Austin: 'It's going to be a different story this year'

ST. LOUIS -- Tavon Austin says he doesn't pay much attention to his media critics.

Still, he's aware of what they've said. And, man, it used to bug him.

The analysis hasn't always been kind to the former first-round draft pick during his first two years in the NFL, where he has only 660 career receiving yards (though 375 rushing) on a team that desperately needed an offensive spark. The struggles of a first-rounder come with a different set of vocabulary when expectations aren't met. No one's calling a sixth-rounder, if he doesn't succeed in the NFL, a flop. Or a bust.

But from what Austin's heard of himself, he's been called just that: a bust. Proving the label wrong is one reason he so badly wants to elevate his game in 2015. But the criticism no longer nags him like it used to -- he's learned to turn it into motivation.

"Focus is focus. It's going to be a different story this year," the wide receiver declares.

He admits last year's situation on offense -- in which injuries forced the Rams through several quarterbacks under former offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer -- left him with few opportunities. This offseason, he's optimistic.

"Basically, it depends on opportunity," Austin says. "Last year, I didn't have too many opportunities out there. Different offensive coordinator, different quarterback. I'm just thankful -- things are working out in my favor right now and hopefully, everything just keeps going my way."

With new offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti's system, Austin feels his role is changing.

"He definitely comes and talks to me a lot, asking me what I see out there, what I like," Austin says. "He tries to get me a little more involved in our offense. So I'm definitely happy with that."

Comparing that involvement now with past seasons, however, Austin modifies his statement -- yes, he felt he was involved before, but that now might be "his time." His confidence is greater after two years in the league. He felt more focused heading into OTAs this June. In fact, his work this offseason draws effusive praise from his offensive coordinator.

"Tavon Austin's had a great offseason. Tremendous," Cignetti declares. "It starts in the classroom. He's learning, he's paying attention. He's bringing it to the practice field. You can just see it from his route-running. What a difference. His effort, his attention to details. Every day out here, the guy's made plays."

The other key ingredient to a successful 2015 for Austin is the guy who will be throwing the passes. In Austin's first two years in the league, he's had to deal with four different quarterbacks. This season will introduce a fifth -- Nick Foles, whom the Rams traded for this offseason. Austin says he and Foles have come a long way already in developing chemistry.

"I feel like he looks for me a lot," the wide receiver says. "Just still little things that we've got to piece together, and we feel like we'll be OK -- (not just) with me, just with all the wide receivers, and we'll definitely have a successful season."

Media, you've been warned.

For those of you worried about what Austin says about the media and staying focused, lets be honest, the guy won't win an academy award for being articulate. I wouldn't read much into it. He loves football and that's one thing you can count on.

Here's what would be sweet. I mean, reeeeeally sweet.

What if two more players from that '13 draft were able to step up this year and be quality starters?

I'm referring to Tavon Austin and Barrett Jones, of course.

Austin
Ogletree
McDonald
Bailey
Jones
Stacey

THAT would then be considered a helluva draft.

But those two remain big "if's" at this point, don't they?

Still...

We can dream, can't we? Lol.

“Tavon Austin’s had a great offseason," Cignetti said. "Tremendous. It starts in the classroom. He’s learning, he’s paying attention. He’s bringing it to the practice field. Tavon’s had a great offseason and he’ll continue that into training camp.”
Could be reading too much into coach speak here, but this part caught my attention.

I think he has the problem Quick had. Just learning the playbook and all the reads and audibles that go with it. It has Tavon thinking so much he's not as fast and fluid as he can be. I think he will start to get comfortable with the terminology and the finer details of being a pro WR. I think he will be fine, he's hardly played with a quality starting QB.

The Tavon Austin Hype Train Is Leaving the Station
By 3k

http://www.turfshowtimes.com/2015/6/22/8807267/st-louis-rams-tavon-austin-news-updates

The push to resurrect Tavon Austin is here.

From Nick Wagoner at ESPN:

Entering his third season, Austin says he has made it a point to block out what others have to say but he hasn't been able to completely avoid the criticism. It's part of why Austin views this season as critically important to his NFL future.

"I think it’s real big to be honest just because of how the media say I’m a bust and all of that stuff," Austin said. "I really don’t pay too much attention to it but I know one thing about it is when I’m focused, I’m focused. It’s going to be a different story this year and we’ll see what happens when we get to the end of the year."

From Jim Thomas at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:

In the continuing efforts to get Tavon Austin more involved in the offense, Cignetti liked what he saw from the wide receiver this spring.

"Tavon Austin’s had a great offseason," Cignetti said. "It starts in the classroom. He’s learning. He’s paying attention. He’s bringing it to the practice field.

"You just see it from his route running. What a difference. His effort, his attention to details. Every day out there, the guy’s made plays."

----

Going into year three, the demands on Austin are higher than ever.

As the 8th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, a selection the Rams had to trade up and lose draft capital to make, Austin commanded an immediate level of expectation. As the first wide receiver taken in that draft, he'll forever be compared to the other wideouts in the class. Throw in the immediate productivity of the 2014 NFL Draft wide receiver class, and Tavon Austin's lack of productivity weighs heavier than at any point in his NFL career.

Rightly so.

After a sophomore season which saw Austin's targets drop by 25, receptions drop by 9, receiving yards drop by 176 and receiving touchdowns plummet to 0, Rams fans would be entirely justified in demanding more. For an offense that hasn't ranked in the top half of the league for offensive points or yards since 2006, excuses run thin.

And for Tavon Austin, Jeff Fisher and the 2015 St. Louis Rams, a "different story" needs to be more than a talking point.

So let me get this straight.

Austin professes he is going to make an impact.
Brockers professes he is going to make an impact.
Britt professes he is going to make an impact.
Cook professes he is going to make an impact.

The freak have you guys been waiting on? lol.
J/K. I'm glad to see the renewed focus.

In a word Foles,
it was because of the unsettled situation at quarterback, where Bradford’s devastating knee injuries led to Kellen Clemens, Shaun Hill and Austin Davis leading the offense.

I still wonder about the number of drops early in his career with Sam forcing the ball to him...Seemed like he didn't want the rock after the 4th-5th games...Especially across the middle.

He appeared to lose a bit of confidence early in his rookie year. He'll drop a ball here and there, but you got to find a way to get the kid the ball if you want him to produce. That game vs Indy was silly, I don't see why he can't be designed 4-6 plays a game to get him the ball with a head of steam whether it be a quick hand off, reverses or crossing patterns. Also with his speed he has to be accounted for, he can be a clever decoy to help spread out the D.

Agree to a point, definitely as a decoy...but you must take what a defense gives you...forcing the ball to any receiver is never a great option...All game plans have designs to attack certain expected weaknesses in a defense, but at his size, trying to go to him, when covered, is asking for trouble.

I really think you're right. He'll be a good utility player: returner, back, receiver, but he'll never excel at any one thing, except maybe returns.

Of course he WANTS to gave an impact, it'sa matter of IF he does...Everybody says the right things this time of year...I'm not real impressed by the optimism and chest thumping in the off season any more,,,Show me when the real deal starts...I'm cautiously optimistic, but I always am this time of year...Maybe this year the kool-aid will have enough sugar in it...

Who is the most scrutinized St. Louis Rams player?
by Colin Hubbard 17h ago

Whether we like it or not, every team has a scrutinized player. And as far as the St. Louis Rams go, this is a very obvious pick. Tavon Austin is easily the most scrutinized player that plays for the Rams.

Austin was the eighth overall pick for the Rams in 2012 and was expected to be one of the most deadliest wide receivers in the NFL. But, in order to be deadly, you have to have the ball in your hands and well, that just hasn’t been the case in his first two seasons.

Austin has just four touchdown receptions and 660 career receiving yards, and most of that came in his rookie season where he had four scores and 418 yards. In 2014, Austin had zero games with five or more receptions and was targeted just 44 times! 44 people. His 44 targets transferred into 31 receptions, 242 yards and zero receiving touchdowns.
Who was the last receiver before Austin to get drafted in the top 10, and have less than five touchdown receptions in his first two season with no major injuries? Not sure, but good luck finding one.

Austin has noticed the criticism as of late and isn’t very happy with it. Austin voiced his opinion recently and had several things to say. “I think it’s real big to be honest just because of how the media say I’m a bust and all of that stuff,” Austin said, via ESPN.com. “I really don’t pay too much attention to it but I know one thing about it is when I’m focused, I’m focused. It’s going to be a different story this year and we’ll see what happens when we get to the end of the year.”

Offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti stated that Austin has had a great offseason and expects him to have a great 2015 season. Lets hope that’s true because as of now, he is a bust. Nick Foles will give him opportunities to shine, so lets see it. But if not, we will continue to scrutinize him for all the right reasons.

I would have thought it was Nick Foles...but what do I know?

St. Louis Rams: 5 Key Stats
by Russell S. Baxter 1d ago

9

In 28 games, the eighth overall pick in the 2013 NFL draft has scored a total of 9 touchdowns. To date, the decision to trade up and take University of West Virginia weapon Tavon Austin early that year has not panned out.

The career totals read as such:

71 catches for 660 yards (9.3 average) and four touchdowns, 45 rushing attempts for 375 yards and three scores, 68 punt returns for 671 yards and a pair of touchdowns and 20 kickoff returns for 417 yards and zero scores.

That’s an underwhelming total of 2,123 combined yards (75.8 average) and nine touchdowns.

With a new quarterback in town in former Pro Bowler Nick Foles, wideouts such as Austin, Stedman Bailey, Brian Quick, Chris Givens and 2014 free-agent pickup Kenny Britt all need to pick up their games.

He had more runs than receptions last season. Less than 2 receptions a game. That's just bad offense. No way that's a reflection of his skills.

Austin threads are the new Bradford threads, minimum of 2 pages to argue to and fro about him.
