difference maker for us in a lot of the games. He had the foot thing that was an issue at the end, but we specifically sat him in the final game because we didn’t want to set back his offseason program and we didn’t. He healed up well enough to participate in the Pro Bowl. And then from there on, he’s just been going, just going.”

Rams QB Jared Goff – Training Camp Post-Practice – July 30, 2016

(On putting in work with teammates between OTAs and training camp)

“It’s my job now, and I think myself and the rest of the 90 guys out here were doing a lot of work. I was just putting in a lot of work in the offseason and trying to get as ready as I could for today.”

(On how the first day of practice went)

“It was okay. There’s stuff that you always want to work on. I felt good about a lot of plays, there’s some plays you want back. I think that will be the way it is kind of for a long time, probably for the majority of everyone’s career. You go into practice, it’s not always the way you want it. In college, I’d go into college and try to be 100 percent every day. You’ll probably never do it, but you’re always striving to be really good. I’m always trying to improve, but at the same time there’s stuff today I’d like to have back, but you’ll get it back tomorrow, and the next day, and hopefully for the next 10-12 years.”

(On Head Coach Jeff Fisher having to calm the players down due to the large crowds and media attention)

“Maybe a little bit, yeah. Obviously, a lot of people out here, music was bumping, people were excited.”

(On if he had butterflies going into today)

“A little bit yeah, absolutely. My first training camp practice, similar to my first rookie minicamp practice and my first OTA practice, and now on to training camp. We’re starting the actual football season now, so it’s the same kind of feeling. You go out there and get the jitters out and get comfortable.”

(On how training camp was different from OTAs)

“I definitely feel 10 times more comfortable. Much more comfortable with everything that we do, as far as daily stuff. Just very comfortable on the field, much more comfortable. I’m excited, ready to go.”

(On the first preseason game in two weeks)

“I think that’s kind of what he was eluding to, the difference between OTAs and now is that we have to play pretty soon. It’s exciting. I think everyone is excited for it. It’s going to be our first game in the Coliseum, playing the Cowboys; it’s going to be an exciting game. It will be fun and a good experience for everyone.”

(On the atmosphere surrounding training camp as a rookie quarterback)

“Walking on the field was cool, seeing a lot of people out here, people yelling and screaming. It’s awesome to be back in L.A., and what looks to be a pretty big fan base that we have. For them to all be out here, I don’t know what the number was, probably was a lot. It’s really exciting for not only me, but for the whole team, and the whole city.”

(On difficulty comprehending the playbook and improvements from OTAs to now)

“Just continuing every day to get better, continue every day to look over it, say it over to myself, do a little mental visualization in my head, and continue to get as many reps off the field as I can, and on my own.”

(On if the playbook is the most important thing he wants to get out of camp)

“No, I think I’ve got a pretty good grasp of it at this point. I’ve got a pretty good understanding of it. There’s still obviously a lot of stuff I’m working on every day, but I think I just want to get comfortable and get ready to go, and get ready to play, and get ready help this team the best I can.”

(On getting to know your teammates)

“Oh yeah, we’re a very close team. They’ve all been really awesome with me and really cool, and I’ve enjoyed getting to know them. Can’t say enough about our quarterback room, what they’ve done and how awesome they’ve been so far, and the relationship I have with them is awesome.”

(On his relationship with QB Case Keenum)
“I didn’t know what to expect coming in and it’s been far and away more than I could’ve ever expected from somebody like him. The way he’s helped me, treated me, and brought me in, helped me with anything. If I got a question, I’ll go to him and he’s going to help me. You know, he’ll ask me little things to keep me on my toes, just stuff like that. He’s been really good and really helpful, and one of the best teammates I’ve ever had.”

Rams RB Todd Gurley – Training Camp Post-Practice – July 30, 2016

(On acclimating to the training camp atmosphere)

“It’s the first day, definitely just come out here and enjoy it. Obviously, it’s the first day, so everybody’s going to be tired – but that just comes with it. For the most part, just enjoy it.”

(On if the crowd size surprised him)

“No, I didn’t know it was going to be like that. (Head) Coach (Jeff Fisher) warned us that there were going to be a lot of people out here. So it was pretty cool just to have everybody come out.”

(On if this training camp feels better than last year’s considering he doesn’t have to go through all the same questions regarding his injury)

“No. it just feels good to just be able to be out here. First day (last year), I wasn’t doing anything – I probably wasn’t doing anything until the end of training camp. It just feels good to be able to be out here at practice.”

(On if there is any part of his rookie season that he’s looking to improve upon)

“A lot of things. Obviously I’ve been saying this every year, just anything without the ball, play-faking, pass protection, all types of stuff, my eyes, footwork, all that stuff. Just getting better every day, (Running backs coach (Skip Peete) always tells us to focus on one thing to get better at every day, so I just try to focus on that.”

(On if Coach Fisher has indicated that the run game will be a bigger part of the offense this season than it was last year)

“Obviously I know we’re going to run the ball. I’m a running back, so if you give me the ball, I’ll be happy. I’ll just come out here, work hard and whatever they call in the game, I’ll be happy with it.”

(On if he prefers this kind of practice with a lot of fans or a more quiet experience with just the team)

“It really doesn’t even matter. When you’re out there on the field, you know what you have to focus on and get better at. I was so tired today; I couldn’t even hear half the people. I was just focused on trying to get my wind back.”

(On how much more he was able to do this offseason)

“A lot more. I didn’t want to do too much because I didn’t want to be worn out for camp. But just making sure I had my cardio right, my legs right and just be ready to be able to take those carries in practice.”

(On QB Jared Goff’s development since OTAs)

“I didn’t even pay attention today, I was so tired (laughs).”

(On if he feels he needs to monitor his health and keeping his legs fresh through the season to potentially accommodate more carries monitoring his health and keeping his legs going into the season)

“It just comes with it. Like we were saying earlier the day before practice, this is the best our legs will feel all year. So, it all goes downhill from here. We’ve just got to try to maintain and just treat your body right.”

(On what he’s learned last year about maintaining good health throughout the season)

“Just making sure to use good nutrition, eating right. I feel like last year I did a pretty good job just as far as, cold tub, their recovery boots, and all that type of stuff.”

(On if a lot of people have recognized him here in Los Angeles)

“No, not really. Nobody really knows football players. I mean, I have gotten a lot of questions like, ‘Oh you’re that guy from the burger commercial!’ So, that’s my name now. I’m the guy from the burger commercial.”

(On his plans for the preseason in terms of how many reps he will take during the preseason)

“Obviously that’s Coach’s decision, you know. I’m here to play football. So you know, I’m not going to say no. Playing is playing to me. I don’t really care if it’s in the preseason or the regular season. It’s whatever, I don’t really care.”

(On if he can tell at this year’s training camp that his role is a more significant one compared to when he entered his rookie season)

“Yeah for sure, because, the guys were able to see what I was able to do last year. It helped out a lot. So just being able to take that role on and just being able to tell myself ‘Okay, if you do stuff good, the team is going to roll off that.’ If (Q
cool.gif
Case (Keenum) or Goff start throwing touchdowns, they’re going to feed off of that. So, just try to go out there and create as much energy for the whole offense.”

(On the offense’s mindset of trying to improve from last year)

“Just try to eliminate turnovers. Just try to have explosive plays, and you know, just basically that. We have explosive players and as long as we take care of the ball, that’s the number one thing. Go out there, and execute and convert on third down, and just do all the little things, just making sure we do that.”

(On what the key was to having so many explosive runs last year)

“You know, my teammates. My line, the receivers, tight ends, just everybody. Everybody being on the same page and, you know, definitely (WR) Tavon (Austin) helping around going around on those fakes, and speed. Just my teammates and us going out there and preparing every week, and just running hard.”

Huh? Can anybody else figure this out? They have some sort of Appalachian family tree thing going on?

Also let me know if you guys have any questions
Thanks to you and DrRam etc for all the reports.

My question is what % of the offensive plays are coming out of the shotgun vs under center?
I'm not a big fan of the offseason whispers about the offense going more towards a shotgun-based philosophy. IMO running Gurley regularly out of the shotgun is going to be a big mistake. Hoping to get some reports on this pretty simple question going forward from you guys.

One thing I'd like to point out is these complaints that Goff checked down. Go watch the video of Fisher's presser after practice. He stresses that today's focus in passing was the shorter and check down stuff. Quit freaking that Goff only checked down, thats what he was supposed to do!! I happened to watch some of NFLN and their "live camp day" all you saw Eli, ARod and many others doing was the same thing. First couple days of camp they were stressing the easy stuff of short routes and check downs. Calm down everybody and quit calling him captain checkdown :p

Exactly @OldSchool , And is not just for the QB's but the WR's and DB's etc... also. It helps in timing and comfort, avoids high speed collisions (no pads) helps to limit pulled and strained muscles.....It's just smart.

I made it to Camp yesterday. However, I don't have much to report. I chose to sit in the Bleachers on the North side of the 2 fields. Some positional drills were done on this side of the field but all of the 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 were on the far field. And, with the crowd being see large, it made it difficult to get up & move. I waited patiently for some of the scrimmaging to be moved back to the near field but it never happened.
A short list of things I noticed in no particular order:

- Quentin Coples is a big DE. However, I was surprised that he did not move gracefully like the other DE's. He kind of lumbers as he moves across the LOS. It made me understand better why maybe the Jets had him playing DE in their 3-4 system. But, this only a few positional drills. I will get to see go him against the O-line this coming week (Tues & Wed)
- DB positional drills happened in front of me. Lamarcus Joyner looks very quick in the drills compared to his teammates. Also, Mike Jordan is 6'0", 200lbs, good size and he has good hands.
- Punt returns: Bradley Marquez, Nelson Spruce and Pharoh Cooper really showed really good technique in catching punts. Tavon dropped one of his first attempts, but the wind had picked up and caused most of the issue.

During the following week I hope to see more 11-on-11 to see the offense operate. I want to be to specualte on the personnel groupings, formations, and tendancies for each as they work against the defense. I find this to be the most helpful while watching games during the regular season.

More reports to come......

One thing I am sure of: Fish and Greg Robinson are determined to expose Goff to every look a defense can throw at him. The kid is in for a rough first week while he adjusts to it.

Remember barring injuries this is possibly a top 5 defense and one of the most varied and unpredictable in the league. When the kid does get comfortable watch out!

Uggghh.... all the quotes of the LA fans who refused to cheer for the team all these years or even wish for them to lose.
Or the ones who have no sympathy for St Louis fans because we "took them".

It just flat out sucks reading that shit.
I hope the majority of fans that are able to show up are a lot cooler than the bandwagon fans they interviewed.
It's still hard swallowing my pride so I can continue to support my team.

I think it could be a simple divorce and she went back to using her maiden name.

I just want you to know as a Rams fan through two moves, that I respect you more than them. I still have trouble understanding geographical fans....
