I think this option is contrived and out of place... and it's still better than the current version of the onside kick.

For "player safety" they basically eliminated onside kicks which happens what? 20-30 times in a season?
But lets add a whole game and some 150-200 plays per game

If a team wants a chance to win, play better earlier in the game so you don't need a manufactured way to get the ball back.

How about a rule that doesn't allow the NFL to change the rules every year to appease "that particular group over there" after a season where things didn't go their way.

I don't like this idea at all.
You need to earn the right to put the offense back on the field.
Make it 4th & 20, but even then a PI or def hold can hand a team a first down... And I bet teams could scheme things up to try to draw those type penalties.
I say fine, but if you do not make it the other team gets 6 points and the extra point try. This would be on top of say a pick 6 or strip sack return for TD. So it could be a 14 point (16 going for 2 twice) gamble.
Yeah. That one has potential issues.
For starters, they better have a plan to deal with how it could be used to manipulate timeout burning. Surprise a team running that unit out there, etc.

I was going to suggest what Philly Ram said, but he beat me to it. Plus added a freaking important factor like DPI. I thought, what's harder....converting a 4th and 15 (or 20) or recovering an onside kick? No thanks.
Here's an idea. Instead of a 4th and 15 or 20 or 25 yard play. They can attempt a 65 yard FG with the defense pressuring them. They hit it, they get the ball at their own 35. Or like somebody else said, just bring back the original onside kick.
