I think a poor 4th is more wasted than a poor 5th.

As far as not getting a futures contract, I am OK with that because Brown showed nothing in 3 seasons
Very true - I was thinking of putting in a comment like but it was a 5th round pick so......

Carolina is unquestionably going to franchise Burns
Indeed. Whatever top names are left at edge, if any after the tags are done flying around, will be grossly chased and overpaid for. I'll be surprised if we can get edge done in this market. Would be nice but seems unlikely.

Guessing we see a Fowler type move at that spot. Using FA to ensure the need level is lowered pre-draft.

I would like to see them bring one of those corners in, though Chicago's GM already said that Johnson isn't going anywhere so the corners are probably looking at the same shit. No idea if KC will do the same with Sneed, though the top ones are going to require pick compensation most likely.

We're probably looking at bargain level types in FA this year. Though if they get Dotson done I doubt it'll be a bargain. I'm mentally preparing for that at least and if they do manage to bring in a stud addition at any spot that'll be gravy.

I'm really liking @Kupped suggestion of seeing what happens with Khalil Mack
Last year of his deal, likely too old to re-sign for a team on the rebuild
Otherwise, I'm still on the "throw caution to the wind" train and offer up a big number to Danielle Hunter
Our corners and safetys would become a lot better when the opposing QB has no time to throw the ball.....

Alternatively, our pass rush would look a lot better if opposing quarterbacks had to hold on to the ball because all their targets were blanketed by our secondary.

There are always at least two sides to any story.

We need a CB1 and an Edge. FA for one and Draft for the other. Add depth to other defensive positions (ILB, DE, S). Keep Morris. Improve edge pressure, cover the deep passes, tackle better and bingo bango bongo we got a top 10 defense.

Maybe Mack shakes loose. But I would doubt that. Harbaugh is too smart to not at least try to get him going so for this season I'd be surprised.

Hunter might prove to be a revelation next to AD. But I think AD is slowing down, so they have to believe in Hunter if they do that, and ask themselves is this the guy we build the next several years of defense around in the event AD is a rush specialist or retires. But yeah that would not surprise me. Edge has been such a problem for us outside of that small window with Von that if they do that I can't blame them.

I wouldnt sleep on Byron Young, 8 sacks as a rookie. I dont want to think about a future without AD but there are some pieces in place

...

Legit Point but the Chargers are not in good cap shape entering the off-season.
$44M over the cap per Spotrac, and $46M over per OTC.

Mack's $38M cap hit is LAC's largest. Releasing him would open-up $23M of cap space, with $15M of Dead-$.

I've been on the Hunter train for a while and feel the same way you do.
Mack is an interesting alternative... I wonder if he takes as little as 15 for one year if he is cut? For a chance to play for Rams and compete for a SB? It also won't cost the Rams any comp picks, in that scenario.
If they're still playing the comp game hard.. and if they don't want to open up a lot of cap $$.. this could be attractive to them, I'd guess.

Pass rush, pass rush, pass rush...

Or would San Diego trade him for a conditional pick 4-6 round, potentially picking up his roster bonus of 5.5 mill, would still save them close to 20 mill in CAP, Rams could renegotiate his remaining contract of 17.5 mill. No comp pick in that scenario as well.
Definitely out of the box thinking, I dig it!

He's 32 which is concerning but the guy is a difference maker when he's engaged. He has a top coach coming in. Don't know the details of his contract and all that but why not just extend him out a bit and see what you can get out of him.

He's 33 in a month.
They restructured his deal last year which is why his cap hit is so high.
They're in CAP hell right now, 40+ mill OVER and that includes Herbert still on the cheap for '24 (Cap hit of "only" 19 mill)
They have to move on from either Bosa or Mack, they are a combined 70+ mill of cap space in '24
They're going to have to cut some guys to get under, basically throw away '24, and reload.
