It's always that one Colts game that people reference. Are there any other examples of how great he can be, or did he just get lucky that one time?
For what it's worth, I'm sure GRob had one single game where he did a great job blocking the whole game. And he's huge, strong, whatever else. His physical talent was why almost everyone thought he would at least be an all pro guard.
In both cases in turns out you have to be good at football too.
The Colts game served as an object lesson for both the Colts & the rest of the NFL on how not! to play Tavon. When you go against a guy with Warp 5 speed and quickness (e.g., Gale Sayers, Barry Sanders, Terry & Eric Metcalf, etc.), you simply cannot! play him 1-on-1. You surround with as many bodies as you can spare to prevent him from killing you virtually all by his lonesome or, even worst, by having his damn teammates get in the way of having your defenders grabbing him with their [Tavon's teammates'] blocking/screening abilities.
Before the Colts game, all the NFL DCs in that first season played Tavon the way they played Gale, Barry, and the Metcalf father/son duo. After the Colts demonstrated the futility of 1-on-1 play against such an electric weapon, everyone reverted back to the old formula and flooded him with as many available defenders as possible.
I was hoping that Sammy & Jared coming together to stretch the field even more vertically, along with the threats from Todd, Robert, Cooper Kupp, our young TEs and all, would allow Tavon even more opportunities to get more 1-on-1 time. However, that crazy megabucks contract from the Fisher regime killed that possibility.
