Locks:

QB: 2 (Stafford and backup)
RB: 2 (Akers and Hendo)
WR: 5 (Kupp/Woods/Jefferson/Jackson/Tutu)
TE: 2 (Higbee/Harris)
OL: 7 (Whit/Edwards/Corbett/Evans/Hav/Noteboom/Anchrum)
DL: 6 (AD/SJD/ARob/Gaines/Brown/Brown)
EDGE: 3 (Floyd/Hollins/Lewis)
ILB: 2 (Jones/Kiser)
CB: 3 (Ramsey/DWill/Rochelle)
S: 3 (Fuller/Rapp/Burgess)
ST: 3

Likely:

RB: 1 - Jones or Calais
TE: 2 - Hopkins and Mundt
OL: 1 - Shelton
EDGE: 1 - Obo
ILB: 2 - Howard, Reeder or Young
CB: 1 - Long
S: 1 - Scott

Fighting for their jobs:

Allen, Brewer, Jones or Calais, Howard, Reeder or Young

If you add the locks with the likely, you get 47 players - that leaves 6 spots for the practice squad, 7th round picks, UDFAs and the group fighting for their jobs.

I'm sure we will see some "IR" guys from this group, and some will be put on the practice squad - but one reason I wanted to do this is because of the Funk and Skowronek picks - if there guys are healthy there are definitely spots for them because of special teams value.

But this team is getting DEEP and I love it.

Also, the Rams currently only have 3 (THREE!) players over 30 years old

Good summary.

The Rams have the cap space to add a couple veteran free agents.

Not deep enough at CB for my taste. No way they go into training camp with just 5 on the roster. They must have a veteran and another player in mind to come in and compete.

Snead seemed to talk up Brewer a lot, keeps mentioning the game he played back in 2019. Unless something weird happens, I expect Brewer to make it and possibly steal some reps from a starter in TC.

I think that comes down to whether Burgess wins that slot spot. If he takes the slot job we're in great shape IMO. If not, then yeah maybe we see a guy like Deayon/Long sneak onto the roster.

I agree for training camp - however last season we only kept four on the roster. So for the regular season, having Ramsey/Williams/Long/Rochelle/Deayon is more than enough.

Much agreed. I’d add Anchrum as likely and release Young to help with some FA pickups at CB/EDGE.

I guess I don't get this. Active roster is 46-48. Actual roster is 53 but can be 55 if you are bringing someone up from the PS. PS is 12.

Is the 47 supposed to be 57?

Totally agree here, need to add a veteran, however, Troy Warner from BYU played both CB & Safety.

Here's my take on our roster/practice squad.

QB - Matthew Stafford, Bryce Perkins.

(The first shocker. Yeah, I think Perkins earns the backup job for this team; he can play special teams, he's fast, and I think his throwing motion will have improved.)

RB - Cam Akers, Darrell Henderson, Xavier Jones, Jake Funk.

(Akers and Henderson should have the lion's share of the carries, barring injuries. Jones and Funk will be on special teams.)

TE - Tyler Higbee, Jacob Harris, Brycen Hopkins, Ben Skowronek (FB/HB/TE/WR).

(The next - somewhat - shocker: Mundt is cut. Honestly, I think Skowronek is a better version of Mundt and could eventually be used as the all-purpose weapon we wished Sam Rogers would turn into.)

WR - Robert Woods, Cooper Kupp, Van Jefferson, Desean Jackson, Chatavius Atwell, Jeremiah Haydel

(Woods, Kupp, and Jefferson should start, especially if Jackson gets hurt. Atwell gets a couple of reps this season, while Haydel is talented, insanely fast and quick, and can return punts and kicks.)

OL - Andrew Whitworth, David Edwards, Austin Corbett, Bobby Evans, Rob Havenstein, Chandler Brewer, Tremayne Anchrum, Joseph Noteboom, Alaric Jackson.

(The starters aren't much of a surprise; I think Corbett is a much better option at center than Allen or Shelton. I think Jackson makes the team. Brewer is the swing tackle, Anchrum is the interior backup, and Noteboom is there in case Whit falters.)

DL - Aaron Donald, A'Shawn Robinson, Sebastian Joseph-Day, Greg Gaines, Bobby Brown III, Earnest Brown IV.

(AD is AD. SJD, Robinson, and Gaines form the rest of the vet core. BB3 and EB4 will take the remaining two slots.)

LB - Leonard Floyd, Kenny Young, Ernest Jones, Justin Hollins, Terrell Lewis, Ogbonnia Okoronkwo, Micah Kiser, Travin Howard, Christian Rozeboom.

(Honestly, I think Jones has the best chance out of all of the rookies to start, and if he's alongside Young (and if Young isn't cut for cap purposes), I think he could very well thrive. Floyd and Hollins are the starters, but keep an eye on Terrell Lewis; I think he breaks out this year. Kiser and Howard are solid backups/ST players and Okoronkwo should be solid as well, but all three are on their last year. Rozeboom rounds out the remainder. No, I don't think Reeder makes the roster.)

DB - Jalen Ramsey, Darious Williams, Jordan Fuller, Taylor Rapp. Terrell Burgess (nickelback/third safety), David Long, Robert Rochell, Nick Scott, J.R. Reed, Paris Ford.

(The first four names - Ramsey, Williams, Fuller, and Rapp are probably starters. The nickelback position, I think, will be filled in by Burgess, although I think Long could make a solid case to earn snaps. Rochell, Scott, Reed, and Ford will be special teams.)

ST - Matt Gay, Corey Bojorquez, Steven Wirtel.

(Honestly, I think the writing is on the wall for Hekker. I hate my gut feeling, but given his age and cost, I think we end up cutting - or maybe even trading, if we're really lucky - him and replacing him with a younger punter who did well last season I also think that Wirtel wins the long snapper competition. Gay is obvious, though.)

Practice Squad: JuJu Hughes (S), Eric Banks (DE), Chris Garrett (OLB), Trishton Jackson (WR), Michael Hoecht (NT), Jonah Williams (DE), Brandon Wright (K/P), Derrick Moncrief (ILB), Raymond Calais (RB),

(I like Banks, Hoecht, and Williams a lot. I think they all have potential. Hughes did well in limited time. Jackson is an interesting receiver, Garrett is our pick, and Wright both kicks and punts, so he could potentially do both if - fate forbid - one of our guys is injured/ill. Moncrief is an inside linebacker; Calais is a running back/kick returner. I'm assuming we'll sign two cornerbacks and at least one other linebacker.)

So there. All critiques are welcome.

I was just adding up the players that I think are most likely to make the team - by my count that's 47 - and I was only using 53 as the total number that will "make the team", although obviously a lot of those guys will make up the practice squad

Can't agree on Perkins beating out Wolford.
Doubt Alaric Jackson rises beyond the practice squad for 2021 when we'll have a greater need for a back-up Center, whether it be Allen or Shelton.
I'm not ready to commit yet at 5T, Earnest Brown, Justin Lawler, Jonah Williams, Marquise Copeland & Eric Banks will have a huge competition on their hands, maybe even Terrell Lewis gets a look here.
If Hollins gets the nod to start at Edge & Lewis can compete at DE, it would be interesting to see if Chris Garrett can make the 53.
Hekker going means he's having a bad camp, so this isn't a foregone conclusion imo.

Good write up, and I agree with most of it.

I know Howard was supposed to be the starter last year before his injury but was he going to be the starter because the staff really liked him or was it because no one else stepped up? I really don't know and haven't heard much about him.

Good post there, mems.

I like the Perkins shocker, and would be glad to see it. But, I think Wolford is hard to beat. Look forward to seeing it play out.

I think Hekker stays, no doubt. He feels like a guy you keep around because he’s good but he’s your culture too. Perhaps the angle here is extra camp leg and priority trade chip if another team needs a punter by end of camp...It’s Borq the Rams trade.

I agree for training camp - however last season we only kept four on the roster. So for the regular season, having Ramsey/Williams/Long/Rochelle/Deayon is more than enough.

I disagree. IMO, a Super Bowl contender should have the last three competing for a final roster spot with the hope that one should perform well enough to convince the team to keep an extra CB. Or at the very least the final 3 should have to beat out a veteran with some starts to be that 3rd guy.

Last year we kept 4, so if we ended up keeping Rochell, Long and Deayon that would meet your criteria.

Not if they are kept without more competition for their spots.

But there would be competition - last year we only kept 4. So the scenario you're wanting could happen. If we keep all five, they were competing for that 4th spot and were all so good they convinced them to keep 5.

Plus that's pretty arbitrary - our CBs right now are significantly better than last year's Super Bowl participants.

Really? Does anyone here really believe that Donte Deayon really has much of a shot of making this team if they only keep 4 CBs? If he's cut again are teams going to be running to pick him up?

Sure, 3 players for 2 spots (if that's the plan) is a competition. But, a more talented and/or experienced player(s) added to the mix makes for a better competition. Iron sharpens iron. Besides, if Ramsey or Williams goes down, how confident are you in the remaining 3 players given that Rochelle is very raw and Long is still questionable after a couple seasons.

I personally think Deayon could be a find. Granted it was only hard knocks, but I was impressed. In fact, I'm currently of the opinion that he's a better CB than Long, although I could easily be wrong about that.

If one of them went down I think we would be fine - we would still have a top 10 CB, a rookie with potential, and then Long/Deayon/Burgess to man the slot. We would go from the best CB room in the NFL down to a middling one (if Ramsey went down), but that's also the risk of paying one player $20 million.

I'm also totally happy to bring in a vet to compete though. Like you said, iron sharpens iron.
