Carson Wentz. Will they bring him back?

I think its pretty clear Wentz is a far better backup than the noodle arm backups McVay has had in his 7 years. He's got the arm make all the throws. Something guys like Wolford, Perkins and Rypien did not have. And he's mobile.

When Baker Mayfield was here last year it was obvious his goal was to find a starting job somewhere. It was just an audition for that. And he found a starting job. I don't think Wentz is in the same position. I'm thinking he'd gladly accept a backup job with a McVay led team.

The only downside would be the way he plays. If Stafford goes down for say, half a season, I'm not sure Wentz could last the way he always initiates contact when he runs. But for a couple games he could be good enough to win with.

Then there is another aspect of his game he could be used. He could be used in a role similar to Taysom Hill. In short yardage situations he could run the wildcat and have the option to run or pass. Defenses couldn't key on the run with a true quarterback.

The only question is, will they try to bring him back and what would it cost?

My guess is Stafford has 2 more years after this year. Next year is a Super Bowl or bust year for the Rams. I don’t see the Rams using their R1 selection on a QB this year. So do they back up Stafford next year with a R2/R3 developmental rookie QB or sign someone like Wentz to backup Stafford for the next 2 years and see if he could take over when Stafford decides to hang em up? I don’t see much of a market for Wentz as a starter next year but all it takes is one desperate team. One thing that adds value for Wentz is his ability to play wildcat. He can scramble, pass and get the tough 2-3 yard runs. I’d love him as a Rams weapon and a red zone option for Stafford. Maybe give him a $6m 2-year deal with some incentives?

I agree with this. The Rams are building a reputation as a great one year build you rep destination. Honestly, if the Rams see a QB of worth they will go for it.

But he isn't getting any starting jobs because of an "okay" game against the 49ers 2nd string.

No one wanted him this year - and they won't want him next year because he played in one meaningless game.

If we had any other back ups like we had ie. Wolford we would of lost that 49er game. Its ok to critique but give credit where due. Wentz did well enough and yes he will get another starting gig elsewhere…

If he comes back, maybe you put some short yardage packages in for him, kind of like Taysom Hill, but better since he can actually pass the football and run. Maybe that would interest him along with the fact that a 36 yr old QB can be more prone to injury, thus giving him an opportunity to start some games.

It seems like when we want someone in FA or resigning one of our own guys, we always try to get them "on the cheap." When I hear that, that means we won't keep him.

Rams won’t use a high pick to “develop” a QB. Les likes to get the most value out of his assets. Part of squeezing value out of picking a QB high is getting the cost controlled years. Why would they burn 2-3 of those years having the guy sit behind Stafford?

They’ll do what they always do. Take a flyer on a guy in the late rounds or UDFA and hope they found a gem. Rinse and repeat until they’re built for a young guy to take the reins completely.

If Wentz creates any sort of a market for himself then the Rams will let him go and just grab the next reclamation project for cheap.

That’s my take as well. Too small of a sample size to generate many suitors but like I said all it takes is one desperate team that doesn’t have a high draft pick to get a top 2-3 QB in the draft (Pitt? Den? Minn? ATL?).

He was on the street for like 10 weeks, right? I don't think he was invited to anyone's training camp. His people asked the Jets if they were interested and the Jets decided to stay with Zach Wilson.

I get it that fans overvalue the market value of their own players, so the fans' Wentz starter projections . . . they are what they are.

Donning the Captain Obvious cape, I'd say if the Rams want him back and he's willing to show the financial flexibility that reflects a desire to be back, he'll be back.

I hope he returns on the cheap but either way we're in good shape because this is two years in a row that McVay has done a quick turnaround on a reclamation QB whose name was shite. That increases the odds I think that the next guy to hit the scrap heap is ready to sign on. Maybe we can keep this going.

Would like to see them go find a backup level type in the draft at some point too but I get it if they don't manage to fit that in. Wanting to maximize Stafford's remaining window probably takes precedence and rightly so.

Sadly we're looking at Baker 2. McVay not only builds up future coaches but resurrects QBs too. Part of the legacy of the best HC in the league.
