Put that dude on kick returns

Never in a million years will they put a potential HoF running backin at KR. Hell they don't even let Tavon return kicks. It'll be Benny Cunningham again once Mason and Gurley are both playing.

I'm not familiar with Washington's field. I'd like to get him at least 10 carries. He needs to take a hit or two.

I can see them using Todd as a KR early on. As he assumes starting RB duties those KR duties would go away.

I don't see it happening. He's damn good at it, but I think that would just be putting him in a bad position. I like Benny as a kick returner. Real shifty and read the blocks well.

It doesn't matter whether any of us likes it or not. NFL teams, including the Rams, have employed elite speedy RB's an WR's as KR's/PR's from the earliest years. SJ returned kickoffs early on. Henry Ellard & Isaac Bruce used to return punts. As Todd already has the college experience, he would be a natural choice. The only question is whether he has received any reps with special teams with the Horns.

If Gurley does play, I think the best way to use him would be as our starting KR. Maybe get him a few touches as a runner to warm him up and a catch or two as a receiver. But I think he'd offer us the biggest boost as a KR.

I just can't think putting him in for the most violent plays of the game (kick returns) is wise.

But, that's just me.

While he'd be great there, kick returns are also the most dangerous plays in the game. I'm not sure it'd be a good idea to put him out there as of yet, or at all. I just can't see Fisher wanting him out there.

St. Louis Post-Dispatch Rams beat writer Jim Thomas joined The Hollywood Casino Press Box with Frank Cusumano on Thursday to talk some Rams topics as they prepare to take on the Washington Redskins in Week 2 of the NFL season.

Listen to JT Talk Rams

Will Tre Mason and Todd Gurley play this week?

JT: "I believe Tre Mason is going to play. We'll see what transpires on Friday. But it looks like Tre Mason is good to go. I still think we're going to wait another week or two for Todd Gurley. It's much more likely that it would be Pittsburgh on Sept. 27 or Arizona on Oct. 4."

Cunnigham got the job done out of the backfield... Mason is a better runner, IMO.

That should suffice until Gurley is ready.

Dangerous? Yes. But I don't think they're dangerous for Gurley. I'm sure there are examples but I am having a hard time thinking of KRs that tore their ACLs on kickoff returns. You risk concussions, soft tissue injuries, ankle injuries, etc. but my biggest fear with Gurley is the knee.

Plus, I think it's worth the risk of the other injuries. He's that much of a dynamic athlete and game changer. He was a top tier KR in college and that's a good way to get him early touches without risking too much on offense.

Gurley was cleared a month ago. He's been full speed in practices. An appearance won't shock me at all.

Fair enough. I just don't want us to lose him. But if we do play him, a few touches on kickoffs (preferably only one) might not be a bad idea. Gets him up to game speed.
