Rams starting linebacker Ernest Jones IV was a nonparticipant today at practice, something that is becoming a concern for the team. Jones has been plagued by an injury bug that started in OTAs and has continued till now.

When asked about his injury, Sean McVay cited a lingering knee injury as the reason for Jones' absence. It’s the same injury that hindered Jones during OTAs in the spring.

Jones said earlier this offseason that he was feeling good after slimming down a bit, taking some of the wear off his knee, but it seems this issue has popped up again.

While his knee issues call for precaution, as of writing, signs point toward Jones being ready to go for the team's season opener next month.

Elsewhere in Rams injury news, Beaux Limmer banged his thumb in practice today and had to exit early, while Brennan Jackson has missed the last couple of days with a soft-tissue injury.

I'm really hoping that the Rams are waiting for vet cuts after preseason to address a good MLB back up. Reeder is barely practice squad talent. Rozeboom improved last year, but there is a huge talent gap between Jones and him.

I hate hearing manageable ever since Gurley. I'm hoping it's something that will eventually heal and he'll be good to go.

Well my question is if the knee problem has been an issue for some time why not target a backup in fa or the draft? Seems like a bit of head scratcher

My galaxy brained take is the knee injury is not a big deal now and for the next year (just needs to be monitored) but it is or could be chronic and that led the Rams to slow play (or no play) signing EJ to an extension.

9 players to watch in Rams' preseason opener vs. Cowboys

The preseason gets underway for the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday afternoon when they host the Dallas Cowboys at SoFi Stadium. It’s the first of three exhibition games for the Rams, and while their top players won’t be suiting up, it’s an important day for their rookies and backups.
So which players should fans be watching when the Rams take the field this Sunday? There are plenty of intriguing guys who will be playing, led by Stetson Bennett at quarterback. Here are nine guys we’ll be keeping an eye on this weekend.

1
QB Stetson Bennett

Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports
Matthew Stafford isn’t going to play in the preseason and given Jimmy Garoppolo’s experience as a starter, he won’t suit up either – unless he wants to, Sean McVay said. That leaves Stetson Bennett and Dresser Winn to lead the offense.
A lot of pressure will be on Bennett to perform after he left the team for his entire rookie season. He’s expected to be the backup to Stafford for the first two weeks of the season while Garoppolo is suspended, which only amplifies the need for him to play well in the preseason, too.

2
RB Blake Corum

Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports
It’s possible McVay will take a cautious approach with Corum in the preseason but more than likely, he’ll play at least some snaps in Sunday’s game against the Cowboys. He’s a promising rookie who will play a meaningful role on offense this season, and it’ll be fun to see him go up against an NFL defense after dominating at the college level the last two years.

3
WR Xavier Smith

Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports
Smith is squarely on the roster bubble as the seventh receiver, needing a good showing in the preseason in order to secure a spot on the 53-man roster. He’s earned some positive remarks from the coaching staff this summer as he looks to carve out a role on offense and special teams, which is encouraging.
Assuming Tutu Atwell sits out the preseason, Smith could end up getting the bulk of the chances to return kickoffs and punts, potentially springboarding him onto the regular-season roster.

4
C Beaux Limmer

Brett Rojo-USA TODAY Sports
Limmer is listed as the third-string center on the depth chart but he’s someone to watch all preseason. He has a ton of upside as a rookie because of his pure athleticism, testing as one of the most physically gifted linemen at the NFL combine this year. There could be a legitimate position battle between Limmer and Mike McAllister to back up Steve Avila at center.

5
NT Tyler Davis

Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports
Davis should be the primary backup to Bobby Brown III this season, bringing excellent size to the defensive line. He’s not going to be a highly productive pass rusher but Davis was one of the best run defenders in college football last season. Brown probably won’t play in the preseason so Davis will likely get a lot of opportunities in the next three weeks. Keep an eye on how he performs this preseason as he jockeys for playing time in the regular season.

6
OLB Jared Verse

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports
Verse is the team’s top rookie so of course he bears watching – if he plays, that is. It would be smart for the Rams to at least give him some playing time in the preseason so he can get his feet wet against NFL-level competition outside of practice where he’s been outstanding. He’ll get to test out some of his pass-rush moves, like the killer spin move that he hit Joe Noteboom with in practice. Verse is only a rookie but he’s already one of the team’s most important players.

7
CB Tre Tomlinson

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports
Tre’Davious White won’t play in the preseason, nor will Darious Williams. Quentin Lake may not even play, and it remains to be seen if Cobie Durant will. Tomlinson stood out in the preseason last year until a third-game ejection put a damper on things, but he’ll have a chance to shine again this summer against three good offenses in the Cowboys, Chargers and Texans. A roster spot is on the line for the second-year corner.

8
CB Charles Woods

Chris Day/The Commercial Appeal / USA TODAY NETWORK
Woods is an undrafted rookie who has had some promising performances in practice, making plays on the ball in coverage when given the opportunity. As someone who isn’t a lock to make the team, Woods will get plenty of playing time this preseason. The Rams could use some depth at cornerback, too, with Williams injured and Derion Kendrick out for the year.

9
S Kamren Kinchens

Kinchens was a stud in college, picking off 11 passes in the last two seasons alone. He slipped in the draft because of his poor testing numbers, primarily a 4.65 in the 40-yard dash. As a third-round rookie, his spot on the roster is safe but he’s playing for snaps and positioning on the depth chart behind Kam Curl and John Johnson III. The preseason is a golden opportunity for him to showcase his range and ball skills.

I would be amazed if McVay played Verse in preseason. I just can't see that happening.

It's gonna be interesting how McVay plays the preseason. Lot of new faces and lots of nagging injuries. Will we see 1st team out there at all???

We've got to get another ILB on this roster

This is the one position that if we lose our starter we are pretty much screwed. Reeder and Rozeboom? Ouch!!
Losing Jones would suck. But we won a title without a top ILB. So I wouldn't say we are screwed if we lose him.

Losing Stafford is when we're screwed. Also Kupp probably, since he was instrumental in the title and has been instrumental to our offense since he came in. Probably an unnecessary splitting of hairs I realize. But I think those two, and maybe Jackson (LT) are the short list.

We will know more about Jones's status in the coming couple of weeks. If Jones continues to struggle with that knee issue
McVay and the team will certainly address this. I can't imagine the team will accept limping into the season with any position group.
I have concern, of course, we all do but I am going to stay positive.

I have read about Nick Hampton's development in more than one article leaving me curious. We haven't gotten much from the coaches themselves but they are busy with all those rookies and 2nd-year defensive players whose impact has already been felt and are expected to be the catalyst for our defensive makeover in the post-AD era

Los Angeles Rams Unveil Secret Weapon for Their Defense’s Future

August 11, 2024

The retirement of Aaron Donald left a significant void in the Los Angeles Rams’ defensive line. Recognized as one of the NFL’s most formidable defensive forces, Donald’s achievements included 543 tackles, 111 sacks, 24 forced fumbles, seven fumble recoveries, and 21 pass deflections over his decade-long career with the Rams.

In response to losing such a pivotal player, the Rams are currently reshaping their defense, highlighting younger talents such as Jared Verse and Byron Young. Additionally, attention is turning towards Nick Hampton, a prospect who could provide unexpected value to the team, according to Chris Trapasso from CBS Sports.

Trapasso expressed particular enthusiasm for Hampton’s development in the NFL, noting, "In a critical situational role, Hampton’s performance in his second year is what excites me the most." Despite initial concerns about his size and strength at the professional level—Hampton measured 6-foot-2 and 236 pounds at the 2023 combine—he has now had a year to acclimate to the NFL and time during the offseason to increase his physical capabilities.
Drafted 161st overall in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, Hampton’s rookie season was on the quieter side, with just four tackles in 10 games. However, his collegiate record at Appalachian State was impressive, boasting 176 total tackles, 26.5 sacks, six forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries. He was named third-team All-Sun Belt in 2021 and first-team All-Sun Belt in 2022.

Trapasso’s confidence in Hampton stems from his explosive college performance, where he was characterized by his swift initial movement, agility around the edge, and a repertoire of sophisticated pass-rushing techniques. With added strength, Hampton is anticipated to enhance his NFL play by adding a robust power-driven approach to his existing speed.
While Hampton may not be a full-time player yet, standing alongside talents like Ernest Jones, Verse, and Young, he is poised to be a strategic playmaker in specific situations that could exploit weaknesses in opposing teams’ offenses.
