Just curious...I know that Mannion hasn't played much with us so there's not a ton to go off of but what do you guys think of Mannion? What kind of floor/ceiling do you think he has?

Personally, i liked him coming out of college. I thought he was a big QB with a strong arm, accurate, and a quick release. I honestly thought he was a perfect fit for what Fisher was ***TRYING*** to do on Offense (errrr what i thought he was trying to do) and definitely think he gave us a better chance of winning games than Keenum ever did. Honestly, he still might be our best bet right now considering where Goff is RIGHT NOW (i still think Goff is a future pro bowler).

Opinions?

Smart guy with good vision but also a slow-footed, mechanical spot-thrower (struggles mightily when forced to improvise). Middling arm strength. Good touch. Elongated release.

Seems like more of a backup type to me. Nick Foles and Mike Glennon are two comparable QBs imo.

even rotoworld are in on the act.

Jared Goff - QB - Rams
Speaking after Tuesday's OTA, coach Sean McVay said "whoever we feel like gives us the best chance to win football games" is going to start at quarterback.

"Right now, we feel really good about what they've both [Jared Goff and Sean Mannion] done," McVay continued. "Jared's done a nice job of getting better, but you always want to make sure you're playing the guy that you feel like gives you the best ability to win football games. Right now, Jared is the starter." It was a tepid endorsement from McVay. It's important to remember that McVay has zero ties to Goff; he didn't use the No. 1 pick on him, and Mannion has drawn some strong reviews from coaches this offseason. In D.C., McVay was part of the staff that favored fourth-rounder Kirk Cousins over No. 2 overall pick Robert Griffin III.

Well, ... I see his floor as a full time #2/3 QB. Ceiling may rise somewhat if Goff is injured and Mannion were to come in and have a successful tour ending a season, maybe even a play-off run where his trade value shoots up and the Rams can steal another quality player or a fairly high draft pick. Either way, Mannion may never be a long term starter imo.

He'll be a decent backup and probably for many years. But he doesn't have the physical tools to be a starter.

4 yr starter. Knows defenses and how to attack them Good thrower on all levels of the field knows how to manipulate the pocket. Is a big thrower not a lot of batted balls. Shows toughness in the pocket to throw while being hit. Great awareness knows his hot reads. Throws a very catchable ball with great touch and anticipation. He can carve up zone defenses and knows how to throw the ball in tight coverage to give his guy a chance to get it. Big time leader and take charge of the huddle type of guy, big time competitor.

Slow footed on the run tends to throw off back foot when pressed off his spot. Throwing mechanics and footwork needs to improve to get more umphh behind his throws. Tends to force passes instead of taking the easy completions which led to too many turnovers.

Overall I think he can be a very effective starter in the NFL. He is already showing improvement in his footwork and his release per multiple NFL sources including his coaches. I think he has a higher floor then Ceiling but with the correct pieces around him he can be a damn good QB. He already posses the mental ability and his few shortcomings are being worked on and trimmed away.

To be honest I have never studied all of Mannion's college game film like I did with Goff so I'm not going to pretend I have a deep in depth opinion of his game/potential.

I was caught off guard when the Rams drafted Mannion in the 3rd round (No. 83). I thought it was too high at the time but after reading about him I realized it was his Junior season that pushed him up the draft for some teams and the fact that he ran a pro scheme offense.

Clearly his best year was 2013 because his O-Line was far superior to what he had in 2014 and his best WR Brandon Cooks was on that 2013 Oregon St roster.

Anyway I watched a few of his games from the 2013 season and I was impressed and thought he showed some potential to be a quality backup or a possible starter if he was surrounded by a strong supporting cast. I know that can be said about half the quarterbacks drafted...

He did show some talent in his 2013 film and if Mannion had declared for the draft after his Junior season and was drafted by the Rams in the 3rd round, I wouldn't have been caught off guard or thought of him as a bit of a reach like I did.

Draft Bio (I read that some scouts liked him more than this draft bio so don't be offended @Dxmissile ;)

ANALYSIS

Four-year starter who owns 18 passing records at Oregon State. Tall quarterback who sees over the offensive line. Throws with high release point. Plays with desired footwork. Can sit down and shift weight properly to drive the intermediate throws. Played in pro-style offense and is comfortable with 3-, 5- and 7-step drops from under center.

When protected, shows confidence to stand and deliver with accuracy to all areas of the field. Trusted by head coach Mike Riley to make pre-snap reads and audible. Played in multiple-read offense and shows patience in allowing routes to develop. Good feel for pro-style play-action passing attack and can throw with above-average accuracy and ball placement.

WEAKNESSES
Tempo of his play is a concern. Slow in takeaway from center and set-up and slow getting through progressions. Carries ball low in the pocket, allowing defenders to swipe at it. Finished career with 30 fumbles and 54 interceptions. Poise and mobility in pocket are below average.

Not considered a play-extender outside of pocket. Drops eyes and misses throwing windows when he senses pressure around him. Decision making greatly influenced by level of pressure around him. Fails to throw with adequate zip when feet aren't under him and he doesn't step strongly into throw. Takes too long to get rid of throws on out routes.

DRAFT PROJECTION

Round 5 or 6

"His stats and tape weren't as good this year as last year, but he flashes NFL potential in every game you watch. I thought he did the same thing at the Senior Bowl practices." -- NFC area scout

NFL COMPARISON

BOTTOM LINE

Tall, rhythm thrower who shows an ability to play with confidence and accuracy when used as a game manager within an offense featuring a strong rushing attack. Mannion needs plays to stay on schedule or his confidence becomes shaky and the turnovers start rolling in. Mannion lacks arm talent to carry an offense, but has enough ability to become a capable backup.

Not enough pro play to have an opinion of Mannion or Goff at this point. What we saw of both I would say Goff certainly has more arm talent.
If Mannion can be a guy who can stay healthy, be a team first guy and be a guy a coach could trust for spot start duties.....3 or 4 game stretches he could be in the league for a long long time and make tens of millions.
A solid back up NFL QB....best gig in sports.
For he whom not much is expected much shall be paid.

From all the posts above it seems like he is a decent low cost backup for now. I imagine he has improved some of his weaknesses with NFL coaching. He get some playing time in preseason so we can see if he has.

and a quick release.
I have nothing against Mannion. He may turn out to be a good QB one day.
And there's nothing wrong with wanting to get some opinions on the guy,
but Mannion's release has never been quick. In fact it's quite the opposite.
His release was one of the problem areas that he needed to address.

I like what MANnion has to offer tbh. He was good vision, knows how to read a defense, and has great arm strength. Of course he has areas he has to work on but so does our young Goff. I feel if I wanted to win one game at the beginning of the season the better QB might be MANnion. Curious to see this offseason with the two.

I hope that Mannion keeps improving, so that he becomes a legitimate trade bait option in a year or two.

I think for Mannion to be starter any team would have to tailor their offense to fit his limitations. They would have to bump up the protection to cover his lack of movement skills. Run more to get the dbs pressing and try to create more separation for his receivers. That throwing motion is slow and long. He would have a lot of passes defense and ints.
