Why was your guy Thomas playing LT & Noteboom left at RG ? Stanford almost got killed.

My point is what is Kevin Dotson’s worth ? Then what’s happening behind closed doors ? Plus it took 3 games before he played a down with The Rams.

I think they will be able to afford to keep Shelton, but I'm sure someone will over pay for Dotson. Or they will have to pay Dotson basically the same contract as Havenstein. This is why I've been saying that they may have to cut Havenstein and Noteboom if they want to pay Dotson. Cutting Havenstein and Noteboom as post June 1 transactions would give them about $21M in cap space. That would pay for Shelton and Dotson. That wouldn't be a bad tradeoff since at most Havenstein would only have one year on this team anyway. The same can be said for Noteboom. Then the Rams can simply tender Jackson and draft an OT to play RT this year and move to LT next year.

People mock me for saying they might have re-signed Bruss to look at as an OT this year in OTAs and TC, He was signed as an OT not OG this year. He was a very good RT in college. So are they looking at him as a swing OT this year and possible RT next year? If the Rams want to extend both Shelton and Dotson they will have to clear cap to do it. Both Havenstein and Noteboom are tying up a lot of cap space. Neither project beyond this year anyway.

This is why I posted about the Rams FAs waiting to see what their market value is. They will likely need at least $20+ M to extend both Dotson and Shelton. All I've been saying all along is that this will come down to numbers, i.e. how they want to allocate their cap dollars. Shelton and Dotson would give them stability inside for then next 4 years.

I must have written this badly. I think it's clear. It's definitely accurate.
However, three posters ... two good ones ... have questioned its accuracy.

Your lack of comprehension regarding the cap is a common issue, however your inability to understand when posters are correcting you is what is entirely frustrating.
The 15mill for Dotson and 9mill you suggest for Shelton could be the "approximate annual value" of their contracts (aka AAV) however that wont be the first year cap hit, in fact it will be a fraction of that. Each will likely contain a sizable signing bonus and low 1st year salary, where the larger cap hits will come at the back end of the deal, when the guaranteed money is gone and the team will have leverage with the player to either extend or be cut

Seems to me, when the Rams want to sign/re-sign a guy, they are very generous, like Demarcus deal. So I have to believe that they truly want those guys to get a clear understanding of the market value and then come to the table with a best offer. Being neither guy was a full time player until recently, you can understand (like many posters have suggested) the reluctance to offer top end full time player money.
At least I hope that's what this means.....

That is NOT how big-$ NFL contracts work. It's Not simple math,

Invest one minute and google "Elgton Jenkins contract"

27 year-old Right Guard (same as Dotson) signed a 4 year / $68M deal ... average $17M-per-year.

1st year cap hit ... Under $7M

I see the number $9M being thrown around for Shelton. Did he play anywhere close to that? No. I’d say $6M/yr would be the tops I’m looking at paying. Although it would force our draft hand there are 3-5 centers who could be starters.

The important thing to remember is the Rams have leverage here. Heck, in a pinch, they could even bring back Allen for a few games.

Dotson and Shelton are not the only fish in the sea. I would prefer they stay for continuity and the fact that they are known quantities but if they get too expensive then there still plenty of options to fill the voids.

If the McVay pixie dust value enhancement causes Shelton to become too expensive there are other centers that could be brought in that could actually be an upgrade. I think the one thing that makes Shelton valuable is he is great with calling out protections and his rapport with Stafford. His physicality can definitely be upgraded but the mental part is what really makes him valuable to the Rams.

I like Dotson but for the dollars he may command, I would prefer the Rams take that same $$ and invest long-term at Left tackle not right guard. If Tyron Smith hits the open market I would prefer the 15-20+ million dollars be spent on him. I know he is older but so was Whit when the Rams brought him in. Smith does have a bit of an injury history (more so than Whit had) but I think he is worth the small risk.

As for Boom, the Rams can keep him around for the first 4-5 days of free agency b4 they make that call. His 5 mil bonus does not kick in until the 18th so if the Rams should have a better feel for the OL FA landscape b4 making a move to cut him. The big name FA signings usually come in fast and early. If Dotson truly is at the top of the guard que then his value will proably be established pretty early on.

Also another thing to Note, the Rams essentailly took Dotson off of the the back-up scrape heap and turned him into a top FA guard so who is to say that they cannot do that again. It's not ideal to constanly rely on turning reclamation projects into quality starters but the Rams have shown it can be done. They did it with Dotson and to a lesser extent Corbett.

Note the Rams also have unkown quanties from thier own developmetal pool that could eventually become starter options like Shelton and Jackson have done. From that pool there is Zach Thomas, Warren McClendon Jr, Mike McCallister, Logan Bruss and AJ Accuri.

Final Note: The Rams are not cutting Havenstein!!​
