Camp Report 08/08/23

Rams camp 8/8/23

made it out to camp today for the last practice in Irvine.

JJ running drills on sidelines during 11 on 11s wearing number 43

Higbee seemed limited today

My standouts - Witherspoon and Tomlinson on D. Kyren Williams and Puka on O.

McVay stopped practice a couple times to gather everyone at midfield to coach them up. Ran practice about 20 minutes past the scheduled stop time.

looked like Davis Allen in shorts and t shirt catching balls on the far field.

Here’s my voice notes for the day.

Ethan Evans booming 60 yarders also doing good job of putting the ball out of bounds inside the the 20. He kicked one on the point of the ball putting a nasty spin on it that Tutu had trouble fielding but he ended up holding on.

7 on 7 Witherspoon breaks up a short pass over the middle by Stafford

7 on 7 Stafford rolls out to his left with McVay rushing him Stafford trows 10 yard pass to Kyren Williams

Nice catch by Zach Evans down the left side line about 25-30 yards from Bennett

nice off schedule throw from Stafford rolling out left hitting Puka down the left side line for about 30-40 yards.

11 on 11 Stafford pitch out left to Williams defense stuffs the run.

Nice deep pass from Stafford to Van Jefferson for a touchdown

Pass by Stetson Bennett out to the right 15 yards down field should’ve been intercepted by Jason Taylor did break it up though.

both first string and second string defenses are playing the run really well.

Nice catch by Demarcus Robinson at the front of the end zone from Bennett about 25-30 yards down the middle

Starting O line LT Jackson LG Steve Avila C Colman Shelton LG Joe Noteboom RG Rob Havenstein Good to see he’s back out there after the neck strain

Second string online LT Zach Thomas LG McCallister C Brian Allen RG Ancherum RT Bruss.

Brett Rypien with a scramble up the middle for about 10 yards

Deep pass from Bennett for McCutchen but great coverage by Tomlinson, and Lecounte came over to take a swipe at the pass, ball falls incomplete.

Cam Akers continuing to bull through people not shying away from contact

Now Brian Allen’s running with the first string offense

Stafford on his second or third option throws over the middle to Tutu Atwell but it’s broken up by Witherspoon good coverage by secondary

Ethan Evans live punt kind of a line drive kick fielded by Austin Tremmell but coverage team was right there to meet him

Tutu blanketed by Cobie Durant with Jordan fuller right there as well on a mid range throw down the right side by Stafford, incomplete

Starting team is practicing two minute drill Stafford with a quick 10 yard out to the left side good diving catch by van Jefferson, run back to the huddle spike the ball

10 yard pass to puka Nacua over the middle of the field crossing right to left gets out of bounds

Stafford with a short pass out left that looked off target to Brycen Hopkins bounced off his hands as he had to reach back but seemed Stafford was telling him that he should have stopped when he turned instead of continuing to run

Ball over the middle from Stafford tipped by Jordan Fuller intercepted by Quinten Lake and he falls to the ground to “end the game” and the two minute drill

Practicing field goals now with full team Tanner Brown hits what looks like about a 30 yard field goal then he hits from 35 then he hits from 40 hit’s again from 45 Missed Wide left from 50 then Makes it from 50. Kids got a pretty good leg it looked like he had room to spare from 50

Nice catch over the middle by puka Nacua being covered by Ernest Jones

Inside hand off cam acres try to bounce it outside but Defense strung him out nowhere to go

Stafford tried to stop throwing motion mid throw ball slipped out of his hand incomplete

Second string Ronnie rivers drops a short dump off from Brett Rypien looked like he was trying to run before he caught it

Nice wide screen type play on the right sideline to Royce Freeman looks like it would’ve worked pretty well

Brian Allen now running with second string again

Starting o line Aleric Jackson Steve Avila Coleman Shelton Tremayne Anchrum and Joe Noteboom at right tackle

another nice screenplay on the right sideline to Brycen Hopkins this time

Second string line Warren McClendon left tackle Zach Thomas left guard Brian Allen Center McCallister right guard Logan Bruss right tackle

Jonathan Taylor breaks up a 35 yard pass down the left side intended for Christian Sims from Stetson Bennett

Looks like it’s time for red zone drills full 11 on 11 Brian Allen’s back in the starting line with Joe Noteboom at right guard

First play, pass from Stafford to Van Jefferson over the middle hit him at the 10 probably wouldn’t of made it in the end zone

Next play handoff to cam Akers bounced out to the right side probably would’ve gained 3-5 yards

next play Williams up the middle for a couple, refused to go down

Next play another pass intended for Puka on the right side broken up by Witherspoon again

Next play pass to the right side broken up In end zone

Next play touchdown catch by Puka from about the 5 yard line to the middle right side of the end zone

Second string Rypien over throws Demarcus Robinson after a roll out to the left-hand side

Hand off up the middle to Royce Freeman looks like it would’ve gotten 5-6 yards

Rypien touchdown pass from the 13 yard line to Demarcus Robinson in the back of the Endzone

Swing pass to Royce Freeman on the right side not a bad play

Another touchdown from Rypien to Robinson in the front of the end zone on the left side

end of red zone.

Back to mid field

O Line Jackson Avila Shelton Noteboom Havenstein

Noteboom pulls to lead Cam through hole on the left-hand side

Stafford Semi rollout reset to the left throws back to right for Puka but he fell down would’ve been wide-open for big gain

Offsides Bobby Brown. D line Young B Brown E Brown and Hoecht

Kyren Williams getting skinny up the middle for about 7 yards gets a high five from McVay. Then McVay either chewing out or encouraging the defense after that run

Stafford short pass over the middle to Higbee broken up by Rozeboom

Higbee seems limited today that’s only the second snap I’ve seen him and he seems a little out of sorts

Bad snap by McCallister over Bennett’s head Daniel Hardy got up limping after play a little bit but he’s staying out there

Nice pass on the run by Bennett over the middle to Austin Trammell cutting across the field from left to right being covered by Cameron McCutcheon

Off schedule deep pass by Bennett down the middle of the field for Burmeister overthrew him Tyon Davis leaped up ball hit him in the chest and he dropped it

Stetson Bennett rolls out left no where to through would’ve been a sack by VanValkenberg. practice over

Stafford staying out running sprints on the sideline all by him self

Xavier Smith staying out catching passes from the jugs machine

Puka Nacua doing a Rams interview with Cameron and Stu

Demarcus Robinson out signing autographs Xavier Smith out signingh autographs Number 43 out signing autographs and some other defensive player

Rams Coverage rates from last year

I'm gonna place there's here just for the edification of the board. The Rams do not play Tampa-2, Tampa-2 really isn't played much at all any more, at least, I can't think of a team that runs it right now. Cover-2, sure. But not Tampa-2. Tampa-2 is basically a 3 deep zone but the middle LB takes the middle deep 3rd, the last team to really do that was Chicago with Urlacher.

Last year we ran more Cover-4 (or Quarters) than any other team in the league which jives with this lineage of defense and spent a ton of time in Cover-3 (with the safety spun down). I'm sure there was a bunch of Cover 6 as that's a base Fangio coverage too but Bowen didn't track that. All of these coverage can be straight zone or be used in conjunction with man-match technique.

Bruss to RT? OL starting 5 as of today Aug 6?

I know some here don't care for Turf Show Times, but here's an article from today.

Apparently McVay has said that Bruss would be moving to RT, which seems to imply he will be a backup to Hav, and not competing for the RG spot?

I saw another guy make a similar OL starting 5 projection. Admittedly it's speculation at this point. But based on practice reps with the first team, as of now it could be:

LT-- AJ
LG--Avila
C-- Shelton
RG--Anchrum
RT-- Hav

To me, if accurate, this makes sense and is not at all surprising.

At LT, I've always thought AJ outplayed Boom, by a significant margin.
At LG, ya gotta give the promising top pick a shot.
At C, I've always been underwhelmed by Allen, and rooting for Shelton.
At RG, I LOVED what Anchrum showed in preseason before his unlucky injury. If he wins the job though, how can we keep him in 2024? Will he be an UFA or a RFA, anyone know?
At RT, of course it's Hav.

Other notes: Bruss looked absolutely terrible in preseason last year, so to me it's not a huge surprise that he might not be a contender for a starting spot.

Boom is what he is at this point... a great backup, but maybe an underwhelming starter.

I for one would be stoked if this were our starting OL on opening day.

Thoughts?

Who won the trade?

I was just curious as to what the general feel is for Lions fans this season. The first topic in the forum was the debate over who won the Stafford/Goff trade. One argument in favor of the Lions winning the trade is that we are no longer a playoff team and they are. And they have a good young team helped by Goff and the picks.

One argument in favor of the Rams winning the trade is the Superbowl championship. That is what everyone strives for. Detroit has yet to achieve that. Some are of the opinion Goff doesn't win that Superbowl. Maybe not even get there. Stafford led them from ten points down in the 4th quarter against the 49ers. Made a big throw to beat the Bucs. And a clutch drive at the end of the Superbowl.

My opinion? That trade is still yet to be determined. Detroit has a good young team now. But if you base it on the two years following the trade the Rams won it easily. A championship cements that.

If Detroit wins a Superbowl with Goff and the young talent they acquired with the trade, I'd say Detroit won the trade if they stay competitive for several years. Only time will tell. We did not stay competitive right after the Superbowl win.

The Incredible Life of Rocky Bleier

I remember seeing the tough running back for the Pittsburgh Steelers during the 70's and knew that he had been on multiple Super Bowl winning teams. What I didn't know was that this guy was drafted by the Army and fought in Viet Nam. He was drafted after his rookie season with the Steelers, when almost all other NFL players were not.

His legs were seriously damaged by a grenade blast. They were able to save his right foot, but the Viet Nam Docs told him he's never play football again. After which he was an integral part of four Super Bowl wins with the last one against our Rams.

Thank you for your service, Sir.

The end of the Big Ten and Pac 12

It really started last year when USC and UCLA jumped ship and joined the Big Ten

then last week Colorado joined the Big 12

and then.................

this morning , Oregon and Washington joined the Big Ten ,

and tonight , Arizona , Arizona State and Utah will be joining the Big 12

so it looks like by next week , the 110 year old Pac 12 will consist of Stanford , Cal , Washington State and Oregon State , and thats it

stick a fork in the Pac 12 , their done

and when I say the end of the Big Ten , they will now have 18 teams , thats it , game over man , thats no longer the Big Ten

with 18 teams , their will probably be teams we'll only play once every three years

Iowa will probably also lose thier three rival games every year , as it's set up , Iowa will play Nebraska , Minnesota and Wisconsin every year , and then rotate the rest , but now with 18 teams , probably can throw those three rival games out the window , we'll be lucky to be able to keep one

if we can't play Minnesota , Nebraska and Wisconsin every year....................I'll be pissed

greatest trophy in all of sports

bubbaramfan's Aug 3 TC Take

Good morning Ladies and Gentlemen (you too Merlin),

It was a good day of practice for the Rams yesterday, very heated at times. they were really getting after it in 11 on 11. My observations are gonna be vague, I didn't have my voice recorder or a roster with player #'s.
Day started with warmups, Xavier Smith, Nacua, Kyren Williams, one of these will be K and P returner. A Jackson was first player out on the field, Mike McCallister in shells pulling a wieght around behind him, did not practice.

Watched QB's take snaps and make short passed to WR's covered by one DB, wow, these WR's are making some hard sharp cuts, DB's doing well to cover, some of these youngster DB's look very good. (sorry, they have their shirts rolled up, can't see #'s)

11 on 11 is where I gave some play by play in another thread. O looked pretty good. The defense, especially the DL and pass rush not so good. Bobby Brown was 2nd string and a big disappointment to me. Slow and gets gassed after a few plays. They just aren';t very big up the middle. AD getting tripple teamed and the rest of DL can't get push. No pressure from the edge. I know its just one day's observation, but man, that's got to improve.

The OL looked OK, they need time to gell though, Shakey at times. Avila will be fine with work, Noteboom and Jackson took turns at LT with the ones, Allen played exclusively with the ones and Shelton the twos. Anchrum and Havenstien are locked in with the ones. Brusst played with the second team at RT and got his ass handed to him on more than one occasion. He needs work, although he does look better to me than he did last TC. Maybe T is a better option for him than G.

Middle LB is another huge concern, Jones is on his own, the rest are bench warmers at best.

Team practiced hard today. WR group stood out as did some DB's (wished I could give some names). DL and edge are a concern. Lets see how they scrimage vs Chargers and perform in pre-season games. Still remains to be seen if McVay will sit all his starters. some of these guys need all the practice they can get. Avila and most of edge and DB's for sure.

higbee said he had knee surgery last offseason and his knee was troubling him a little in the first half of the season. that's probably why he looked like he had concrete blocks for feet when he was running.

he's fully healthy now apparently so it should be a big season for him.

'The Greatest Show on Turf' started with Don Coryell

'The Greatest Show on Turf' started with Don Coryell

As the innovator behind the "The Greatest Show on Turf" and the head coach responsible for leading the St. Louis Rams to a win in Super Bowl XXXIV, NFL offensive guru Mike Martz had a front-row seat to the origins of that offense nearly 50 years ago.

During 12 seasons at San Diego State, former San Diego Chargers head coach Don Coryell put together an impressive 104-19-2 record, winning two Division II championships.

The Aztecs had winning streaks of 31 and 21 games, completing undefeated campaigns in 1966 and 1969 during Coryell's tenure. Coryell helped lead the Aztecs from a Division II to Division I program in 1969.

"How many times does a college team at halftime go to the opponent and say, 'Hey, listen, we're going to have a running clock in the second half,' " Martz said, " 'or this is going to get really ugly.'

"He put so much pressure on people in the passing game, and they'd never seen it before. He started that whole thing where you threw third-down passes on first down. He just attacked you relentlessly, and there was no-holds-barred.

"He had that Midas touch. Wherever he went, they just became explosive, like nothing anybody had ever seen. And it did eventually get the conservatism out of people. And they started to change. They started to embrace the passing game."

Coryell will be inducted posthumously to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio on Saturday.

A San Diego native, Martz was a slow-footed tight end at Mesa Junior College when Coryell's offenses were lighting up the scoreboard at San Diego State.

Martz loved Coryell as a coach and badly wanted to play for him. But Martz didn't fit Coryell's system. A half dozen of Martz's other teammates were recruited to play for the Aztecs while Martz went on to play at Fresno State instead.

Still, Coryell remembered him. Years later as an assistant coach at Arizona State, Martz was in his hometown on a recruiting trip and stopped by San Diego State to visit with a fellow coach.

Of course, Coryell was on the practice field working out a player, and he spotted Martz about 80 yards away.

"I thought, 'Oh my gosh, I'm in trouble now,'" Martz said. "I'm not supposed to be here and he's going to run me out of here. And he came walking over and said, 'Hell, Mike Martz. It's so good to see you, how you doing?'

"I was flabbergasted. How could he know my name? How did he know who I was? But that was Don. He never forgot anybody.

"I wanted to play for him so bad. Everybody that grew up here wanted to play for Don Coryell. That's what you wanted. I went to Fresno State, which was fine. It was a great career for me and I loved it there, but you grew up wanting to be a part of it. Because you knew they were different from what anybody had ever seen."

Coryell, who died in July 2010, finished his coaching tenure with the Chargers after a 14-year career in the NFL.

Martz paid homage to his mentor every season during his time with the Rams by bringing Coryell to St. Louis as an invited guest for a Rams preseason home game. Coryell went out for the pregame coin toss and interacted with players throughout the week, plus attended an event hosted by former St. Louis Cardinals players.

Of course, Coryell had a lot of success on his own while serving as head coach of the St. Louis Cardinals, winning division championships in 1974 and '75. Coryell's Cardinals finished 42-27-1 over five seasons.

"Everybody who played for us at the Rams understood that we do this stuff because of what this guy did," Martz said. "He created this whole system and philosophy, and we're just continuing the legacy. So when they finally got to meet him, some of the guys like Isaac [Bruce] were in awe of the guy -- and rightly so."

While Coryell had success as a head coach and is known for his innovation on offense, Martz said what goes overlooked sometimes was the relationships he developed with players, and his ability to motivate and coach.

"Talk to anybody that ever played for him," Martz said. "I don't care whether it was at San Diego State in 1968 or with the Chargers in his later years -- you just listen to anybody that was a coach or player on his team, and they talk about that coach with love and respect.

"He was just so understated and had absolutely zero ego."

My August 3 TC report

It was good to meet up with @VeteranRamFan and @bubbaramfan hopefully between the 3 of us we are able to share quite a bit of what we saw.

Some of this may be a repeat from earlier.
Trammell was out fielding punts from jugs machine well before anyone else. Tells me he knows what he needs to do to earn a roster spot. Puka, Xavier Smith and Kyren Williams joined in on fielding punts. IMO Smith and Puka looked more comfortable fielding punt and getting moving up the field.

As mentioned Tuesday the WR room is loaded with talent. In 11on11 it appeared the DBs had enough of the crowd cheering for big catches, they were breaking up passes and getting physical. The WRs and TEs were getting open on crossers but the deep passes were covered well most were broken up.

Tomlinson an K Williams looked to be the leading contenders for kickoff returns. Robinson dropped a couple.

The run game was hit and miss with a few well blocked plays giving the back about 5 yards before contact. Several runs were stuffed at LOS. Tutu took a sweep and got the corner and was gone.

Ethan Evans has a leg, he was booming punts close to 50 yards and pretty accurate eith hitting coffin corner.

It looks like the linemen on both sides have seen enough of each other. Got heated a few times. 98 Carter ended up on the ground and apparently Bruss was responsible for it and received a shot to the face mask after Carter was helped up.

McVay stopped practice and gathered the team for what I assume was a reminder of what he expects to see from them. I didn't notice any scuffle, so maybe it was just getting chirpy and he wanted to nip it before it got to heated.

Most fun marketable Rams?

Just watching Bussin with the Boys with Will Compton and Taylor Lewan do the Beer Olympics.

And they had my boy George Kittle (I'm a Hawkeye fan before a Rams fan), D Buckner, David Baktiari and a few other big celebrities.

Just fun, outgoing dudes who love to let loose and not.be a stick in the mud.

My question is, I never see many including Rams.. so who would you think on the team is the biggest partiers or fun dudes?

Or do you think they're all business?

Former Rams offensive tackle released by Vikings before preseason even begins

If Evans can’t make the Vikings training camp roster or the practice squad, it’s hard to imagine that he will get a chance with another team now

Evans has no one to blame but himself. He was given ample chances and almost got all of our QBs killed by himself. Mebbe now he can start his real career as a car wash assistant manager. Tons of car washes in Oklahoma so there's that.....
