Just a little cream on top as the Hags beat the 9ers!!! Tough stuff ahead...one of the toughest schedules in the league coming.

What would you guys say caused this to be close instead of a blowout?
1) another slow start, giving away a quarter of the game.
2) the chip shot FG that bonked off of the upright. Can you image how bad that kick would have looked if Karty kicked it from 40 yards out? That kick was ridiculously bad.
3) too many 3rd down misses.

Notice they are all offense related. The defense had its share of miscues, but they easily played well enough to win a game.

If the coaches could trust the pass coverage, matching it with man press coverage makes more sense with the Rams pass rush. But they can’t trust the coverage and teams continually through underneath and move the chains. I don’t think the coaches have much of a choice.
How much of this is simply McVay's preference?

When he hired Staley, it was reported that McVay wanted to put his fingerprints on the defense and intentionally went with a zone match defense. Since then, through Morris and now Shula, they've went with a zone defense on the back end that allows underneath stuff. The goal is to limit explosive plays.

They played this style even when they had Ramsey, although they sometimes allowed him to match up one on one. I think it's as much about McVay's preference as it is about the secondary talent.

Zone coverage is, by far, the most popular coverage in the NFL today.

When the Rams had the personnel to do it.. in the Super Bowl year, they would mix it in.
They absolutely, 100% do NOT have the talent to pull it off right now.

#1 offseason priority for the entire team, imo... position of most need.. AND.. the position that a major upgrade would impact the team the most.

Again, McClendon had a great game subbing in for the injured Havenstein (who got hurt in the second quarter of the Hags game, if I'm not mistaken) during the game when Havenstein went out. Noteboom never saw the field; it was McClendon who went in. And now he's had a good game here. I'm not saying that he's automatically starting over Havenstein, but I feel he's proven enough to be at least a good backup.
Yep, It's looking like we can add Mr. McClendon to the list of hits from the 2023 draft. So hopefully he continues to progress and play like he did today......

Missed the game, but I'm happy that our number of points scored is bigger than their number of points scored, so it's all good.

And I even heard that Noteboom didn't give up a single sack today!! Bonus!!!

Yeah, I guess I always look at the entire process of building a team. So while not ignoring this year, I am just realistic in that they have a few killer weaknesses/issues that will prevent them for doing much.

One issue was health that caused the 1-4 start that they are trying to overcome. The other is a weak CB group. A third is just their inexperience throughout the roster. Lastly, the lack of an explosive offensive player that opposing teams fear and have to gameplan for, and who could take pressure off of Nacua/Kupp.

So yeah, I am looking at the big picture and this season is just a peice of a 3 yr plan that started last year with the retooling after the 22' collapse.
I don't disagree with your take at all. But I do think that this defense is specifically built this season to complement a high-possession offense that can put up points, where the defense tees off on that opposing QB. So if and when that starts happening we may see this team finally arrive. You're probably right though that they're not gonna actually do anything in the playoffs.

That said I thought the same last season and we gave Detroit all they could handle at home. So I have learned not to underestimate this team. :laugh3:

@So Ram didn't tell us he was gonna be at the game!

Anybody think Fiske is just scrarching the surface? Guy is already an absolute terror. Much as I love Verse, nothing tops an interior disruptor on defense.
