I could see the possibility but I think there are younger and hotter defensive names out there.
Agree. While its possible, Keith Butler seems like a high-end career-coordinator. I remember him as a LB in the ‘80s.

Damn it! I am old.

But it’s possible. I thought of Fangio as high-end career-coordinator before he got the Denver HC job.

Good point about Fangio, but I don't see Butler getting a gig, younger DC's like Robert Saleh & even Brandon Staley will be looked at first plus college Head Coaches too with the recent success of Rhule (Carolina) & Kingsbury. Then of course everyone truly will want the young, up & coming OC's like Joe Brady for example, so Keith Butler IMHO, just won't get a gig.

Even Flores' DC Josh Boyer could get a look, does Flores become the defensive version of McVay where anybody that works for him as a DC gets a look as a coach? One of his young position coaches Gerald Alexander will start getting looks as a DC as well he's put together some impressive position coaching years in the few years he's been doing it and is a former player.

If we win a Super Bowl this year i can get past Staley leaving. Don't want to lose the guy but i could easily get it over it with a fresh championship in the trophy case.
Just sayin.

Agreed, but I would love to see what this defense could be with Staley around for an off-season and potentially getting more players to fit what he wants to do. I guess I'm just greedy, I want McVay and Staley tied up for years!

Maybe the 9ers go after Staley when Saleh bolts out of town. Just throwing the possibility out there!
I think the Rams would have to give them permission as it would be a lateral move. Unless they added assistant HC or some shit like that.

Nah, I thought @Karate61 was joking.
Rams would not have to allow him to interview. Only a move to HC doesnt require team approval.
Any other position coach is considered lateral. Assistant HC is same as OC

If I could rub magic pixy dust on some changes I would like to see:

49ers DC has Robert Saleh depart to HC Jax Jags they would love for him to return after departing from them in 2016! Time for him to ruin some AFC's Sundays

Saints DC has Dennis Allen depart for HC Atlanta Falcons to remain in the deep south. Major reconstruction era as large as back in 1865.

Seattle's lost OC Schottenheimer runs down to AFC Watsonville Texans as the new HC. I am tired of that hard core running attack twice a season.

Saints OC Pete Carmichael goes to LA as the AFC Chargers HC. Rams will see him often but only in as they utilize the same stadium.
Ok who do you know inside that messed up organization? Spill the beans!!!

That would be a mistake by Gruden IMO, find the next Brandon Staley, unless you can't.

Eh, Gruden has his team on the cusp of the playoffs because of the offense. He needs a DC to stabilize that defense. It makes sense for them. Wade can get them to average to above average. That's enough for Oakland to make the playoffs. Swinging for the fences makes a lot more sense once you've got job security and a team contending.

He's not going to SF for a lateral job, and they couldn't hire him away for a lateral job if he's under contract here.
Thanks for that. But, if they can hire him away for a head coaching job, why not a lateral job? Is that something in a contract unless it's for another head coaching job?

It's a NFL rule. We'd have to give him permission if he's under contract to take a lateral job. A HC job is a promotion, so he can take that.

The league passing on Saleh several years in a row gives me pause that we MAY be able to keep Staley for a few years.

Teams with good defenses who don't get their offenses sorted out are lucky to be .500 ballclubs and the coaching search starts again pretty soon.

In today's game, HCs have to get the offense sorted out.

now, I think Staley will eventually be a great HC if he wants to be one, but between Fangio not exactly having success at the HC level as well as the NFL recently bypassing some SUPER credentialed DCs for hot, but far less credentialed OCs and QB coaches (Zac Taylor wasn't even our OC before getting the Cincy HC job), I have hope that we can keep Staley for a few seasons.

I'm still shocked that 2 seasons have gone by and Saleh hasn't gotten an HC shot, yet.

Well from most years past, Teams that go deep in the playoffs or to the SuperBowl don’t lose the coach’s.

This year Saleh might be on the Lions or Bears radar.

Zac Taylor was an exception & had the z76.so called OC position before going to Cinncy of memory recalls right.

One major difference with Staley is although he's a DC, he played QB in college, IMO, that gives him a leg up on most defensive coaches. Saleh was close in Cleveland, but Kevin Stefanski was highly regarded by Browns Executive Paul DePodesta, who had suggested hiring Stefanski over Freddie Kitchens who ended up being a dumpster fire. DePodesta was given more power so Stefanski was always the lead candidate.

I do believe being in the Super Bowl, might have hurt Saleh too, but I'm really rooting for Saleh to get the Lions job bringing with him Mike LaFleur (Matt's Brother) to be his Offensive Coordinator.

Are you trying to ruin my favorite NFL saying, den? "The Rebuilding Since 1957, Detroit Lions" (Thanks Adam Schein)
