Ole Miss football assistant coach
Jeremy Springer, recently hired by
Lane Kiffin to
lead the Rebels' special teams efforts next season, is leaving for the same position with the Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams,
ESPN's Pete Thamel reports.
After the Super Bowl, three of Sean McVay's assistants were poached by other franchises. Offensive coordinator Kevin O'Connell is the new head coach of the Minnesota Vikings while secondary coach and pass game coordinator Ejiro Evero and assistant special teams coach Dwayne Stukes are joining the Denver Broncos is step-up roles.
Per Inside The Rebels' David Johnson, Springer served last season as the special teams coach at Marshall. Prior to that, he served for three years as Kevin Sumlin's special teams coordinator at Arizona. Springer has also spent time on staffs at Texas A&M and UTEP.
Johnson notes that Springer "worked directly with special teams coordinator Jeff Banks, and assisted with the tight ends during his time at Texas A&M. He was also responsible for organizing recruiting efforts in south and west Texas. Under Banks and Springer, the Aggies’ special teams were one of the nation’s leaders. In 2017, Texas A&M led the nation in blocked kicks and blocked punts. The Aggies also finished second in the nation in punt returns and third in net punting. In 2016, the Aggies’ special teams led the nation in punt returns and allowed zero blocked kicks. A year prior, they led the nation in punt returns and allowed zero blocked kicks in 2015."
Springer was one of several new hires this offseason for Kiffin at Ole Miss after a mass exodus of coaches left for other jobs after the Rebels' 10-win season, including offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby (Oklahoma).
"I think he's been a lot of places," Lane Kiffin said. "And ran our defense at FAU when we were really good that year. He then went to the NFL since then, learned at a lot of different places, had really good players, so that makes it easy to recruit to. Having been here before when they were really good, I think is really good for him recruiting for players to know, 'Hey, OK, he coached these guys who were here before. I'm glad for that.'"
