Kupp isn’t a burner tho. If he wants to be a starter, he has to be there to contest. Not an excuse.
I was actually just watching some kupp rookie highlights. He isn't a burner but he does get deep pretty well. Nobody in our offense got deep last year because it wasn't designed to play that way

Kupp is one of the best in the league at getting open despite not being a burner. The clip starts half way through the play, we don't anything about routes or coverage.

Again there's not many safety's that could hang with Kupp.

Day 6, first practice in pads. Stafford looks to be OK. He's out there throwing the ball.

Whitworth and Terrell Lewis not suited up.

Will be a short report. Family demands for my time tonight.

Lots of special teams work today, Jerimiah Heydel, Landen Akers, Ray Calias, Jake Funk, Otis Anderson all fielded kickoffs and punts. New guy Bojorquez didn't impress, punting short and out of bounds. Hekker kicking deep with a spiral. Heydel and Calais leading IMHO.

I kept an eye on Brycyn Hopkins today. in 11 on 11's he was with the 2nd team and had two targets dropped one and Wolford threw one over his head. Did nothing to impress today. No plays with the first team.

Aleric Jackson at LT for 2nd team OL, T Anchrum at RT for 2nd team. Didn't see Jamal Demby at all today. NoteBoom at LT with ones. Jordan Merideth played some at LG with twos, Shelton at RG with twos Brewer at LG with Twos. Max Pircher got a couple snaps in at LG. allen got snaps in with 1st team.

Here's some notable plays from 11 on 11

DS Jax deep pas from Stafford for a TD
Kupp gets TD from Stafford
Higbee with lot of targets
Kupp with a TD,
Scott with a pick
Jones with a nice pass breakup
Jefferson with a great move to fake out Ramsey, Ramsey gets pissed. Jefferson really looking good all6 days.

Doing hurry up O. this session they did better than yesterday.

Matt Gay nailing long FG's.

Mixing up offensive and defense kicking lines with a lot of different people.

Corbett holding his own vs SJD, AShawn and Donald. ( of course AD is holding back)

Was nice to see Aleric Jackson at LT. He did well

Towards the end, they put Shelton in at Center and he botched all three snaps.

Koski had a good day even beating Ramsey for a nice play.

Harris got in and got a pass from Stafford.

Another very good practice. Stafford didn;t look his best. Overthrew several times, but mostly got the ball out just fine. thumb doesn;t look to be an issue.

My standout players for today Jefferson, Koski, Scott and big guy Aleric Jackson for holding up very well vs D 1st team.

OK. Will be at TC tomorrow.

Re: Rapp if you load up some tape of him in 2018 in Wade's defense he covers reasonably well in man. He just has zero instincts in zone IMO. Or maybe I'm being mean there. He lacks some instincts in zone compared to guys like say Fuller. And since Burgess played a good amount of two high in college the writing is sort of on the wall with that other safety spot.

This is why I keep saying Rapp should be at WILB. He can man up occasionally but he's best served shooting gaps downhill at the run action. He is an exceptional tackler with a great feel for angles in tackling. So I think he'd outperform the ILBs they've been putting there.

Tbh they should cut Demby. Anchrum is probably gonna slide ahead of him if he's not already ahead of him. The guy could use that extra time to try to find another depth role somewhere, at least a look.

I like them playing Pircher at LG. They can not mess with his feet that way if they want to work him at LT this year and try to turn him into a lottery ticket. But inside he might get comfortable quicker of course. Just a good approach there IMO.

Sounds like Corbs is killin it so far this year. If that's true I expect the Rams to try to lock him up, who knows maybe he'll opt for some security and the right situation for a year or two.

He was better than Josh Reynolds last season. Mcvay sort of F’d up ? Then again Van Jefferson is better for it.

His route running is excellent. The Rams depth a WR is as good as it has ever BEN(Skow). DJ1 is only going to open things up even more.
Harris’s at TE is just going to add to the WR group. If you were wondering about a FB I really haven’t seen it ?

Tutu who ? He made his decision & is missing quality training camp.He seems lost after listening to his interview. Lucky he didn’t effect other players. I really don’t know the whole situation, but seeing Matthew Stafford on the field with The 1’s only shows how important it is to be getting these practice Reps!!!
Sorry I must have missed it. What decision did Tutu make?

taylor rapp, in my opinion, won't make the team next year...

too slow. late to the tackle... alec ogletree rewind..

that's not fair... ogletree whiffed continuously, and would always arrive late for a "pile on'.."

rapp just doesn't have "it"..

i know he had a pretty good season a couple of years ago, but that was the same season i saw a few shortcomings, and to me they were glaring..

my bar buddies lambasted me last year when i told them rapp is over rated...

we'll see..

I think if we were running Wade's defense Rapp would be outstanding. That's the prob. He was drafted for a different defense IMO.

All that aside he may adjust to this scheme and kick ass. Who knows. But I think he's gonna be one of those casualties of the scheme change.

Sorry I must have missed it. What decision did Tutu make?

Time missed & keeping safe. I guess I missed why he is out all of training camp this year.

Van Jefferson dad is a WR coach & Van played for 2 top SEC teams & is pretty mature when he came into The NFL in 2020. Now thinking back he didn’t have the amount of time to catch up with no preseason games & might have been even a bigger factor.
He had to earn his playing time as a rookie & now The Rams have DJ1 as well.
Just saying Tutu is still not in camp & it’s not a common injury of why he is out.He could have kept himself out of harms way ?
My point though right now is good luck getting playing time. Now if he is that good as a PR he could makes a name for himself.

Was Donte Hall the Rams PR one season ? Who ever that KC PR was way back is a good example of a small WR that was just a specialist. If he can be a game changer on talent alone then there is something there.

Anyway will see. I’m just a big fan of Van Jefferson as a Ram.He just such a solid young WR & does the right things. He route running is still improving, especially working with 3 of THE BEST in The NFL.

Sorry Tutu is missing out on such a Great opportunity for his young career.I just know why he is not there was preventable. We all have our Freedom of Choice.I don’t know about you or why he is not with The Rams in depth.I will just say I think he made the wrong choice.Even if I’m a 1,000% wrong it’s IMO of mind & it doesn’t really matter. Tutu not at camp does & he can’t get that time missed & experience back.

I don’t think he was criticizing Kupp as much as Rapps need to show he can make up ground on WRs. I could be wrong but that’s how I read it.

There's a spot for Rapp on this team in certain packages. He has good instincts, is a solid tackler, matches up well with TEs in man coverage, and is a solid blitzer iirc. However, I don't see him filling out to be a linebacker and Burgess is probably a better fit at safety in this defense so it's difficult to say what his long term position would be exactly.

Glad to hear that SJD finally figured out he needed to work on his pass rush. But his run defense sucked last year and he needs work on that too. He always looks good until it's a real game so I'm not going to get worked up about it. Besides he's a FA next year so he probably makes the roster this year as Snead loves his comp picks. If they can get a 4th or 5th round comp for him that would be great.

Rapp looked great as a rookie because Phillip's scheme was similar to what he played in UW. Staley's schemes and his injury slowed him last year. I expect Morris to use a lot of cover 3 so it will go back to Rapp's comfort level.

Re: RBs I think we will see more rotation among Jones, Funk, and Calais. I also think they will carry 4 on the roster with Anderson probably making the PS. I think if Henderson goes down, Funk will take up the slack as his speed allows McVay to play his normal offense. With Jones, the emphasis on running will have to be more inside oriented. The problem with Jones running inside is he was not a tackle breaker in college.

I see them carrying 6 WRs: Woods, Kupp, Jefferson, Jackson, Tutu, and Skowronek with Trishon making the PS. Once Jackson is off the roster it opens a spot for Trishon next year. IMO Skowronek has shown he's better than most people thought. I liked him because what I saw in Benny was something that was a hole in their offense. Skowronek is a true possession type receiver who makes those short to medium-range contested catches. This gives him a definite role in their red zone where they struggled. He's also faster and quicker than most give him credit for.

The only downside so far this year is Rochell's injury. I really think he would have finished the season as the true #3 CB. He still might if he isn't out too long. Wrists are tricky because of all the nerves which can impact your hand.

The only part of the team really in question IMO are STs. Not so much the kickers but the coverage teams which were a huge weakness. Otherwise, I'm happy with what I'm hearing.

Just go back and look at SJD's game film. He gets blown off the LOS, isn't stout at the POA and his sacks are all coverage sacks setup by the rush around him. He struggles to get off blocks as well. Yeah that's the guy I'm talking about. Yet every year it's all about how good he is. Lets see if they extend him now that Robinson is looking quicker and in better condition. Also, remember they drafted Bobby Brown to play 1T. SJD lacks the speed and quickness to anywhere but DT. With Robinson, Gaines and now Bobby Brown with both Gaines and Robinson who can also play 3T SJD's push for a job would look to be too little too late. Though he probably would get interest from other teams as a FA where Snead will get his comp pick.

IMO SJD falls into that category of good enough isn't good enough anymore. Also, Robinson is signed through 2022 and is clearly the better player. All of which would seem to point to SDJ not being extended next year. Also, if they wanted, SJD only carries a dead cap of less than $39K meaning they would clear $2.1M this year if he's released.

Rapp: always felt he’s better in the box or closer to the LOS. He’s a good tackler in support (pretty much every Safety drafted lately is).

Jefferson: gonna get every opportunity to shine. I hope he turns out to be a star because I felt Reynolds was a solid non-starter and too much maligned on this forum.

DJ: with no true #1 on this offense, the defenses will have to pick their poison. I don’t see how a defense can shut down DJ without getting carved up by the other options.

Noteboom: this is his year to turn the corner. I always felt he was much better at LT than on the interior. He should get real game reps this year. It just doesn’t make sense to try and get every snap outta Whitworth during, what should hopefully be, a long season.

10 Observations from Day 6 of 2021 Rams Training Camp

IRVINE, Calif. – Tuesday marked players' first day in pads at 2021 Rams Training Camp presented by UNIFY Financial Credit Union, with quarterback Matthew Stafford logging a full workload despite a contusion on his right thumb and rookie linebacker Ernest Jones and third-year safety Nick Scott stepping up to make big plays for Los Angeles' defense.

Staff writer Stu Jackson shares 10 Observations from the session:

1) No limitations for Stafford: The Rams' signal-caller sustained a contusion on his right thumb toward the end of Monday's practice, but on Tuesday, he managed to take on a full workload.

2) Scott steps up: During one segment of 11-on-11 team drills, Scott jumped in front of a Stafford pass over the middle intended for Woods to snag an interception that drew high praise from Stafford afterward. "That was as good a play as I've been around at the safety spot," Stafford said in his post-practice press conference.

3) Jones in coverage: The rookie linebacker disrupted a pair of Stafford passes in impressive ways. On one occasion, he covered tight end Tyler Higbee so well he forced Stafford to throw wide. Later on, he tipped another Stafford pass intended for Higbee, but Higbee was in close enough proximity to haul in the deflection.

4) Stafford connects with DeSean Jackson again: Stafford continues to take advantage of the veteran wide receiver's speed, launching a deep ball over the bill to Jackson for a touchdown against the second-team defense. As was the case on another of these connections, Jackson's speed was displayed again, with a good amount of distance between him and the last defender.

5) Kupp connection: Stafford also used terrific ball placement to find wide receiver Cooper Kupp during team drills, with Kupp making an over-the-shoulder grab to haul the pass in.

6) Valuable day for fourth-year offensive tackle Joe Noteboom: With Andrew Whitworth getting a veteran rest day, Noteboom received those reps at left tackle during Tuesday's practice.

7) Darrell Henderson Jr.'s burst: The third-year running back had a nice moment during team drills where he broke outside, then cut back toward the middle for what would've been a first-down run.

8) Watching other running backs: Second-year running back Xavier Jones and rookie running back Jake Funk each got a chance to display their reliability as receivers. Jones connected with Stafford on a short pass during team drills, then showed good burst on the cut going up field. During the same session, Funk caught a short pass over the middle from Wolford with a similar display of agility and explosiveness.

9) Other defensive back stops: Besides Scott, fellow safety Jordan Fuller made an impressive pass breakup during team drills, while cornerback Dont'e Deayon had one on a Stafford pass attempt intended for Van Jefferson during the same period.

10) Other linebackers in coverage: Troy Reeder and Kenny Young also registered pass breakups on Tuesday; Reeder on a Stafford pass intended for Henderson, Young on a John Wolford pass intended for wide receiver J.J. Koski.
