4 reasons to love Allen Robinson signing with the Los Angeles Rams

Matthew Stafford has a new wide receiver that meshes with his style perfectly...hand meet glove

By Christopher Daniel Mar 18, 2022

The Los Angeles Rams made their first splash in free agent, signing former Chicago Bears wide receiver Allen Robinson to a three-year, $46.5 million deal. Robinson is a gifted athlete and a special receiver. His peers voted him as the 87th best player in the league on Top 100 players of 2021, even with less than stellar quarterback play. There are a ton of reasons to love this addition.

Robinson is a jump ball specialist

The Rams no doubt already had an elite receiving corps. However, there may have been one thing missing: a proven jump ball specialist. They now have this in Robinson; a player that can go up and get it. This is a trait that will mesh beautifully with Matthew Stafford and his willingness to give his guys a few 50/50 passes.

View: https://twitter.com/i/status/1504547463251873801

Having Robinson provides the offense with a playmaker that can make turn those into more favorable opportunities, especially considering he’s going to be covered by defense’s second and third cornerbacks. Don’t be surprised to see Stafford’s interception total dip in 2022.

LA has four receivers rehabbing season-ending injuries

This signing takes a bit of the offseason and early season reps off of Robert Woods and Odell Beckham Jr. (both suffered torn ACL’s), assuming he re-signs with LA. Robinson’s arrival also allows the Rams’ training staff to be a bit more patient during their rehab. Los Angeles also has TuTu Atwell (shoulder) and Jacob Harris (ACL and MCL) rehabbing serious injuries.

How Robinson’s addition impacts the rest of the Rams’ receivers

When healthy, this may be deepest pass catching group in the NFL

Who is stopping Cooper Kupp, Woods, Robinson, Tyler Higbee, and OBJ? Even if Beckham Jr. decides to go elsewhere, those pass catchers are deadly with Stafford at the helm. Throw in Cam Akers and Darrell Henderson catching passes out of the backfield and it’s going to be a problem for opposing defenses. This may be the group that forces head coach Sean McVay to expand beyond their base 11 personnel.

View: https://twitter.com/EricNMoody/status/1504657168817172491?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1504657168817172491%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.turfshowtimes.com%2F2022%2F3%2F18%2F22984254%2Flos-angeles-rams-reasons-to-love-allen-robinson-free-agency

A new nightmare matchup in the red zone

Expect Los Angeles’ efficiency in the red zone to increase, where Robinson’s 6’2 220 pound frame will terrorize cornerbacks. McVay incorporated fade routes into the offense’s DNA last season and they are likely here to stay, especially since it led to the game-winning score in the Super Bowl. Though Kupp showed the fade route can be part of his repertoire on the go-ahead touchdown, it isn’t necessarily “his thing.” That route was likely designed for OBJ, had he been available.

View: https://twitter.com/NFL/status/1430183124416221184?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1430183124416221184%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.turfshowtimes.com%2F2022%2F3%2F18%2F22984254%2Flos-angeles-rams-reasons-to-love-allen-robinson-free-agency

Now, those fades go to Robinson. His size, catch radius, and reliable hands will shine in those circumstances.

Guys..
Allen Robinson is really good.
Put him in McVay's offense, with Stafford.. opposite Kupp.. and you're going to be removing a lot of souls.

This is the one I saw today at about 5pm. A couple hours after the A Rob news broke. Yea not sure how to take it, I bet he's not super pleased but has to understand given his injury right? But maybe if we trade Woods he'll calm down a bit. Would suck to trade Woods then not resign OBJ though.

Me not we.

He doesn’t even realize how broken he is.

I like how he was coming on and before blowing out his knee again, resigning would have been good. Not so sure now unless it’s is a very low cost prove it deal.

I’d find it hard to believe the Rams will have 3 15mil WR and keep OBJ and have their last 2 2nd rounder picks at WR. I think the Rams know they have other holes to fill but couldn’t pass up Allen Robinsons potential. He can come in and take Woods spot and offer more variety to the offense. Woods and Kupp have some similarities and neither have Robinsons skillset. Robinson has always shown the potential to be a dominant #1 type and top 10 WR in the league. Woods can now be moved to fill another hole and we keep an elite WR core. I like the move but sad Woods has always been a favorite since his USC days.

I think the Rams will run with Kupp, ARob and VJ to start, slowly work in Woods (likely at the expense of snaps for mostly VJ and Kupp who we have to guard against overworking...) and then bring along OBJ for the December stretch and playoff run.

No idea how that affects guys like Harris (who I think is a major project with MAJOR upside) or Atwell (who I think we're seeing just isn't the kind of WR that's gonna gel with Stafford who prefers bigger WRs who can separate or at least win those jump balls).

I highly doubt we're gonna ship out Woods unless it's a swap for someone like Danielle Hunter from Minny or Xavien Howard from Miami...

In short, I think we hold on to these guys and stack. Pretty sure everyone would be okay with fewer stats and another ring (or a ring in the case of Robinson)

I see the bigger changes coming after this season, but I've not been remotely connected with this off-season, everything's been a surprise.

But please, to paraphrase that great Britney defender, "LEAVE BOBBY TREES ALONE!!!"

Did anyone catch obj tweet? I don't have access to it right now but he posted it at 7:49 pm ...I wasn't sure how to take it. If you guys see it give your thoughts. I thought of it as annoyance anger betrayal but not sure.
I definitely think there is more here with a rob. He can block and has different skill set than Kupp hate to say it but Kupp and woods are similar woods may go. If not woods than Jefferson.
Kupp is bigger, more physical, and tougher to bring down than Woody. Woody's good but he's no Kupp. The problem with Woody is that fucking contract. If they hadn't put him into that $15M range they'd be able to keep him but this is a business and he deserved his payday.

But anyway. Robinson is a lot like Kupp in that he's good enough to where even when focused he's going to be open. He's also open when he's covered. Stafford is going to love this dude.

It amazes me how fast the Rams work too btw. I mean throughout this past season you could see the need for a WR changeover in terms of bringing in guys with contested catch ability. You saw it again in the playoffs. Even saw it in that "go deep" moment from Stafford to Jefferson where he didn't even attempt to go get the ball. From there I figured it would take a couple offseasons to load the types 9 wants in there.

But here we are the very next season and they bring in a monster in Robinson. An absolute beast. This is going to be fun. Goddamn I love this team we are so blessed. :trophy:

I agree completely. Love the organizational philosophy..

Schrager was on Pat McAfee show and said the Rams were bummed, but immediately after Von went to BUF said "Hey, money to spend now" and moved right on. They didn't sit and dwell.

I get that he's emotional and I don't blame him. That knee injury robbed him of a possible Super Bowl MVP. He was roasting Apple and they had zero answer for him in the pattern. And now he's gonna get a bullshit contract instead of the payday his play would have gotten him had that knee not failed him.

One thing in all this to consider is the rumor that his knee was a known issue prior. I don't doubt that our training staff had an idea of that given how good they are at their jobs. So by extension it seems like the holdup with him and the Rams is him digesting the reality of a short term prove-it deal.

But I would like to see him get done. I want Odell on this team too. He's a lethal piece in the redzone with 9 throwing to him. So hoping the Rams are the team to get him back to the market where he can go get a top contract and we get that comp pick.

Yeah and that's the scary side of FA. All it takes is one team throwing benjamins around. We are very fortunate that we got as many OL back as we did at the Rams' price. Remarkable I think the way that happened.

Von's a huge loss. But one good thing here is this edge group is supposed to be deep so maybe they find that long term piece finally in round 3.

I figure this year's team is going to be much more dangerous on offense. How good will come down to the OL gelling because outside of that they have everything you want. Except maybe a more power option on the ground but that's minor in the big scheme of things. Either way there's a good chance we're more offensively-oriented in 2022. Stafford with another camp should be faster through his reads/decisions. Robinson plus Kupp is a nightmare for defenses. Maybe we see them round out the RB room or maybe Akers just puts up that season we expected last year.

2022 is going to be fun. This ain't gonna be a Buccaneers run it back thing. Rams are retooled and reshaped around 9 a bit on offense. Defense is probably gonna be the draft focus. As long as the D has enough pieces these guys are going to be a tough out again in the playoffs for whoever they match up with.

I get the emotion about the injury and 2-53 and a TD, if I remember correctly was a great start. Who knows what the rest of the game brings if he’s not hurt.

The reaction to Robinson being signed bugs me though. The Rams had a need and opportunity to make the team better. Beckham isn’t even signed and he posts that????

Sounds like he is motivated but he could sign a deal for the Rams and word things differently to get support.

I for one do not feel sorry for him.

I’m looking forward to seeing if the use Robinson in the run game a little.. 220.. give the 9ers a little of their own Deebo treatment.

OBJ got a ring and he deserved it, but I'm not keeping him over Robert Woods if I'm the Rams. But then, we don't know how close Woods and OBJ will be back to original form. No everyone returns better than before after ACL injuries like Kupp did. That's why Robinson is the player we didn't know we needed as badly as we did. We just ASSUMED that Woods and OBJ would return to form. I want to see a triple threat of Kupp-Woods-Robinson out there for Matthew, it's gonna be sick! I am soured on Van Jefferson and have little hope for Atwell.

I think it's a mistake to get rid of Bobby Trees, unlike what @Mackeyser says!

I excepted the fact that the Rams signing Robinson leaves Woods as a viable trade option.

I don't know how it's going to play out. With Woods, the Rams would go into the season with :

Kupp, Robinson, Woods, and Jefferson. Woods feels like he would be ready for minicamp. (see link below)

That would allow him to be the number 3 WR and Jefferson the number 4 WR. Woods wouldn't have to take a full load right away. That would be exciting and darn near impossible to stop in a 4 WR set. That would also give the Rams insurance should one of them get hurt. At this point, Benny Skow, Harris, and Tutu are still developing and need to improve.

On the other hand, the Rams need an Edge rusher. A Woods trade that can help get the needed Edge Rusher is a good option. It makes sense to save a little money and get the defense the help it needs. Currently, I don't see enough pass rush from the current front to help a weaker. secondary.

OBJ could be signed later in the year the closer he gets to getting back on the field. The possibility that he signs elsewhere or isn't ready is still there.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Woods is now three months removed from his ACL tear, which typically comes with a six-to-nine-month recovery period. He is progressing well and has put a tentative timeline on his potential return. "I should be good by minicamp for sure, but I just want to be able to take my time," Woods said, per ESPN.Feb 12, 2022

What happened to Robert Woods? Injury keeps Rams WR ...

Yea no doubt man. Probably wins SB MVP given how CIN was taking away Kupp, and then we probably give OBJ a multi year deal in the $10-13M range if he comes out of that game healthy. But now, we cant risk going into next year with Kupp/Van Jefferson again so the Robinson move had to be made. Doesn't mean OBJ isn't going to be salty about it. But he's probably just frustrated with everything right now and how unfortunate it is he got hurt. I feel for the guy I really do. Hopefully he gives us one more year in LA so he can rehab and get back on the field. Then once healthy next year I bet Woods is gone 100% if not this year and maybe we give OBJ a multi year deal then.
