The first half of last season Goff was very good.
After the brofest and midseason get together something happened.
I think the weekend BBQ at McVay's house with Jared , Sean and their Girlfriends went south when they exited the pool for the hot tub

Leave it to a 49er fan to express what many of us have thought about Goff, but were reluctant to say:

"What I failed to consider was that he's just not that bright."

I'm a Rams fan and a Goff fan. Appreciate all that he accomplished for this franchise. But man, this harsh comment kinda sums it up. IMHO.

Now is the time to say that I was clearly wrong.

Man, he had promise. What I failed to consider was that he's just not that bright. Something between the ears was missing (similar to Jimmy G). I do think he's a solid QB, but he's not a guy who will take you to the Promised Land without an elite defense, running game and quality WRs.

However, now you have Matthew Stafford, who's twice the QB Goff was. I project well over 30 TDs and at some point some talk about MVP. Stafford has never had any help, other than Johnson a few years. He's never even had both a top twenty defense and top twenty run game in the same season (check out the Lions stats on Pro Football Reference for verification of this, year by year).

I also have a potential crow thread waiting to be made on a 49ers board over some morons who think Jimmy Garoppolo is interchangeable with Stafford. There is literally not an activity a QB does that Stafford isn't better than Jimmy in (except sleeping with porn stars), so during the trade rumors we who aren't pure homers were posting a lot of Stafford gifs and videos to demonstrate how he's better than Jimmy. They just wouldn't accept it. So as a 49er fan, hopefully Stafford has his best season, but the Rams lose the division to us and then bow out before the NFCCG. :ROFLMAO:

But yep. I projected Goff to improve. But he didn't have the smarts or heart to do so. I must admit my failure.

Go watch that Green Bay game. Mcvay already said how well he played. He was throwing dimes. 18-20 at one point. -Damage was Already done with Wolford.

This is more or less it. With one of the best offensive minds coaching him for 4 years he just couldn't get over the hump and develop into a true franchise changer. I dont think it had to do with heart, I'm sure he WANTED to get better. But definitely missing something upstairs. For a QB, reading the defense quickly, understanding what you are seeing and making quick decisions, recalling information from previous games, etc. he struggled with all this. Which is why he'll never truly be great. That and I never thought he was a great competitor or leader. Something that Aqib Talib echoed a couple months ago after the Stafford trade. He was asked if he thought it was an upgrade and he said yes in talent and in leadership. He said Goff wasn't a great leader. That's a problem when you're talking about the QB position and someone making $35M. But hey after Bradford and Goff I'm sure our next #1 pick will be the one. We're definitely due.

Rams gave him the keys to the franchise. They spent all that time around him, if Goff lacked leadership, intelligence or heart, how smart can our decision makers be first to draft him no 1 overall, then to give him that contract?

We did fine with Goff in 2017 and 2018. Highest scoring offense in the league, then second highest scoring Rams team of all time.

The man lost his aggressiveness and willingness to challenge defenses deep. Fell out with McVay because he wasn't executing the offense the way McVay wanted him to. And he no longer had prime Gurley in his backfield or a top 10 offensive line.

Goff did improve his game from 2016, dramatically, as I recall. He rebounded from a terrible rookie year to become a Pro Bowl QB and play in a Super Bowl. I'm not questioning his heart or toughness. Him gutting through that playoff game, two weeks from a broken thumb, was just a few months ago.

McVay ultimately decided he wasn't going to get his offense back to 2017-2018 levels with Goff at QB. Agree or disagree with him on that, but that's what was behind the trade.

I remember one of those HBO shows where he didn't know that the sun rose in the East and set in the West. To his credit, he later pointed out that Earth just rotates (after researching apparently ).

But even if he isn't actually dumb, he lacks some instinctual intellectual ability necessary for the position. Aka "processing," and in particular, this weakness especially shows up when things aren't going smoothly.

So, he's a good QB when everything goes according to plan, mainly because he has very good arm talent.
Go watch that Green Bay game. Mcvay already said how well he played. He was throwing dimes. 18-20 at one point. -Damage was Already done with Wolford.
I mean, if you can't have success in this scheme with such a talented offense around you, you are a perennial backup, so I would expect Goff to have some great games. Goff's arm talent will always make him starter quality, but you're going from a tier three or two starter to a guy just on the cusp of elite. Pretty easy decision, IMHO.

Not possible because it's too wet. Maybe it will be infested with black mold and will be condemned?
That’s a terrible nickname their new rookie QB.....
When it was being built I did sneak through the fence and take a leak on the building however.
I always keep it classy.....

I think it was a lot of things. Sure he was good in 2017 and 2018, when he was mastering McVay's offense and the OLINE was great. But then when the OLINE wasn't so great, McVay expected more of him. He expected him to make up for the lack of talent on the OLINE (and evidence to that fact may be, Stafford was acquired for that purpose also). There was also a bit of mixed messaging to my mind. Gotta make the aggressive throws but gotta protect the ball. And I think it's possible part of the maturation of Goff involved questioning some of McVay's decisions or what he expected Goff to do in certain situations, wasn't the same as what Goff thought should be done. We'll probably never really know the whole story but we'll see 2 things this season and next.

1. Is Goff a bum who's performance was good thanks to McVay's system?
2. Can a deficient OLINE be masked by a more experienced QB?

All I know is, I was a Goff fan until he was no longer a Rams player. Now he means nothing to me. Its all about Stafford for me. Because, well, team first.

I'm a bit disappointed he wasn't able to stick around. I loved his overall arm talent. He could make all the throws and threw a very catchable ball. To be honest, I think the pure pocket passer is a thing of the past. If you're as slow as Goff, you need a brain on par with Brady, Brees, Manning (Stafford???? We'll see. I hope so) etc, and I don't see that really happening considering how the college game is played now.

All I know is that if Goff isn’t good next year, there will be a lot of “I told you so”’s
And if he plays really well, there will be a lot of “I told you Brad Holmes would turn that franchise around”
