Players, coaches and fans have been bitching about shoddy NFL officiating for yeas. You'd think they would try to copy MLB. They have full time umpires that go through extensive training and in practice rarely get it wrong. They are the best at what they do in all of major league sport. But no, the NFL owners are too greedy and trying to save a buck. All this could be avoided if they would invest in full time officials and training them up to a higher level. It's so bad is gotten to appoint where its areal distraction and making wins and losses questionable. Having part time teachers and garbage collectors deciding multi-million dollar outcomes is ludicrous.

Get your shyt together and fix it Goodell. Fans are getting ready to turn off the TV on Sunday if you can't get it right.
Well it is also the easiest to ref. Most plays are in predictable spots. They can position themselves in the best position to see the play when it comes to them. They dont have to look thru players to see penalties. They dont have to run and make calls and most calls are black and white. Its apples to oranges.

mostly agree, but would argue that the behind the plate umpire is one of, if not the toughest, officiating jobs in all of sports, simply because of how much of an impact they have on the game

Starts at the 1:00 mark... This is truly unbelievable. We have a government shutdown and this clown brings this up. The Senate Speaker should have shut him down immediately. Worry about all those government employees who need to go back to work. This is only making the State of LA, the Saints organization, and their fans look completely foolish.

Notice that the room is empty except for two staffers who have to sit there and act interested. It's my understanding that a lot of these speeches are made during times when the house and senate are in recess, and this is not a committee hearing or meeting of any kind. He is just being filmed in an empty room.

Still, they just stand in one place, with nothing in the way and look in one place, with no distraction to take away your focus. Just need confidence to do it. NFL refs even though they each have there own responsibility, there are many things to look at at one time. Referee for instance has the responsibility of holding at the line of scrimmage and safety of the QB. How many things can he see at one time and if he is looking at one thing another could be missed. Or he only sees the tail end of an infraction. Does it look as bad at the end as it did in the beginning. That's why lineman hold for a couple of seconds and let go.
The fact is NFL refs have an almost impossible job when you factor in all the extra judgement and decision making they are required to do in split seconds.
