But how many times can you gamble on a weak, ineffective OL? We keep getting bit in the butt with regards to the OL. I’d like to protect our most valuable asset now in Stafford. Easier to fill an OLB edge spot than the OL.
I don’t disagree that the O-Line is critical.

I do disagree with categorizing the Rams’ OL as ‘weak’ or ‘ineffective’. Think it has been better than that.

My issues are supply and demand, followed by resources.

From a supply point, 32 teams / 5 starters per equals 160 starting O-linemen. I don’t think there are 160 good starters in the NFL.

Then there is the resource issue. With the 57th overall pick and limited cap space, which OL do you see the Rams in a position to add?

Our edge group is no comparison to our offensive line In my opinion.some people think the offensive line was bad and ineffective but clearly it wasn't If the Rams aren't kicking down the door to overhaul it

Yea the line was much much improved in 2020 compared to 2019, regardless of what many around here will say. If we are trying to resign Blythe that means we'll likely have the same starting 5 next year. Could we upgrade it? Sure we could, but it was still top 1/3rd of the league IMO. What this probably signifies is some of the perceived OL issues we had were actually QB issues.

People can debate about how good or bad or offensive line was but what you can't debate is it was at least top half of the league. And I always say this, but you can't find any reputable source that will say the Rams line was bad. But our edge group is not top half of the league. Our edge group is actually pretty bad. Floyd was kind of a saving grace in that sense. To be honest, who do we even trust to say healthy along the edge group besides Floyd? Because obo and Lewis are always banged up.
How good was Floyd before he got to the Rams last year? We have seen how playing with our DL has resurrected players looking to make a payday.

On the other hand, we just got by when Witt went down and in some cases that wasn’t enough. The poor play in the middle of the OL is what got Goff hurt.

Yeah if they come back with the exact same offensive line and only change QBs I think that will be telling.

Yea Aaron Donald seems like a 3rd round comp pick generator for us. Whoever lines up at edge with him can get 10 sacks. Which is why I dont want to resign Floyd. He was very good, both in the run and pass game. Better than Fowler. But letting him walk means a free 3rd round pick next year and there are many edge rushers available in FA.

I want to believe this report, but something is telling me it could be BS and a smokescreen. In all the years to let someone walk, this is the year. There will be tons of options in FA to fill the edge role due to all extra the players cut. Floyd wasn't unstoppable to the point he's a must sign. I personally dont believe this report but we'll see.

Can someone who understands the cap explain to me why Floyd is listed in the dead cap?

@CoachAllred I think we signed him for 1 yr 13 mill but his cap structure was $10 mill last season and $3mill to 2021 he still got $13mill. But ya know I'm a stoner so don't tweet it :ROFLMAO:

That is from incentives that he reached from the 2020 season.
If the Rams can re-sign him long term, this could get rolled up into his next contract. jmo.
Crazy,I just accidently stumbled on to this. lol

" The Rams signed Floyd in free agency in 2020 on a one-year, $10 million contract that had voidable years, which allowed his cap hit to only be $6.6 million. Because of that, LA is forced to pay dead money to Floyd in 2021 and 2022, but re-signing him would at least guarantee that he’ll be playing those seasons with the Rams. "

Floyd was excellent in Run D, and was big playmaker with not just sacks, but pressures. His long, lanky physic was also helpful in coverage and a few batted down balls.

I seem to remember what seemed to be quite a few times where he caused the QB to rush the pass or he had his arms up and the QB threw a bad ball. It wasn't just sacks for him, he caused more havoc than a person remembers.

I daily flip flop between wanting JJ3 or Floyd, but tend to lean more Floyd if it's possible.

He was also much more impactful and much more consistent than Fowler ever was.

Sure, AD most CERTAINLY helps, however, I'd rather retain a commodity that we know can ball and cause a lot of issues that don't show up on the stat sheet versus always having to find the next 1yr prove it deal and have no continuity.

Man I don't get GB at all. Less so about letting Kirksley go and Wagner. But Linsey is great plus next year they have 30 people under contract and $5 million in cap space. They just paid a top 5 RB contract and have Adams and Alexander hitting FA next year.

it's just weird. they draft a qb in the 1st and a rb in the 2nd and now it seems neither of the incumbents are going anywhere anytime soon.

Or that Rams have no cap space to sign a new center.

Yes, I agree there were issues with QB play. However, there were many drives last season that stalled due to defensive pressure through the "A" gap and/or a NT walking Blythe back into the lap of Goff, forcing him to abandon the play or take a sack.
The Stats say the Rams O-line were above average in sacks allowed, but my gut says the Rams had more stalled drives than what that Stat implies.

We dont know how things will turn out. If we think the OL is a huge priority to upgrade we obviously will. We could let Floyd walk, get a 3rd round comp pick next year and sign a cheaper Edge. Trade Brockers, restructure a bunch of contracts. Trade Woods or Kupp. There are a lot of ways to create enough space to sign a FA interior OL. I'm not against going one of these routes at all. But if the team decides to resign Blythe, then we will almost certainly head into next year with the same starting 5 OL. That would mean McVay and the front office dont feel the OL is as big of a concern as many around here would lead you to believe. Again we dont know how things will turn out next week, but Jourdan saying that she thinks we're trying to resign Blythe says a lot.
