First-round prospect CB Gareon Conley faces sexual assault allegation/Raiders take a chance on him

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...ll-be-charged-despite-passing-polygraph-test/

Gareon Conley could still be charged, despite passing polygraph test
Posted by Mike Florio on April 28, 2017

The Raiders decided to take a risk by drafting cornerback Gareon Conley. But it definitely was a risk, given the uncertainty of his legal situation in Cleveland.

Yes, Conley passed a polygraph test, which per multiple reports was imposed by the Ravens. (And that creates a separate potential can of worms that will be addressed in a separate post.) So why didn’t the Ravens pick Conley at No. 16 if, as reported, he passed it?

Whether Conley can pass a polygraph test (which remains inadmissible in a court of law because it’s not a reliable indicator of truth telling) isn’t relevant to whether he gets charged. Indeed, whether Conley is telling the truth and whether the evidence would permit a zealous prosecutor in Cleveland to indict Conley are two different issues.

Conley could still be indicted; the Ravens realize that, and the Raiders surely do, too. As the saying goes, a grand jury could indict a ham sandwich. That’s because the process entails a one-sided introduction of evidence, with the defendant having no representation. It’s also easy to indict because the legal standard for doing so is much lower than the standard required for a conviction.

To get an indictment, the prosecutor merely must convince the grand jury that probable cause exists to believe a crime was committed. Combining that with the fact that the defendant has no one arguing the opposite position makes its ridiculously easy to get an indictment.

People think that, in any community, a judge has the most power within the confines of the justice system. The truth is that the prosecutor does. The prosecutor decides who gets charged, who doesn’t get charged, and what they get charged with.

If the prosecutor in Cleveland subjectively decides that the alleged victim is telling the truth and/or that the defendant isn’t — or if the prosecutor simply decides that the prosecutor wants to turn the defendant’s life upside down for any reason at all, an indictment can be obtained.

The prosecutor’s discretion is really broad. Really, really broad. In nearly any case where a prosecutor wants to get an indictment, an indictment will be gotten.

There are two key facts that could significantly influence that decision-making process. The alleged victim has had a rape kit administered, and Conley has agreed to provide a DNA sample.

Given that Conley’s front-line defense (based on the information provided by the witnesses in the hotel room) is that nothing happened between Conley and the alleged victim, a match between the rape kit and the indictment could be the thing that prompts the prosecutor to seek an indictment, and in turn that results in the indictment being obtained.

Now that the first round is in the books I need fantasy football help

Thanks everyone for your opinions your probably right about Fournette I just hate it that hes a Jag but maybe he is good enough to overcome that. The last decent fantasy back they have had was Maurice Jones Drew back in his prime.
Not to make you feel worse about Fournette, but their head coach, Doug Marrone, also has a solid history of spreading touches to multiple backs. He's never had a Fournette though. I do think Fournette will only see 1/2 the passing down plays at best. Yeldon is adequate there and the NFL is really trending away from backs never leaving the field.

Rams should do a draft live feed

I honestly think we are heading that direction with having Everett and Farragamo in there last year with our picks. It would be nice to be the first franchise that has their own coverage and broadcast like that. IMO our franchise needs to do ground breaking things like this to start tipping the interest in their favor permantly. It certainly helps in market penetration.

Final OldSchool 2017 mock

No chance we'll go wr tomorrow with 37....

@flv

any type of bet like this?

Love the players tho ole school.

Speaking of which....we have Austin, Cooper, Thomas, and....Woods....what are we gonna do, keep 6 wideouts? Cut some TE's? Hemingway, Higbee, Harkey are under contract....add Kittles too...that's 10 receiving options. Seems like overkill.
None of those guys are proven except woods... U can put Austin in RB category imo

Chat for Draft. Come in and discuss.

This draft is so different. Not having a 1st Rd. pick i guess. This is the first time in many years that I haven't taken time off from work for the draft. I am interested .... but kinda not the same. I am only going to watch tonight just to see who wil be left for the #37 pick or maybe to see if the Rams make a move up for someone. But definitely not my usual "draft day self" lol

Welcome to Draft Day

Oh and some last minute notes...

1. Watson is going to make some teams look stupid if he slides. I think he's going to do the work and be a fine QB in this league.

2. If I were to grade Trubitsky as a person he'd get an A+. I've heard multiple interviews of this kid and every one of them makes me like him more. IMO both these QBs go in the first half of round one due to need and the fact they're both great kids.

3. If Conley--who is suffering from a BS accusation IMO based on the story--slides to us, the Rams will take him.

4. If the Rams don't take a wideout at 37 it will probably be a CB.

5. I have a feeling that Wade Phillips loves Jourdan Lewis. If so he might be in the mix for that pick, slide be damned.

Just read where Wstson said it would be a slap in the face if Trubisky went before him..I don't understand these young punk-ass college guys...He's hours sway from becoming incredibly wealthy and all he can do is spout shit like this ???I just don't get it...Of course I'm caveman age old so I guess that's why..
