Most teams carry a first and second string QB on their roster, right? That means there were at least 64 QBs that teams wanted on their roster before Wentz. That's a lot of QBs!

He had a decent game but I think he's got a lot more to prove before he's in the mix again.

I love how some think no one wanted him, like you actually know something about NFL circles. Wentz is accomplished and super rich. He was likely waiting for an opportunity that was actually worth taking, rather than risk injury at this point in his career, for what?

I can see him going to a team to be a place holder for one of the rookies.

I don’t think a starting gig is out of the question.
Mayfield wasn’t wanted last year either.

Flacco is another example of a QB nobody wanted.

Minshew kept the colts competitive this season for the most part. Even though he started as a back up.

It's not solely the Ram's decision to make in terms of Wentz returning. Ultimately Carson decides to make in the same way it was Baker's.

I think it's probably 50/50 if Carson gets offers. If he's a starter it will be as a 1-2 year bridge because with this deep QB draft most needy teams will draft a QB. IMO Wentz is looking for one more big starting contract. I don't think he will get that so it depends upon whether he wants to sit as a backup for one more year. One way to look at it is that it's better than unemployment. His market IMO hasn't changed since he signed. His value right now is as a quality backup and that is his reality.

If the Rams draft their next #1QB this year they won't need a backup.

Wentz will most likely get a starting gig somewhere. That's why he signed with the Rams. He saw what McVay did for Mayfield. Could even see him signing with the Seahawks depending who they bring in.
Where though? Chicago, with Fields and the #1 pick? New England needs a QB....will probably draft one of the top 3 with the #3 pick. Atlanta needs a QB.....depends on who gets the HC gig but they have the #8 pick. Minnesota if Cousins exits. #11 pick. Denver if Russell is gone? #12 pick. Las Vegas? #13 pick. Pittsburgh? Just the #23 pick. But where will Cousins and Russell end up? I could see Cousins resigning with the Vikings and Wilson in Las Vegas. I don't see Tomlin signing Wentz though. I could see Las Vegas signing him unless they get Wilson or Cousins. Or Payton in Denver. Seemingly a lot of possible destinations but 4 or 5 QBs in the draft, a free agent and a guy on the trade block. There were a lot of teams in need of a QB during the year this year and Wentz was still on the couch until the Rams got him. Too far off anyway.

I wrote a thread about this already. Bring him back and utilize him starting this week as a RPO at the goal line and in short yardage situations. He is stronger than Stafford and is better at QB sneaks. They can roll him out and he can run or pass. Lets go.

He threw for 163 yards and only faced starters part of the game. I don’t think his performance was that impressive. But, I’m happy to have him as a backup.
Sadly we're looking at Baker 2. McVay not only builds up future coaches but resurrects QBs too. Part of the legacy of the best HC in the league.
Baker looked better than Wentz in his short Rams stint

The Jets didn’t even want him. Every team has scouts every player. McVay went with Rypien over Wentz.

If I'm Wentz, I'm taking backup money here in LA and trying to get a shot as a starting QB after Stafford retires either 2025/2026. This is one of the most QB friendly jobs in the league and he knows it. He'll still be 33/34 years old at that point, plenty of time for one more stage of his career and the chance to go out on top.

The alternative is a shot as a bridge QB with a shit team, risking further injury, and going out on a low note.

I'm pretty sure Wentz's agent will be looking for the most money. And I doubt he realistically expects to be a starter with whoever he signs. But his performance last week will likely have the attention of the teams looking for a backup. I doubt the Rams will be the only ones to offer him a contract.

I just hope they realize how important a decent backup is. One with experience. We got lucky with certain teams losing and putting us in the playoffs early. That game Stafford sat out coulda cost us a playoff spot. We need someone better than what they've had behind Stafford.

yeah but Mayfield played in 5 games against starters - not 1 game semi preseason game against 2nd stringers.

Wentz as QB2 next couple of seasons would be a great get for the Rams, but will he sign for back up money

Yeah I agree with this. He is rebuilding his brand with NFL teams so he should be careful to not immediately price himself into a situation where they elect to cut his ass. Teams willing to throw extra cash at him for a bridge role in FA can quickly change as they ask themselves "if we're gonna lose why not start the rook" and once you get there it can become "why not just cut this vet and save a little cap space."

If he's learning and enjoying himself with the Rams signing with them at a fair rate has a lot of advantages. It spares them from feeling like they need to take a shot on a backup midrounds. And it allows him to build his game and show well in preseason and maybe end up being traded into a good situation or replacing Stafford if things go really well. Key is improving which should be a given with this staff. Jumping for the most money that's not always going to be the case.

For him to get a starter job, it will have to be a "bridge" situation.. or a competition situation.

I don't see many of those options out there for him. He was fine in the 9ers game.. but how many games will he last carrying the ball like that? And that was a huge reason they won.

Very true.
However, Wentz has had success in the league.
There aren’t 32 QBs better than he is.
30 maybe, haha

I personally would be pleased if the Rams kept Wentz as Staffords backup next season and use a middle round pick on a QB to develop. After 2024 will be the season to add a top tier QB through the draft or a trade.

Wentz is good enough to step in and win games for you. If we had just some random QB, we don't win that game against the 9ers.

I lost credibility for stating a fact?

The Rams could have had Wentz earlier this year They signed Rypien instead.
You know that for sure?
Do you know if Wentz, at that point, wasn't still hoping for a starter to go down and possibly start the rest of the season?

You don't.
