Reality: One (ONE!!!!) study of one (ONE!!!!!) cruise ship with only 217 people.

The Headline actually says, "
Up to 80% of COVID-19 Infections Are Asymptomatic, a New Case Report Says"

A case report is not a study - it doesn't pretend to be. Its a case report. A case report, by definition, doesn't have a sample size. Its a report of one case. In this context, the one case is the one cruise ship.

But most people don't, especially the "normies". Here's what people would see from the main MSN site:

You can see how "normies" would be click-baited into a case report of one ship of 217 people. And to it's credit, the article does say it's hard to extrapolate that small number into the general population, but that little blurb is near the bottom.

To a lesser degree

Standing outside to get into a Whole Foods - with a fucking mask mind you - and the guy ahead of me keeps turning around, I figured to ensure I was 6ft behind him. So the SB sun is scorching and I move into the shade - and I can see the guy getting nervy, but I’m now more than 6ft. So then some Korean lady exits the store and rams her grocery cart into my leg and I push it off me. Well that triggered the guy who starts to say “I wasn’t going to say anything” and proceeds to lecture me on my “social distancing.”
I just listened to him and when he was done I said “You got some firm thighs” and he snaps and runs to the front of the line to complain to the chick directing traffic. He told her I was sexually harassing him — It was pretty awesome.
What made it even better was that when we were in the store I saw him standing next to two other people in a skinny aisle debating which pesto sauce to get - oblivious to those standing 10 inches beside him

I'm all for social distancing and mask wearing, but people like that suck. You handled it perfectly, just make fun of them. I wish I could have seen it.

I would say that it is about what you should have expected for going to Whole Foods. I love Whole Foods, think the fresh food and meat are great, love the employees, etc.

But, at least at the 2 WFs in my area, 90% of the customers suck. I swear every shopper in there walks around with a constipated look on their face. That behavior is exactly what I would expect.

Yeah - that does look terribly misleading on the screenshot. When I clicked on the link I got a different look. Probably a browser thing or a mobile look or something. They do need to be more careful to make sure that the relevant info is right up front as our society pretty much only reads headlines these days.

There used to be one that lived in my neighborhood for years. Somebody raised it in their backyard... the damn thing outgrew the backyard and claimed our whole neighborhood as his territory. Nobody ever claimed him, but he never left the area.

I think a gator got him or something because he hasn't been seen in several years.

I actually miss his loud monkey sounds that he used to make.

Maybe so. Headline sensationalism is a problem, to be sure. Still, if you actually read what they actually wrote, its all true - its all valid - and its all important. Having said that, in the era where journalism is completely under fire, editors need to be very careful to avoid this kind of thing.

Yeah... they are very distinctive in their vocalizations. Super cool sounds.

That's a big reason I couldn't stop laughing when Paul pointed out that lady's blabbering in the video.

He would make calls at night that would freak people out that weren't familiar with peacocks. I would have fun with that and try and scare girls who would wonder what in the hell those sounds were. LOL. They make some crazy noises. I miss that fucker.

Here is a honest question:
surgical masks block particles that are as small as .2 microns
covid 19 particles are .1 microns or smaller.

How effective can surgical masks or homemade masks, really be against this? If this is true, then why are medical people pushing this? Is it a new opiate for the masses?

I do a lot of work inside hospitals, and I've had the opportunity to talk to quite a few doctors about this. The main issue behind everyone wearing masks is that people aren't even using them correctly. Specifically:

A) They're not fitted. If you have a beard, any mask (including a respirator) is basically useless.
B) When medical staff use masks, they don't touch them. And if they do, they're immediately replaced. People are out here touching everything, then touching their faces and adjusting their masks. Now it's basically an incubator instead of a mask.
C) Bandana or fabric masks? LMFAO. You already explained why that's a joke.

The ONLY (and this is a quote) legitimate reason to wear a mask is if you're caring for an infected person, and if you're of the age group (above 64) that is more susceptible to complications from a Covid infection. All of these people wearing masks are basically just using them to *feel* safer. They're not. All of the retailers who are enforcing a mask policy, are doing so because it limits liability in the event someone contracts the disease around the same time-frame they visited one of these establishments.

It's panic porn. Some people, it seems to me at least, NEED to feel like they're facing death head-on.

As is the case in many (most) things in this wonderful world of ours, perception is reality.

I was at a pharmacy yesterday with my wife getting her second shingles shot, and wore a mask, (mainly cuz I was at the pharmacy, which is generally populated with us old codgers). It's a VGK cloth mask, and I know it's basically useless.

Anyway, another ok boomer in a line of 5 people, out of nowhere looks at everyone, all masked, and starts with..."good for all of us - we need to band together against all these assholes running around grocery stores without protection...", and being in one of my more frequently occurring moods, I said "I'm wearing this to make you feel better - I don't think they do a damned thing."
I was expecting some blowback, but he was cool - said "It does, thanks." The end. Civility is alive and well.

(BTW - he had a cloth mask on as well. )
