I’ll never understand it. Are some of these guys just so physically gifted that they completely take this chance of a lifetime for granted? Did they not dedicate their lives to reach the apex of the sport they love? Was it so easy for them that it carries no weight? How does keeping their precarious position atop the ladder of success not matter most to them?

I'd venture to say that in ways great and small, all but the all time greats take part or all of their pro career for granted.

It's that rare few who make every snap...every moment count.

Jerry Rice was one of those guys. Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant in basketball. Wayne Gretzky in hockey.

thankfully, very few pro athletes actually engage in criminality, but I guess the stakes make the risks that much less understandable, especially to us lay folk who can only dream of possessing such wondrous athletic gifts...

Man this thread has been really quiet this year or is it just me? Not a bad thing. But here comes The Football team to save the day. Athletic trainer skimming pills? Who knows but can that front office have any more fuck ups?

Federal law enforcement reportedly raided the Washington Football Team's INOVA Sports Performance Center last week, according to NBC Sports Washington's J.P. Finlay, Grant Paulsen and Julie Carey.
It appears to be related to an ongoing criminal investigation involving head athletic trainer and director of sports medicine Ryan Vermillion, who has been placed on administrative leave by the team.

Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post reported that the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration was behind the raid.

According to Washington's statement, the criminal investigation is unrelated to the team. When asked about the situation at his Monday afternoon media session, Rivera had no additional comment beyond the team's statement.
There are few details at this point. On 106.7 The Fan, Paulsen reported that the investigation has been going on since at least training camp over the summer, and that several people on the team had been contacted by the feds about the investigation.
Vermillion has been an NFL athletic trainer for 20 years, according to his team bio. He spent 18 of those years with the Carolina Panthers, working under head coach Ron Rivera for nine of them. Vermillion essentially came over with Rivera when he was hired by Washington, and is going into his second season. Paulsen and Finlay reported that Vermillion did not travel to Atlanta with the rest of the team for Sunday's game, and that his assistants handled on-field injuries.

Well maybe now we know why the Washington football teams defense is suddenly not as explosive as it was last years

Vermillion is highly toxic, some pretty good irony right there.

Not an arrest, but Urban Meyer was caught on camera basically feeling up a girl at least twenty years his junior - when he's married with kids, no less - and lied about spending time with his family at first.

Of course, I've come to expect this from Meyer, but I do feel sorry for the Jacksonville Jaguars players and fans, having to deal with this.

Wow. All of his money and he was collecting welfare? WTF?
No, not really - its more complicated than that. He ...

"received $1.1 million in funds from two non-profits whose owners have since been indicted on state and federal charges for their alleged role in the largest embezzlement scheme in state history.

Months after news of the scandal first broke last year, the auditor announced in May 2020 that Favre had returned a portion of the funds. White said he believed at the time that Favre was acting in “good faith” and that he had “seen no records indicating Mr. Favre knew that (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) was the program that served as the source of the money he was paid.”

In a statement today, however, White said the recipients of the misspent TANF funds, including Favre and Favre Enterprises, must repay the money within 30 days or face a civil lawsuit. This afternoon, Mississippi Today’s Anna Wolfe reported that the letter Favre received from White said the “illegal expenditures and unlawful dispositions were made when you knew or had reason to know through the exercise of reasonable diligence that the expenditures were illegal and/or the dispositions were unlawful.”

Just as bad. Claiming ignorance on that sort of scam is weak

Oh thank holy fate. I was worried.
The joke right now is absolutely nobody was interviewed about this. It's not a joke honestly but countless people have been asked if they were questioned about it and it seems they wrapped up an investigation without talking to anybody who actually worked for the team on the football side IE McVay and Jay Gruden.
