I just re-watched Karty's three kickoffs from Game 1, and I'm happy to say that so far Karty is a WEAPON on kickoffs. McVay kept the strategy under wraps during preseason, so perhaps the element of surprise helped. I hope the Rams can continue to benefit from Karty's skill at his technique, but now opposing teams have video so they at least know what to expect.

For those who need a reminder of the new rule: If kickoff sails all the way into the end zone for a touchback, the receiving team gets it at the 35. However, if the ball lands in the "landing zone" (between the end line and the 20 yard line), and THEN rolls into the end zone, the receiving team has to start at their own 20.

Kickoff to open game: Karty kicks it hard and flat, soccer-style, ball lands safely in the landing zone, rolls a couple of times out of reach of Texans returners, ball rolls into the EZ for a touchback to the 20. Perfect. Camera angle was excellent so you could see Karty's perfect form.

Kickoff #2, after Rams first TD: Karty kicks off in the same way as the first time. Ball lands safely in landing zone around the 15. Since the ball LANDS in the landing zone, the Rams cover team can move as soon as the ball hits the ground. THEN the Texans returner is able to pick it up after a bounce, but the timing of the play is ruined since Karty was able to get it in the landing zone WITHOUT the ball being caught. Texans returner manages only a measly 11 yard return (to advance the ball from the 12 to the 23).

Kickoff #3: Camera angle was horrible, so it was hard to view. But this time the Rams changed up their strategy: Karty aimed to drive the ball deep and to his left, where the ball landed near the 5 yard line or so, near the corner. Ball rolls into the EZ for another touchback to the 20.

Three kickoffs. Opponent drives started at 20, 23, and 20. Considering the new rule will often reward teams with a start at the 35, that's excellent field position for the rams D.

Karty's kicking motion on kickoffs is noticeably different from his kicking motion on FGs and XP's. On kickoffs, he hits it hard and flat, and both his placement and distance are excellent-- there's a pretty small margin for error when he kicks at that angle.

Karty has mastered an entirely different kicking motion for kickoffs. So far, it's worked to perfection.

These are issues I've seen this year and the last few in general.

Fringe area play calling/scoring -

#1 When we get around the opponent's 40-35-yard line we have an issue with getting negative plays. We end up not getting points in drives we should at least get 3 in. It's been an issue. McVay needs to do some deep diving into this issue and come up with some ideas. One key focus area is not getting or taking sacks in these areas of the field.


#2 Letting teams flip the field after we pin them deep. We commonly let teams move the ball from inside their own 10 to midfield or borderline FG range. They do not always score, but we are not taking advantage of pinning them deep. We need to find a way to get an advantage in field position when we have the opportunity.

Anyone going to the game Sunday? Heading there Friday night for some tunes on Broadway. Saturday Grand Ole Opry and then back to Broadway and Sunday game at 1. Haven't bought tix yet but there are plenty available and will wait to just before game time. Will probably be in my Gabriel jersey.

Of all the targets to TEs yesterday Hibee got 0. Hard to stomach Parkinson getting more than him. He seemed to be moving fine and had no talk about him being nicked up, I can only guess he was too busy getting beat fown in the blocking scheme.

Anyone catch up yet on our NFC West foes? How did they look?

None of the offenses had a strong day.

After only one preseason game, and vs the terrible cowboys no less, I see a few conundrums. The Rams are deep. Staring roster aside, there is gonna be a logjam at nearly every position group when it comes to finalizing the 53. There is a good argument for carrying an extra FILL IN THE BLANK, but which group do you go LIGHT on?

QB: it starts here with me. Most teams who do NOT suck carry only 2 QBs on the roster. Can the Rams stash Bennet another year? He couldn’t get a shot as a #2 anywhere else? I think he could right now.

WR: we know the big 4 who are shoe-ins, but do the Rams carry 5 or 6 to keep both Xman and Mump? What does that do to our return candidates?

CBS: Witherspoon, DW, Durant, and possibly Forbes. Now what? Are the Rams carrying 5 or 6?
Safeties: same situation as CBs. How many are the Rams gonna carry? Lake, Kinchen, Curl, are probably locks. Don’t see cutting McCollough. That’s 4 right there.
The Rams are gonna be releasing guys from a he secondary who will get snapped up.

TEs: Are the Rams really gonna carry all 4 and risk losing talent at another position? I would be disappointed to see Allen relegated to the PS.

RBs: Schroeder is not gonna survive on the PS. The Rams are gonna have Corum and KW.
Can the Rams stash their rookie on the PS until someone gets hurt? Every other team passed on him more than once in the draft. What if he comes out of camp “ready”? The Rams would have to keep him on the 53.


ILBs: they have 5 and they cannot keep more than 4, maybe only 3. Who’s going to the PS?
I know the idea of Reeder starting repulses some folks, but I don’t think the formula for this group is that simple. Pooh and Dolac are rookies who will see very little time, if any, vs true starters in these preseason games.

OL: THIS is the biggest problem, IMO. After the projected starting 5, the Rams have some tough choices. Of all the position groups, some guys cut will be immediately picked up.
Just how many can the Rams carry? Easily 10. Ironically, if AJ had been healthy all along, the Rams would not have picked up 2 Tackles. I don’t want to cut the “future” of Leveston, Limmer, and Dedich; but, McClendon, and Acuri will be picked up and Lampkin has already turned heads. These cuts are gonna hurt.

So just who are you willing to part with or at least risk on the PS?

It's way too early. . . I am really only thinking week one right now, but maybe the discussion can fan out into other matchups through the season (Seattle hot dog)

But right now focusing on Houston.

I like to try to look at matchups and cities and see if certain cities have specific meal they are know for (ie Buffalo - beef on weck, as mentioned seattle dog, cincinatti chili, etc) and try new recipes.

Rams week one is verses Houston.

In my short search I saw that Houston is well known for Thai/Vietnamese food.

We are thinking I'll make a good pho broth and we'll also make some Banh Mi.

WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. – The Rams have had to adapt to different circumstances recently. From scheduling a last-minute joint practice with the Saints after the Chargers canceled, to navigating quarterback Matthew Stafford's back injury, the coaching staff has had a busy week.
After Wednesday's jog through, offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur and defensive coordinator Chris Shula spoke with local media about their approach to Thursday's joint practice, preseason standouts and more. Here are the most significant quotes and talking points from those press conferences.

"We're doing our stuff (in the joint practice on Thursday), and it's rules ball right now. We're not necessarily game planning, whether it's a preseason game or an opponent." - Shula​

While the Rams aren't concocting an opponent-specific game plan for either the Saints on Thursday or the Chargers on Saturday, the fact that those two teams played each other in the preseason already means they are watching film from the same game, but on opposite sides of the ball. "It's a challenge, but at the same time, we're not putting a ton of stock into (it)."
The Rams play the Saints in Week 9 this year, which Shula said is always in the back of their minds as they prepare for the joint practice. Still, these practices are an opportunity for players to "try some things" against competition that isn't their own team. Still, they want to perform well, giving them a "heightened level of urgency."

"(Inside linebacker Pooh Paul Jr. on Saturday) was really good, communicated good, thought he played really hard... Pooh Paul's always been a guy, just talking to a lot of his college coaches and stuff at Ole Miss, when the lights come on, he shines the brightest where he tackles, he runs, he's physical. And when you can play full tackle football with pads on, that's where he's gonna shine the brightest. So I thought he did a really nice job with the green dot, especially for missing the first couple of weeks." - Shula​

Paul made five tackles (four of defense and one on special teams), including three stops (an unsuccessful play for the offense, via PFF), against the Cowboys on Saturday. He relayed plays to the defense and took 34 snaps in what was a successful day for L.A. Shula said he liked how the entire inside linebacker unit looked in that game.

Meanwhile, fellow rookie draft pick Josaiah Stewart has done a "great" job at outside linebacker, Shula said, even picking up his first NFL sack on Saturday. After missing the first few weeks of OTA practice with a hamstring injury, Stewart has shown that "he's physical, he's tough," and Shula has liked the way he's progressed, learning from veterans in his position group.
One of those veterans is reigning Defensive Rookie of the Year Jared Verse, who Shula said has diversified his pass rush throughout the offseason program. "In OTAs, training camp, before we got pads on, we're not really bull rushing too much, so it allows him to kind of work some hands, work some edges, work a different array of moves." Expect a more versatile Verse in Year 2.

"(Offensive lineman Willie Lampkin IV is) a strong, sturdy dude... Sometimes, obviously, the attributes don't get you drafted, but it doesn't matter. You just got to land, and we like what we've seen from him. I thought he had a really good game, I thought he got better as the game went on." - LaFleur​

Lampkin earned the second-highest overall grade (94.1) and run blocking grade (92.2) among all offensive linemen (min 20% snaps played) in the first week of preseason, according to PFF. At just 5-foot-11, 290 pounds, the undrafted rookie out of North Carolina has impressed not just Rams coaches, but a variety of football fans and analysts.

My English friend stopped by my office this morning and shared something with me to pass on to our UK Brethren. It has to do with the Rams vs jags game over there this season.

In 2022 the Eagles became the 1st and only team in NFL history with 4 players having double digit sacks. Hassan Reddick (16), Javon Hargrave (11), Brandon Graham (11l, Josh Sweat (11) are the only to do it, so far. Does our quadheaded monster of Verse, Young, Turner and Fiske, who are already knocking on the door, have a chance to replicate this production this year? What would our teams' ceiling be this year if it were to happen? I am more optimistic this year than years past despite the unsettling situation with Stafford and AJ. I think this D is gonna be special this year, just a gut feeling maybe.

Just for the helluva it, let's set a new record and make it 5 when Stewart joins the mix with double digits sacks in a situational role, just like Sweat's role in '22.

Both teams seemed a little tight.

I think we all would've felt quite a bit better with a 21-9.. or even 21-16 final score. Not punching that last one is was a major bummer. Hopefully they do better with that.

It was an underwhelming day for the Rams pass rush. Not bad at all.. but not what we all were probably hoping for. Looking for more out of them moving forward.

The safeties... hmmm.... Kinchen and Curl just looked slow to me today. Let's hope it's just a blip... and, yes, I know neither are exceptional athletes.

One thing that really made me happy was the two turnovers the Rams forced. They made plays on the ball.. it was awesome. Both plays were exceptional.. Durant's pick and Landman's punch. I'm hoping for a lot more forced turnovers this season.

Xavier Smith showing up in the passing game makes me sooooooo freaking happy. He really looks like a guy who has made a significant step up this year. And he looks solid returning kicks.

Whittington looked fantastic today. Fantastic. The WR group is insane.

One of the biggest and most understandable sources of concern were both starting tackles. I'm feeling pretty good about them after that game. Anderson got big Rob once.. but those are two elite edges and they DID NOT wreak havoc.

Blake Corum is so much more explosive than Kyren. Sorry. I want to see more of him.

Davis Allen looks like he's taken a nice year-three step. At least in the passing game.

ILBs not a problem.

The defense really feels like a UNIT. It feels like it's more than just the sum of its parts.. Shula and staff are doing some cooking.

Witherspoon looks like some of the hype I've heard about him after a full offseason may be justified. He's not gonna be a shut down.. but he was moving really well.

Houston is considered a strong playoff contender and their defense is supposed to be excellent. I just think if the Rams had played a little cleaner.. this would've been an easy win.

Davante looks good.. but he and Stafford are obviously still building a rapport.

And.. finally... PUKA NACUA IS A GODDAMN SUPERSTAR!!!!! Jeez.. this guy.
