LA Rams release OC Drake Jackson, places RG into question

The LA Rams offensive line has already become a mysterious jigsaw puzzle of moving parts. In order to make heads or tails of a number of questions, we have attempted to assemble the logic of pieces/players added or lost so far in the offseason. But, the plot thickens. Huh? Let us explain…

As a starting point, let’s begin with the presumed LA Rams starting offensive line configuration. With the retirement of Andrew Whitworth at offensive left tackle and the loss of Austin Corbett at right guard, we’ve been looking for moves that would indicate how the team planned to replace the vacated roles.

Additionally, we know that the LA Rams re-signed offensive tackle Joseph Noteboom, offensive center Brian Allen, and backup offensive center Coleman Shelton. Due to the amounts of their contracts, it did make sense to equate the compensation levels to starting roles. Allen would return to start at the offensive center, Noteboom would start at left tackle, and Shelton would start at right guard.

That was further supported by the fact that the LA Rams signed offensive center Drake Jackson and offensive tackle Adrian Ealy to Reserve/Futures contracts. Those moves, specifically the Drake Jackson signing, would backfill Shelton’s backup center duties, and allow the Rams to promote Shelton to the starting right guard position. That would also ensure a solid group of backup, with at least one player qualified to play each offensive line position. But now, the presumption to start Shelton at right guard is in question.

As we had theorized when the Rams signed Jackson, he was at least an insurance policy segue for the Rams’ depth chart at their offensive center position, a role that faced two players with expiring contracts. Now that the team has re-signed both centers, Jackson’s release seems to indicate that Shelton will continue in his backup center role.

As we said when the LA Rams released DB Kareem Orr, it was really a crazy time for the team to be releasing players. The Rams’ offensive line has been a unit thought to be in need of more depth. This move reduces the Rams’ roster at their offensive line. Because Jackson, like Orr, is on a minimal contract, the release is due to team fit and not to financial considerations.

If you were looking for indications of who will take over at right guard, this latest development seems to favor the potential of the team to start Tremayne Anchrum at right guard. The team has a clear backup left tackle in Alaric Jackson, and the addition of Adrian Ealy suggests a potential backup right tackle as well.

But with Jackson’s release, the team’s only true tested offensive centers are now Brian Allen and Coleman Shelton. The team will likely not place the fate of veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford in the hands of an offensive lineman who has little offensive center experience.

Perhaps this move suggests that the team is optimistic about drafting offensive linemen this year? Now that would be an intriguing plot twist.

Find this Drake Jackson reporting kind of strange because of the timing. Jackson gave up playing in late-February. Went bak to college to coach.

I realize Jordan Rodrigue (she’s great) tweeted Jackson’s release yesterday, and Bret Stuter (not a fan) has an article today but this is old news.

Guess it flew under the radar after the Super Bowl excitement; and maybe the Rams didn’t make any official announcement until they started their off-season program.

Yeah overthecap.com is very good at it the picks I listed were from their chart.

Rams projected (11) 2023 Draft Selections. Next year's 3rd day of the draft is owned by Snead. The only real element that could make a change in this projection is if OBJ signs a big contract elsewhere. That would most likely bring another 5th rd comp award.

Outside of the "UFA Compensatory Awards", there is also the possibility of the Ram Org receiving several 3rd rd selections if one or two Minority coaches are promoted.

First Day
#1-Traded away to Detroit/Goff

Second Day
#2-Rams Own
#3-Rams Own

Third-Day
#4-Traded away to Patriots/Michel
#5-Rams Own
#5-Rams
projected Comp/ UFA Corbett
#5-Rams projected Comp/ UFA Williams
#6-Rams received in a trade with Titans/ Woods
#6-Rams received in a trade with Packers/ Bojorquez
#6-Rams Own
#6-Rams
projected Comp/UFA SJ-D
#7-Rams received in a trade with Detroit/ Brockers
#7-Traded away to Packers/ for 2023 6th rd
#7-Rams projected Comp/ UFA Okoronkwo

We don't have our own 7th next yr. Was traded to GB with the punter to get that 6th.

Also, likely we move a few picks for some trade deadline needs this yr, which is fine. That's why having those picks is important.

Maybe not. Maybe Snead trades all ten projected Day 3 picks for a late fourth-round draft choice in a mini-tribute to Mike Ditka’s Ricky Williams trade.
I should expect that Snead might indeed do some serious trading of his 2022/2023 draft selections to move at will up or down or stock into future Ram drafts.

I believe Snead would like to be in a position to pick very early instead of near last on Saturday, April 30th in that 4th round & utilizing some of his 2023 draft ammo assets to get to that position.

Seriously, they will need a draft soon where they focus on quality over quantity. Move multiple day 3 's to get a few extra day 2's or maybe even using a #2 and later picks to get #1 if the right guy falls, should happen if possible.

They will need to get some young star players in the room soon. Especially on the DL where Donald won't be around forever or playing at the level he is now. He will need more help. Same with Ramsey. He could be moved to S in a few more yrs. Need to find a high quality young CB to take that #1 spot.

Not sure I agree, Philly. This current Ram draft strategy is working superbly.

I’m reminded of that old saying, ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’.

Well, your strategy works because you are surrounding stars with role players. Eventually they will need new stars.

New stars don’t always have to be drafted let alone drafted in the first round.

Well, first off I recall you tearing last yrs draft apart... So nice to see you have more patience now.

Anyway, when you look at this past yrs team and their SB run, who led the charge?

To me the guys that made it happen were...

Donald
Stafford
Kupp
Beckham
Miller
Ramsey

All first round picks except for Kupp.

Even the supporting cast of key guys who stepped up at various times, like Robinson, Akers, Jefferson, Michel, Floyd, Havenstein, and Whitworth, were either first or 2nd round picks.

Sure, other late round guys stepped up, like Jones, Gaines, Scott, Williams, Noteboom, Blanton, etc... However, you need those top dogs to lead the way and unfortunately eventually they will be gone.

So by either trade or draft, you need to get some new blood in that lead pack. The 01' Rams never were able to do that. As age and injuries hit, few new stars arrived. You still win with stars.

So just saying at some point you don't need eight 3rd day picks every year. Package them in trades for players or higher picks with a better shot of getting a higher quality player.
