A question about the draft. Much is made of the Falcons choosing Penix. How come there's no consternation about the Chargers taking a RT at #5? I know Alt is a LT but not for the Chargers until 2026. It's great to have 2 good starting OTs. But the Chargers didn't "need" an OT. They needed WRs.

Harbaugh wants to play physical football.
They got the receiver they wanted with their 2nd pick in McConkey

my best guess the reason is because you play 2 tackles but only 1 QB on offense.

I can’t stand him either.
I’m sure he’ll wear out his welcome with the Chargers in a few years.

.

For those crying for poor Arthur blank being blind sided with the Penix pick.

Here you go. You can put the tissues away now.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports the Falcons ranked Michael Penix as the 2024 NFL Draft’s second best quarterback.
Caleb Williams was presumably the only QB Atlanta’s front office had ranked above Penix, who the team took with the eighth pick. Fowler said Falcons owner Arthur Blank “loomed large” in the decision to take Penix with a top-10 pick. Blank, per Fowler, “fully endorsed long-term stability at the position, which Kirk Cousins, at age 35, cannot satisfy to the same degree.” After Matt Ryan and Michael Vick ran the Atlanta offense for the better part of two decades, Blank has no interest in a quarterback “carousel,” Fowler said. The strong-armed Penix, 24, should get a fair number of QB1 snaps for the Falcons in this summer’s minicamp and maybe in training camp if Cousins isn’t fully recovered from his 2023 Achilles tear. There remains little chance of Penix starting in 2024.

I think it hasn't been determined where he'll play, no?

I think you could make the argument easily that they needed WRs and there were great one's avail but Harbaugh has had significant success everywhere he's gone, I think, once you earn that you earn the right to build your program however you want till the wheels fall off like Bilicheat.

Oh I agree. LOVING the Verse Fiske pairing!

I was just saying that their initial target prior to the draft was Bowers and it was… and in a REALLY rare turn of events, we didn’t get a meaningful trade until the Vikes traded up to 17.

We talk about overpaying… this forum woulda lost it’s collective shit over what we’d have paid to trade up for Bowers.

I’m thrilled with how it turned out and the think we’re a better team than had the trade happened even as I acknowledge that Bowers is a beast of the first order
I would have been very excited if the Rams have drafted Bowers. Even if the trade up cost was this years second plus a third.

I am a big believer in getting a game changing player whenever possible. I think Bowers is that type of player, especially if he’s paired with the right head coach.

I rate Murphy and a bit higher than Verse. It seems like the Rams did too.

My favorite in this draft as a game changer was Newton but once it was discovered that he had a Jones fracture in his foot, which is usually a recurring injury, he became too risky.

I’m fine with Verse and Fiske. They should be good players.

Media starting to realize a mediocre 36 year old QB coming off an achilles isn't a sure thing. They'll get there. Eventually. :laugh4:

The real question imo is why the Falcons signed Cousins and draft Penix both. If they saw Cousins injury as a big risk then that contract was a bad decision. He visited with the Falcons medical staff so that apparently was not the case at all.

So, why draft a 24 year old QB the same year as signing Cousins. I’m going to guess. Maybe they were not clear on how they felt about Penix during free agency. Once they got to know more about Penix they started to regret signing Cousins.

In the end they apparently felt Penix was too good to pass up. IMO he’s not good enough to have picked him at 7 after signing Cousins. They passed on some good players that help them win now. They could have had Odunze, Murphy, Latu, Verse, Turner or an OT. The odds of all of these QBs becoming very good are not great. Penix has limitations. I think he has a good chance of being a bust.

I'm not a Harbaugh fan. Think he is kind of an asshole. But, I also believe, he doesn’t know what he is doing.

Harbaugh had success at Stanford. He relied on cheating to finally have success at Michigan. He walked into a totally stacked defense in San Francisco and installed a new offensive scheme that flummoxed the league for a year or two. After all of that he was asked to leave. I think most of Jim Harbaugh’s NfL success is very debatable.

Cousins to serve as bridge QB which allows a competitive team and Morris to win now. Penix for the future.

I know you don't like Penix. I do. But regardless faulting a team for taking the most important position when it has been a continued problem, and when the guy you are bringing in is a borderline answer... That is silliness.

We'll see how this shakes out. But if I were an Atlanta fan I'd be feeling real good about QB.

I put money on his continued success

Also, thank god this franchise has never had anything to do with Trent Baalke

I really wanted Bowers and can’t help but wonder how the draft might have fallen if the coin toss went another way.

Crazy if true. A coin toss?

First-round pick says Raiders used draft-day 'coin toss' to select Brock Bowers over him at No. 13 overall

Many expected Terrion Arnold to go earlier than he did in the 2024 NFL Draft, with the Detroit Lions ultimately stopping the Alabama cornerback's first-round slide by selecting him No. 24 overall. According to Arnold, the Las Vegas Raiders nearly swiped him much earlier, only to instead take tight end Brock Bowers at No. 13 overall because of ... a coin toss.

"(The Lions) knew that the Raiders were a possibility," Arnold told "The Next Round" podcast this week. "And actually the Raiders coach, they called me after the draft, and they were like, 'We actually had a coin toss between you and Brock Bowers. It landed on him.' I was like, 'Oh wow.'"

Is Arnold simply echoing a figure of speech? Or did the Raiders use a literal coinflip on draft night to make their choice?

Raiders general manager Champ Kelly told reporters Wednesday he "can't confirm" whether an actual coin toss occurred, commenting only that Las Vegas is "excited to get Brock here" as part of the offense. Arnold, meanwhile, appeared to suggest that head coach Antonio Pierce had, in fact, claimed an actual coinflip took place, per The Athletic.

Continued success from what? His NFL ending was not a success. He cheated to win and then ran from college.

I don’t see success. I think he will be an average to bad head coach. I feel bad for Herbert.

It has been recently reported that the Falcons saw penix as the #2 QB in the draft. Right or wrong, that’s how they felt. When he dropped to them, they felt they had to do it. I get that, but what becomes interesting is “now what?”

I’m sure their draft board wasn’t built around getting penix, but they did nab defensive players the next 4 picks. IMO, this draft works IF penix starts sooner than later (because the falcons were right about penix), the defense noticeably improves, and eating the $$ they paid for cousins doesn’t prevent them from pursuing/retaining good players. This is not as catastrophic as some make it out to be.

As for the possibility of penix being a bust, you’re 100% correct. The odds are against him and every other QB drafted this year. There’s just no way all of these teams are right. I will say though, he’s not in as bad of a situation as some. He’s got a good run game and OL.

Williams is in the best spot to have success if he doesn’t have a horrible rookie season. They brought in a lotta talent for him. McCarthy is in about the best spot he can be with an excellent offensive-minded HC and about the best WR in the conference.
Daniels is in a good spot as far as roster, but I just don’t see him making the transition to the pros as smoothly as some—just my opinion. Maye, IMO, would have a great chance if he sits a year while the cheats build a roster and if their HC turns out to be good.

…but what do I know?

I don’t understand how they saw Penix as being that good. They made Stafford comparisons. I think he has some serious limitations. Plus a surgically repaired knee. These fifth year QBs have a big advantage in college. It can be misleading imo.

Again, I totally agree.
I didn’t play college sports, but HS? Hell yeah, I would have liked just one more year playing basketball.

Once you go pro, that’s the whole idea—experience over newcomers. The challenge for rookies is coming into a situation they have never seen in their life—EVERYBODY is good.

Ideally, penix sits a season and starts in 2025. That would be his best shot, IMO.

It looks as though the Falcon locked themselves into at least 2 years of Cousins. Unless they pay him to sit for one.

The one report that I heard was the Falcons lured Cousins to Atlanta by promising him a four year commitment as a starter. He wanted to stay in Minnesota but didn't like it when they told him that they would be drafting a QB. O'Connell wanted Kirk to stay.

So, the Vikings were up front and honest, while the Falcons flat out lied. If I was Cousins I'd be pissed. If, he's being replaced in a year or two he likely just stays in Minnesota or considers other offers from other teams. They didn't tell him that they were drafting a QB. That's bad business.
