Thank you everybody this thread was very funny reading. I feel for the people out of money but the blame the nfl for everything crowd is just comical. No matter what they did with this game people were going to blame the league.
The league should have seen this schedule and raised a few flags. A surprisingly rainy season in the area was obviously impossible to account for, but those two concerts in succession made for a difficult ask – one the crew in Mexico City couldn’t fulfill.

but the league and the city fell flat on its face.

I, for one, think it's shared responsibility. But the bulk of blame goes to the NFL.

The league couldn't predict the abnormally rainy season.

But they should have known (probably did) about the events leading up, and close to, the game.

Could they have negotiated (and paid for) exclusivity of the stadium for three weeks before the game to ensure a good playing surface? I'm gonna go out on a limb and say they could have (and should have).

Mexico City? They, obviously, allowed events (large events) to take place in direct succession of each other right up until close to the game date.

Had the NFL locked down the stadium, they couldn't do that. To me, MC saw opportunities to make lots of money and they (like the NFL) went for it. I guess I can see that rationale.

I don't think it would have taken a lot of forethought to avoid this... like I said, pay for a lock down three weeks before the game. The NFL probably tried to cheap their way into this... and it backfired.

Kind of sucks that they are wearing the color rush jerseys again... at least that is what Alden Gonzalez is reporting.

Would rather see the old blue and yellow

The NFL knows about the inconvenience put upon travelling fans too, and it’s the NFL who is going to go out of their way to take care of their fans - which they will - every fan’s greivence will be taken care of, through refunds, free tickets to premium venues, autographs, etc, the only people who care about you (fans that have been screwed by this) are Goodell and Co.

Certainly not the folks who run Azteca
FIFY... :ROFLMAO:

You should have received an email with a passcode to purchase presale tickets.

I was driving today and listening to a local sports talk show. This came up and that had a sound clip of a woman who works for ESPN in Mexico City and she explained.

The special hybrid turf was installed earlier in the year. It is supposed to be left to take root and grow for 11 days (I think) and it was not, there were events on it one day later. And it's the home field for two soccer teams.

When asked who was at fault here she said the blame was on the venue administration for not doing what they should have after installation and the wear and tear finally took it's toll.

So blame away on the NFL, but this isn't on them at all IMO.

The NFL is in full PR damage control mode - lets wait until this plays out. I don’t see how stiffing the fans for travel costs is in the best interest of the league. These owners are already coming off a ton of PR nightmares. Lets see what the official word is from the NFL before we go blue font

Rams will wear their Color Rush gear for Monday Night Football

The Los Angeles Rams will wear their “Color Rush” uniforms when they play the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday Night Football.

The Los Angeles Rams will not go the classic route when the host the Kansas City Chiefs in their first Monday Night Football game at the Coliseum since 1979. Instead, they will don the remarkably ugly and gimmicky “Color Rush” unis.
Can I get an ugh!

That said, it still doesn’t make it a good choice but I get it, as does the NFL when making a buck is possible.

It is disappointing that the Monday Night Football audience isn’t getting the classic gear Los Angeles wore in Week 10 when they played the Seattle Seahawks. With the Rams and Chiefs under the lights, those would have been a much better look than what “Color Rush” presents.

Still, it’s a look that running back and MVP candidate Todd Gurley likes. Since the disaster that was the 50 shades of blue against the Dallas Cowboys last season, even the all mustard look is begrudgingly better.

The Rams continue in this odd cycle of uniforms as the league has made it difficult for the LA brain-trust to do much else beyond the mix of classic, which the Los Angeles fan base likes, some of the look they wore when they were in St. Louis, and the “Color Rush” set.

Bottom line, the wait on new uniforms to coincide with the move to the Inglewood facility can’t get here soon enough, if for no other reason than the Rams and their unis is nothing more than a grab bag over 16 games. Hopefully by then, “Color Rush” will be nothing more than a distant memory.

This guy upset me with his color rush hatred. I luv the color rush! So, I looked him up and gave him some on his Twitter post. If any of you want to let him have it as well, here's Mr. Rivera's tweeter address:

Guess I have a couple concerns with this, @LesBaker .
First is... the report is coming from BSPN... a close second in selling their souls to the devil to make a buck, behind the NFL.
Second is... so, the NFL had no culpability in overseeing the ongoings of the stadium and field leading up to a week before the actual event? With all that was at stake? They just sit back and kept their eyes on everything but? Not buying it...

I don’t see how stiffing the fans for travel costs is in the best interest of the league.
Word's already coming out... NFL has no plans to reimburse any travel costs (saw an article today on Yahoo). I'm really surprised that anyone would defend the NFL when it comes to being miserly and not really caring about the fans. The history is there for all to see.

Yup... it's been about the almighty dollar for decades now. Sure, they do some good things (charities and all)... but most of their moves are made with making a nice profit in mind.

The impression I got from listening was that it was a cumulative effect over the months and the recent game and two concerts were the straw that broke the camels back so to speak. The real grass portion of the hybrid surface died over time because it wasn't allowed to properly root.

A few weeks ago the field may have been fine so the NFL monitoring stadium grass would have been a box that got checked. And I don't know that the NFL would do that since anyone would assume the stadium would caretake it's own facility. In this case they didn't and paid the price.

The NFL can't go in and take over a business. They signed a deal and I'm assuming they required a playable surface. They also require the home teams in these neutral field to make their stadium available in case of this kind of situation. The NFL can't tell a business, especially one outside of the country for crying out loud, how to do their business. All they can do is tell them they have a contract with said business and it requires X. If you cannot provide X our contract is voided and we won't do business with you. I'm failing to see what's so hard about this very simple concept is hard to understand. Azteca stadium isn't owned by the NFL, they tried to work together and the people that own/operate the stadium failed to live up to their end of the bargain and now we see the result. I get the distinct impression that no matter what the NFL did in this situation some people were going to fault them.

This isn’t Force Majeure
This is a decision by the NFL and the fact their diehard fans are getting screwed in travel is something I believe they will attempt to compensate - keep in mind thr NFL can’t force airlines or hotels or airbnb to refund but they can try and make ammends to those who have been put out financially cause of the change in venue. I still believe that there are discussions going on right now how best to compensate those who spent for travel - whether it’s equitable will be another discussion

And I wasn’t talking about profits and loses — my orignial point was that the NFL isn’t to blame here and if anyone cares it’s not the folks at Azteca but thr PR departments for the NFL.

I don't know about anyone else, but I never suggested the NFL could tell the stadium owners what to do.

What they CAN do... is... put in the contract that no events will be held there for the two weeks preceeding the game (isn't that how long the experts said it needed to "take hold"?)

At THAT point (which was a year - maybe years - ago), the NFL would know whether the stadium owners were willing to ensure proper field conditions for the game. Not this game of "pick a turf" and "events galore" leading up to one of the biggest events that stadium might have ever seen.

Yes, the NFL could have (read should have) been more forward-thinking when drawing up this contract you speak of.

They left themselves open to just what happened... and that's on them for not assessing and mitigating the risks.

I don't understand this defense of a league that has proven - time and time again - that all it cares about is the almighty dollar. Fans be damned.

Want proof? I'll give you all my ROD dollars if they come up with a plan to reimburse the fans that incurred travel expenses and are now screwed. I'll wait... and sleep... because they won't (reimburse)... because, despite the fact that the league (and it's Commish) make billions every year, they won't spend a dime on the hard working fans that ponied up the money to reserve a trip to MC for this game. And that's just a damned shame.

I can't... and won't defend that behavior. I love the Rams... but have little regard for the organization they happen to be associated with.
