I think he will need one more season to prove it wasn't a fluke year. But, you never know.

It takes more than one successful rookie season with an uber-talented roster to make a good HC. I think Robert Saleh is far above Staley on the HC prospects list. I would be surprised if Saleh doesn't get a HC offer next year. That said a whole lot of DCs transitioned to HC but with mixed results i.e. Phillips and Rivera come to mind. Also, teams will look at the recent coaches poached off of McVay's staff and see Matt LaFleur as successful in GB but Zac Taylor on the hot seat with the Bengals.

The better run franchises will want to see more from Staley IMO. Also, Staley will look at Taylor and LaFleur and see where he goes will have long term effects on his career. If he's as smart as McVay says then Staley will wait for the best circumstance he can when he makes the jump. He's only 39 he's got plenty of time to strengthen his resume and find the right situation and right now he's in the best place he can be to build a resume.

Make Staley HC and demote McVay to OC. Problem solved.
You might be on to something here.

McVay "retires" and Staley promoted to HC. After all the HC jobs are filled, McVay comes out of retirement as assistant HC/OC

McVay is the reason players want to be here. His team culture is as valuable to the Rams as his coaching. You don't mess with that. Players like Ramsey, AD, Floyd, Hollins, Woods, Kupp and others are elated to be part of this team and don't want to be anywhere else. Like Ramsey said that he wants to finish his career in LA. Robinson is just the latest example of a player willing to be flexible in his contract just to be here. This team now has a culture of winning. Just look at places like the Cards and Bengals. Snead doesn't really have to bribe players to come to LA. They want to come to LA.

No Dudes, you don't mess with success.

Only if you hobble them...

Grabs a walking boot from the training room before asking Staley to head down...

Staley would be dangerous with those pieces on D and Herbert to develop at QB.

I hope Staley stays put after Kroenke gives him a big raise. Of course he may get offers to be a head coach, but it would not be irrational for him to want to run the table some more with the Rams before taking on a very different new role, a likely challenging situation, and more changes for himself and his family.

Staley is a cancer survivor who knows what's important in life. He strikes me as a serious, quiet guy who is very much into his own thought and analysis. He can see what McVay has to go through to be THE guy. It takes a certain kind of personality to be ready to take on such a totally front and center public role. And if it doesn't work out, it's a big setback.

Let's hope that Staley may choose to move up a little later when he feels the timing and situation are right for him.

I have a feeling that of all the teams that Staley will go for the Chargers

And no it’s not the same type of feeling that I had in the SF game :D

I dunno, offense is more important than ever. The announcers last night were talking about how the bills sacrificed resigning some guys on defense to improve their offense.
i think Saleh is for sure on a lot of lists, he’s got a resume that includes a SB appearance, this is Staley’s first time in the big chair. Unless he gets a SB he might have to wait a year.

Anything can happen but I do not think he will get a HC job this year. Only one season as a DC only four seasons in NFL. No HC experience in college. Also, does he have enough connections to build a desirable coaching staff?

And it seems like he genuinely likes working with McVay. After the game you saw McVay hugging it out with him and walking to the locker room with his arm around Staley.

I don't know Staley personally but I think you're right on with his personality. He is almost a polar opposite to McVay and I don't mean that in a bad way. McVay has that head coach-type personality about him, a leader of men and a quick talker. Maybe Staley likes where he's at and doesn't need/want the pressure of head coaching duties? We won't know until the season is over and we start hearing about head coaching interviews happening.

Hopefully we can lock him up for a few years and see what this defense looks like then. It's already incredibly good and that isn't something I thought I would be saying at the beginning of the season.

You’re not suggesting that a guy might turn down a shot at a HC gig are you, cuz that might be a first.
Most type A’s think they personally are a bit smarter than the next guy and they want to be the guy in charge, there are plenty of guys who were better as coordinator though, several are probably going to get fired like Patricia this year. It’s the best way to get a gig.

You have to apply before you turn it down. No doubt Staley will be a HC if that's what he wants now and he goes for it. Just suggesting that he could have a view of his world which doesn't demand being a head coach immediately.

Staley is, by far, the smartest guy in the room but not sure he's a classic Type A. We'll see what he does.

What tells me that Staley absolutely has it in him to be a head coach?

The story that came out during the bye week that he pulled up tape from training camp to show the defensive players how much they had grown in the defense.

I really hope we don't lose him after this one season.

There have been several DCs and ST coaches who could have become HCs and decided against it. I can't for the life of me recall, but I think the ST coach for Reid in KC is one and I think Fritz Shurmur could qualify as that insofar as he was a DC for 19 years and I know he had offers at various points, but preferred to stay a DC.

Also, Brandon Staley isn't a Type A personality...at least not from how he's portrayed by his players and in interviews.

I could see him staying or going, but it wouldn't shock me if he stayed.
