I am just throwing this out there because I have not seen it mentioned recently.
There has been a lot of Von Miller discussion; and reference to the Rams trading second and third round draft choices for half a season and post-season.
Despite all their re-structures, the Rams were really tight against the cap at the time of the trade. Miller had $9.7M of salary due him for the remainder of 2021, post-trade. The Rams did not have the cap space. As part of the deal, Denver paid (and took the cap hit) for $9M out of that $9.7M. So Miller only counted for $722,000 of the Rams' cap this past season.
My best guess is that the Rams had to add one of those draft choices to make this cap-hit-arrangement, and finalize the trade. Whether it was the second or third round pick, who knows?
The Rams won the Super Bowl; and Miller was a huge contributor. The picks are the final selections in Rounds Two and Three (#64 and #96 overall). If Miller is priced-out of whatever the Rams budgeted to re-sign him, that budgeted number can (and will) be applied to another player(s).
I would like for the Rams to retain Von Miller but I am good with things as they are.
The Rams are Super Bowl Champions for just the 2nd-time in 56 years ... and I've been around for 52 of them.
Yeah, I'm good.
